Proposal: New Fedora Localization Guide

Today I spent a few hours and created a new and updated version of the Fedora L10n Guide: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N/Guide What's new? - Re-used a lot of content from the excellent TQSG we had in Docs. - The content was updated to reflect our new infrastructure. A huge chunk of warnings and questions has gone away, since the new Tx arch handles things transparently, eliminating msgmerge errors, POT files missing etc. - The FAQ page was also updated & merged at the bottom of the guide, to make sure we keep it up2date. - The guide was put on the Wiki instead of publican. This will allow us to maintain it live, with more people, more content & translations. - I suggest to completely remove the docs-based TQSG and focus on having only one guide. This will avoid confusion and the content will always be updated. Finally, we've been documenting a lot of things on the Transifex Help Pages, which are integrated into the tool itself. Tx duplicate teams removal

Hi! The docs translation period starts in two months, it would be nice for the l10n teams with duplicate language resources on Transifex to have their resources justified. >From what requires action, the duplicate resources named as regional codes (like ru_RU or es_ES) hold our previous work. While the resources named as language identifiers (like ru or es) are out of sync or contain empty translations. It means that the project translators would lose progress if the project maintainers kill the duplicates now. The progressed modules need to be merged in the right place, where these would be available to the teams members afterwards. This is to be done by the l10n coordinators. There's also a deadline to be set so we don't make the cleanup an endless process. August 15th, 2011, seems to be enough, in case someone's on vacation. That's 2 weeks before the docs translation period starts and about 1.5 month from now. Then we may ask the project maintainers to run a script to remove all those language resources. If the Transifex stats [2] don't lie, the following teams are to be REMOVED: as_IN bg_BG bn_IN bs_BA ca_ES cz_CZ da_DK de_DE el_GR fa_IR fi_FI fr_FR gu_IN he_IL hi_IN hr_HR hu_HU id_ID is_IS it_IT jp_JP kn_IN ko_KR lt_LT lv_LV ml_IN ms_MY nb_NO nl_NL or_IN pa_IN pl_PL ru_RU sr_RS sr_RS@latin sk_SK sv_SE ta_IN te_IN uk_UA vi_VN The following team is to be LEFT INTACT: zh_CN (as opposed to zh_TW and zh_HK) The merging task can be accomplished by using the Transifex-client tool available in Fedora repository. You will need the language remapping capability introduced in version 0.5.2, which is currently in the testing repo. To use now, run: su -c "yum install transifex-client --enablerepo=*testing" or update using the testing repo: su -c "yum update transifex-client --enablerepo=*testing" Please give the package transifex-client-0.5.2-1.fc15.noarch [1] good karma so it would land in the stable repo soon. The procedure has been summarized before [3], there's also a complete manual to the tool [4]. It took me less time because I only downloaded one language I wanted. For instance, to update the Virtualization Guide I did: 1. configure the tool to use the chosen resource: a. create a folder, say, "transifex" in the home dir and cd into it b. [misha@pc transifex] $ tx init c. [misha@pc transifex] $ tx set --auto-remote https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/fedora-virtualization-guide/ 2. pull the "ru_RU" translation modules: a. IMPORTANT - Fedora Project Contributor Agreement Signing Window Is Open

Please take a moment and read this brief email, as it is important. Fedora is in the process of retiring our old "Individual Contributor License Agreement" (also known as the ICLA or CLA) and replacing it with the new Fedora Project Contributor Agreement (FPCA). All Fedora contributors with accounts in the Fedora Account System (https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts) who have agreed to the old CLA *MUST* agree to the new FPCA by June 17, 2011 to continue contributing to Fedora. Here is how you do this: 1) Login to the Fedora Account System: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts 2) Once logged in, click on the "My Account" link in the blue box on the left side of the window. 3) On the page that loads, you will see a section labeled "Account Details". Look for the line that says "Contributor Agreement". On that line, you should see a new section that says: "New CLA Not Signed - We need contributors to sign the new Contributor Agreement(Complete it now!)" Click on "Complete it now!" and follow the prompts. ***** It is important that Fedora Account holders who have signed the old Fedora CLA sign the new FPCA. We have allotted a window of one month for Fedora contributors to agree to the FPCA. This means that after June 17, 2011, any Fedora Contributors who have not agreed to the FPCA will have their "cla_done" flag set to False. This also means that any groups that they are in which are dependent upon "cla_done", such as "packager", "ambassador", and Fedora People access will be removed. There are a few accounts which are exempt from this, specifically, accounts which are members of the "cla_dell", "cla_intel", and "cla_redhat" groups. If you do not know what these groups are, you are probably not in them. :) Accounts in these groups will not see the "New CLA Not Signed" line on their "My Account" page, and do not need to take any action at this time. Issues in Persian fedoraproject.org PO file

Hi, the website build is currently failing because of trailing new lines in the Persian PO file: msgfmt -o po/fa.mo po/fa.po po/fa.po:4236: `msgid' and `msgstr' entries do not both end with '\n' msgfmt: found 1 fatal error make: *** [po/fa.mo] Error 1 The PO seems to be locked in transifex at the moment, so I don't want to step on anybody's toes - could the translator working on this (tuxitop) please fix the strings? Coordinators who have not signed FPCA

Greetings, we're getting ready to remove from fedora.transifex.net the people who have not yet signed the FPCA in transifex. Unfortunately, this includes 27 language team coordinators; many of which are the sole coordinator for their team. If we were to remove them we would also have to remove the translation team as every team needs a coordinator. At present we would lose the following languages: el, ro, de_CH, hi, as, ta_IN, zh_CN, bn_BD, si, fa, he, ast, sl, mai, lt_LT, vi_VN, nn, lv, sk, hne We've decided to delay removing people one week to try to get some more coordinators to sign the FPCA in transifex so that we don't lose the teams. Here's some options for what you can do to help with this: 1) I'll attach the list of coordinators[2]_ who haven't signed to this message. If you have an alternate method of contacting them, let them know that they need to sign the FPCA in transifex[1]_ 2) Get other people to become the coordinators for those teams. For instance, the Greek translation team has three members who have signed the FPCA. If one of them took over as coordinator, then the team would not be in danger. 3) Since we can't keep extending the deadline, we would like the Fedora Translation Team's blessing to promote a random member of specific language teams who has signed the FPCA to be the coordinator for their language if there's no coordinator who has signed. This will keep us from losing language teams that have people eligible to continue submitting translations but is not ideal as we'd be granting extra powers and responsibilities to these people without explicit consent.
