Context in Technical Translation : Concept and Guidelines

Hi

We, under FUEL Project [1], have prepared a guide that tries to tell in
briefly about the context and its importance in the field of technical
translation. Context as an concept is a very controversial subject in
various discipline. Here we have tried to understand the concept of context
in the field of technical translation and in particular related to the FOSS
area. Hope this guide will be helpful for translator as well as developer.

Developers to help them understand the importance of context, and start to
add this information to the software?
Translators, in order for them to pay attention to this context information
that may otherwise be overlooked?

Do we have stats about the proportion of strings to translate that actually
use this context information?

And wouldn't it be interesting to have this document as a wiki page rather
than a possibly outdated odt/pdf document circulating from mailbox to
mailbox?

Thanks!

All the persons related to the localizations directly or indirectly are the
target audience.  But the first responsibility of putting context
information lies with the developer who owns and create an application. If
s/he wants application to be localized s/he should carefully write the
context information. I remember that even the application like 'anaconda'
has no context information for any strings. So this creates a lot of
problem for translators and particularly the new translators. Anaconda is
just an example...context is although critically important but generally
ignored by developers as well as translators.

It would be good to know the proportion of the strings ie stats for strings
with context. I will check with some of the applications where context is
given importance and will write about the same.

pdf/odt: We, of FUEL project members, know the limitations. Actually we are
in the process of starting a docs section in our website and we will use
publican publishing tool for the same. Hope this will be better and more
useful.

I had a similar idea but instead of making it so theoretical I though about
making it facebook like.

It should be something like this:
A collaborative image tool allowing people to upload screenshots of the
software, then the translators can go look at the picture and "tag" the
different strings to a certain line in the PO and maybe even comment it.

This way we can use the community instead of creating more work for the
devs and connect better as a community.

How does that sound?

Please try this one...would be a better way instead people individually
uploading screenshot.

But there should essentially be context info and comments in the file that
is going to be translated even if we have the above type of application to
show the context in visual manner.

As useful deckard might seems, currently it is limited to running
Glade applications as an "web application".

The GSoC period is an useful way to experiment whether such an
application can be devised. The chances of failure may be high, but
the benefits of success are always stupendous. Have you considered
proposing this as a project with yourself as a mentor?

GSoC can help here. Myself as a mentor? As far as the flow chart and
general perspective from a localizer point of view is concerned, I can help
and guide, but I cannot help anything related to the actual coding or
similar work :-)

Why do we always have to ask devs only?

Why can't we have another group of people (Say Fedora SIG for doing
Contextualization of Fedora applications) taking care of this?

Fedora needs work much from the context point...as I already wrote earlier
that even Anaconda is not having a single line of context in whole files
given to translators. See how important Anaconda is and how it can effect
badly, we can understand.

Ankit, SIG is good...but it will be always good if the developer also works
with SIG and guides the SIG in writing the contextual information.

Rajesh, absolutely. Why do we have a testing team? why do we have an
i18n team?

Even though developers are supposed to make sure every package they
develop are i18n ready and tested well, still we have a team. Why?
certainly because there are things that might left untouched
unknowingly. For filling up that gap only, we should also have a group
taking care of contextualization w.r.t. software translations. And the
guide you have shared across would be of great help in that aspect.
