Today's GNOME pathologies

[Jonathan Corbet]

So I just updated my Rawhide system.  Items noticed in the first few
minutes:

 - Blinking cursors are on everything and cannot be turned off.  I *hate*
   blinking cursors.  They make me Grumpy.

 - Lots of icons are missing.  The "system settings" dialog is now mostly
   text.

 - Setting the background no longer works; it is pure black.

Obviously something has gone a little funky somewhere; or is it only me?

I didn't notice anything on branched this morning. But I just had the screen
locked and for things like this, you sometimes need to logout to restart
things before seeing a change.

You should be able to disable that with gconf-editor/gsettings 
/desktop/gnome/interface/cursor_blink if we follow the common 
workarounds for new nuances ;)

I had seen those issue while back with an added black screen in All but 
that was fixed ( for me atleast ).

I did try an nightly desktop build from the 26 ( liveusb) on an friends 
laptop hp pavilion dv6000 and graphics was all broken only background in 
gdm and just complete scrambleness without black background when started 
when run startx.

Nouvea was complaining something about some vt error if I recall correctly.
( did not spend time debugging it since it was a failed Fedora/Gnome3 
introduction )

Nope, that shows it already disabled (as does the "keyboard" settings
dialog).  It's just that the applications don't seem to be paying
attention anymore...

I tested this and am unable to duplicate on a fully updated F15 ( 
branched )

I went to system settings --> keyboard and turned off cursor blinking (  
the gconf setting appears to be deprecated since it already was disabled 
for me ) and it no longer blinks in Gnome-terminal and Gedit

If you are running rawhide ( what now will become F16 ) expect things to 
be broken for some time since maintainers wont necessary build/update 
components for F16 since all the focus is on branched at the moment ( F15 ).

Note it's not uncommon for reporters to accidently continue to stay on 
the rawhide train instead of disabling rawhide and enable 
updates-testing when it get's branched.

If you need a usable system I recommend that you stay away from the 
rawhide train until it hits alpha which is sometime late August if 
memory serves me correct.

FWIW, I've been running Rawhide for many years - I'm well aware of what
I'm getting into.  Are you saying I shouldn't report Rawhide problems?

I think you should report problems in rawhide.

Hum not sure how you got that from my reply he general rule of thumb is 
always report since things that dont get reported dont get fixed. ;)

You could compare what you got installed with what's in branched and 
rebuild newer srpms if they exist in branched to see if that fixes 
things for you then file a bug and request an rawhide build.

Things really shouldn't be broken for that reason. People shouldn't be doing
updated builds for F15 without doing corresponding builds for rawhide.

Aggreed it should not happen but unfortunetly it is not so..

For example..

Latest version of systemd in branched is 20-1 [1] but in rawhide 18-1 
[2]  without it being a failed build so something is amiss...

I also lost some icons and my background on rawhide, plus got errors
about glib schemas (which actualy make me grumpy too). 

Last update even broke dependencies around nm and libnm, getting yum
complaining about instant messaging, from empathy to gnome-shell, which
requires telepathy-logger.

Since mutter won't start either, I'm still mining for interesting data
to report.

Not only you.

My ongoing rawhide guest shows these symptoms.
A new rawhide guest (f15 -< rawhide via yum) does not.

problems around libtelepathy-logger.
