Please help us test: Fedora Media Writer 5.0

Hi there. We just learned that there's an opportunity to have a brand new
Fedora Media Writer 5.0 (with a completely redone UI, but using the same
background code) together with the Fedora 36 release. The timing is tight,
but we agreed that we'd like to give it a try.

We'd like to gather test feedback today and tomorrow, so that we can decide
whether it's a good idea to make it public next week on Tuesday for F36 GA
(assuming we're GO today). If it doesn't work well, we'll ask Jan Grulich,
the developer, to keep to the old FMW 4.2 for now.

Can you please help us test FMW 5.0 on all possible platforms and system
configurations as possible, and report here?

feeding it the ISO manually:

(of course the Setup phase doesn't apply, use the links above instead)

Please tell us which version you tested (rpm/flatpak/windows/mac), on which
OS, with which hardware (especially the GPU could be relevant for rendering
the UI, and if you used closed/open drivers in case of Nvidia), and how it

Tested on Fedora 36 Kinoite - Flatpak downloaded from

* After installation of the flatpak, doing a `flatpak list` shows that the app is version
4.2.0. But I'm assuming that it's the 5.0 version since the UI is different than
what I'm used to.

* The Write Options Screen has the UI overflow below the bottom of the window and the
window cannot be scrolled or resized to view it. (https://pasteboard.co/qBWgpml9QpJf.png)

* The Downloads Screen has an icon mid/center, but it is very small and can't see what
it is. (https://pasteboard.co/eAOAcGJsOmKm.png)

* Canceling a download. Dialog box is cut off, and cannot scroll down/resize window to
confirm cancel. (https://pasteboard.co/uGXAtOM7dhsZ.png)

* Restore Screen. Same window size issue. (https://pasteboard.co/xMGItvM5ci04.png)

* Deleting media after write. I couldn't see whether the option for Delete download
after writing was checked due to window layout (https://pasteboard.co/cYDUEmEr89ED.png).
Nevertheless, on the Writing media screen, the text "This will delete installation
media from your drive" appears (https://pasteboard.co/ZJnHjfBj1Yvj.png). If the
Delete Download button was not active, this message shouldn't appear. If the Delete
Download was active, and I couldn't see it, the actual behavior is wrong because the
media was *not* deleted from my drive after the write completed.


* Confirmed working: Write USB using Download Automatically method (Fedora Silverblue
36).

* Confirmed working: Restored USB drive to full size in FAT32 format.

* Confirmed working: Write USB using Select .iso file method
(Fedora-LXQt-Live-x86_64-35-1.2.iso).

* Confirmed working: Booted from USB drive (LXQt Spin) attached to KVM virtual machine in
BIOS mode and second install in UEFI mode. Installation completed successfully and booted.

This all will be most likely a common issue, but I'm unable to see the screenshots and

Hi Yosuke, thanks for a great feedback! All those images give me HTTP 502.
Perhaps the site is down just temporarily. If it is not, and you still have
the screenshots available, could you upload them elsewhere? Or,
alternatively, report those issues individually at

I tested the RPM and the Flatpak on Fedora Workstation 36 on an Intel
GPU. I flashed Fedora Kinoite 36 Beta to a USB stick using it
successfully.

With both the RPM and the Flatpak, I noticed that it doesn't follow
the light/dark preference from GNOME, but that's probably
QGnomePlatform there.

With the RPM, the panels don't seem to have any imagery? The picture
of the main window in the readme has a graphic that doesn't show up on
my installed version. No graphic on the downloading and writing panels
either. At the end when it's finished, the main window still says writing to
disk, even though the notification was pushed that it finished, so it
didn't switch to the "finished" window pane. Closing it in this
scenario seems harmless, but confusing. Otherwise, it seems to work fine.

When testing the Flatpak, it seems to work the same, except the
imagery shows up and the finished writing panel shows up. The Flatpak
downloads ISOs much more slowly than the RPM (like several orders
slower!).

Are the RPM and the Flatpak built from the same commit? If so, there
might be a packaging bug in the RPM one.

Missing runtime dependency on qt6-qtsvg. I will fix that. Not sure about the 
wrong state, I will try to reproduce.

This is weird, I'm now testing both and have same results. As the code for
download hasn't change since the old FMW version I don't think this is a 
new issue in FMW 5.0.0.

Generally seems to be working as expected. But here are some notes after testing X86_64
RPM version on F36 Beta KDE spin:
  - qt6-qtsvg was missing as reported already, so first screenshots didn't have any
graphics
  - Restore flash drive shows a failure, seems like the partition is destroyed, but new
one fails to be created (screenshot in a folder)
    - Upon re-plug restore option does not appear
  - Note: Downloading beta, downloads 1.4 image, not 1.5 (as of 9:15 06.05.2022)

Downloaded and locally stored images written correctly, so no issues there.

Can you try to restore it with some partition manager and try again (to write and
restore)? And if it fails again, can you try in the old FMW. after restoring in some other
partition manager and making a new write? We didn't really touch the code responsible
for restoration so I would expect it to behave the same as with old FMW.

That's correct, F36 Beta had 1.4 version in the filename. The Final RCs
will not show up there until the official announcement next week. But you
can hack it manually using the guide linked in the original email in this
thread.

well, except perhaps one minor issue:

Also, there is no way to download and create a Netinst image. I understand

regression compared to FMW 4.2 and a current showstopper, I believe.

Tested on a HP Omen with Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 1650 running windows 11. All
looks good. I am able to download the workstation, write it and boot with
live iso. If the write is interrupted due to flash drive eject. It
automatically re-writes.
The flash drive cleanup works fine and as expected.

uncovered (and Jan fixed) lots of issues. FMW 5.0 should be available
officially today together with Fedora 36 (if stars align, otherwise a few
days later). Testing the latest builds (from the project page or from
updates-testing) is of course still very useful. If you find any more
