Proposal: New Fedora Localization Guide

Today I spent a few hours and created a new and updated version of the Fedora L10n Guide: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/Guide What's new? - Re-used a lot of content from the excellent TQSG we had in Docs. - The content was updated to reflect our new infrastructure. A huge chunk of warnings and questions has gone away, since the new Tx arch handles things transparently, eliminating msgmerge errors, POT files missing etc. - The FAQ page was also updated & merged at the bottom of the guide, to make sure we keep it up2date. - The guide was put on the Wiki instead of publican. This will allow us to maintain it live, with more people, more content & translations. - I suggest to completely remove the docs-based TQSG and focus on having only one guide. This will avoid confusion and the content will always be updated. Finally, we've been documenting a lot of things on the Transifex Help Pages, which are integrated into the tool itself. IMPORTANT - Fedora Project Contributor Agreement Signing Window Is Open

Please take a moment and read this brief email, as it is important. Fedora is in the process of retiring our old "Individual Contributor License Agreement" (also known as the ICLA or CLA) and replacing it with the new Fedora Project Contributor Agreement (FPCA). All Fedora contributors with accounts in the Fedora Account System (https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts) who have agreed to the old CLA *MUST* agree to the new FPCA by June 17, 2011 to continue contributing to Fedora. Here is how you do this: 1) Login to the Fedora Account System: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts 2) Once logged in, click on the "My Account" link in the blue box on the left side of the window. 3) On the page that loads, you will see a section labeled "Account Details". Look for the line that says "Contributor Agreement". On that line, you should see a new section that says: "New CLA Not Signed - We need contributors to sign the new Contributor Agreement(Complete it now!)" Click on "Complete it now!" and follow the prompts. ***** It is important that Fedora Account holders who have signed the old Fedora CLA sign the new FPCA. We have allotted a window of one month for Fedora contributors to agree to the FPCA. This means that after June 17, 2011, any Fedora Contributors who have not agreed to the FPCA will have their "cla_done" flag set to False. This also means that any groups that they are in which are dependent upon "cla_done", such as "packager", "ambassador", and Fedora People access will be removed. There are a few accounts which are exempt from this, specifically, accounts which are members of the "cla_dell", "cla_intel", and "cla_redhat" groups. If you do not know what these groups are, you are probably not in them. :) Accounts in these groups will not see the "New CLA Not Signed" line on their "My Account" page, and do not need to take any action at this time. Please take a minute and login to FAS to agree to the terms of the FPCA, to avoid loss of access. Removing duplicate teams

A few months ago, some of the Fedora teams were duplicated to support Publican's language format (eg. nl and nl-NL). This support has been available in the Transifex Client for many weeks now, and Publican projects can simply configure their Tx client to easily map the Fedora Team languages to their dash format (ie. convert nl → nl-NL) without requiring to have a duplicated team. This configuration is stored in the ``.tx/config`` file, so it's going to be available for all users of the git repos. http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/docs/2011-May/013337.html http://help.transifex.net/user-guide/client/devel.html#customizing-the-lang… We will proceed in removing all the duplicated teams soon and only keep the ones the L10n team uses. For example, remove nl_NL and only keep nl (merge the first members into the latter and remove team). The following languages will be RENAMED (two-letter teams do not exist): - zh_CN → zh - lt_LT → lt - es_ES → es - vi_VN → vi The following teams will be REMOVED (two-letter teams already exist): - cz_CZ - it_IT - jp_JP - lv_LV - fa_IR - ta_IN - uk_UA The Docs Project owners can follow something like the following: 1. tx pull --translations (remote nl_NL → local nl_NL) 2. <edit .tx/config file to add mappings> 3. tx push --translations (local nl_NL → remote nl) 4. # tx pull --translations #remote nl → local nl-NL) Step #1 can only happen before we remove/rename the teams. Transifex vs. offline tools

Hi! There is a strange sentence in new "Fedora Localization Guide" But definitely try the web-editor first, since it has many features not available when translating offline. Can somebody guide me to the page with the list of the features "not available when translating offline"? If there is no such page, can this misleading statement be removed? Single-module fedoraproject.org

Hi. >From what has become a bottleneck for the Russian L10N team last cycle, the fedoraproject.org master branch contains one large module of 1077 strings that has been quite uneasy to collaborate on. Besides that it's a large amount of work for one person at a time, one locks the module to work on it exclusively while others wait. Can the unit be broken into separate smaller POTs so at least 3 people could work on it at the same time? Translated strings not loaded in some dialogues promted for password

Here is information for translators. There are several programs which prompt user to enter password, for example: PackageKit and system-config-firewall. In Chinese (Traditional) environment, the strings of authentication dialogue are all in English, while they should be all translated. For exmaple: "Authentication is required to install a signed package" in PackagKit, and "Authentication is required to read and modify firewall settings" I go to /usr/share/locale/zh_TW/LC_MESSAGES and use msgunfmt XXX.mo > XXX.po to check if the translations are packed or not, and all of them are translated indeed! A temporary solution for translator credits in po file

Hi guys, We've made great efforts for the localization of Fedora 15. As we already knew, translator information will not be added in the head of po file since we migrated l10n work to transifex.net. Then I created a wiki page[1] to log translators credits of zh_CN team. I am not sure whether this is the best way to keep translator information, but I think this can be a temporary solution.
