Fedora Installation vs Red Hat 9

Will the anaconda install be updated/modified to work more like the Red Hat 9 install is with future releases of Fedora? Will you be able to select/deselect individual packages during install? Will you be able to choose Text or GUI boot up at startup?

Drivers and vendor support?

One of the big reasons I stuck with RedHat was that it enjoyed what I saw as the largest amount of vendor support for a linux distro. nvidia had binary drivers, program authors often had RH specific rpms, etc. Will RH and FC work to migrate that to FC? Has anybody called nvidia and said "well, we're splitting RH into RHEL and Fedora Core, will you put out drivers for both?" or something? After reading here from RH employees that *RH* isn't abandonging Fedora, I just was wondering whether *vendors* would be doing so... Thanks! Ben

Since YaST is the installer for SuSE, you end up with something you can not freely load on other machines. I -MAY- be wrong, but I think that is the whole reason behind not having downloadable SuSE ISO's, and why on the few occasions you DO find SuSE ISO's on a public FTP server, they are pulled quickly. That's part of the reason I am here. I am looking for a desktop distribution that is freely distributable, easy to install, and that will have good user guides. I would hope with a community project, you do not pay for up2date - but use a similar tool - although I'm often wrong. I feel that with the backing of RH, Fedora will meet all those requirements. Since I'm downloading Severn ISO's right now, take my above comments as a rank amatuer newbie.

dev fs LABEL=/

I tried to compile a custom 2.4.22 kernel - when I boot it I get a VFS kernel panic error saying it cannot open root device LABEL=/ or 00:00. I'm looking through xconfig to see if I don't have devfs setup. I used the .config included with fedora core kernel source. It doesn't surprise me that the .config isn't accurate - I couldn't get the fedora core source to compile acpi, so i think it's not an accurate source tree. RHN total size of out of date packages?

Hi folks, Can anyone point me to a sensible way to find out the total size of the updates applicable to my system? I have installed Fedora Core Test 2, registered with RHN, subscribed to the updates channel, and found all of the relevant packages (138 in all), but i'd really like to know how big they are before i download and apply them... -- Paul http://paulgear.webhop.net A: Because we read from top to bottom, left to right. Fedora on UML

Has anyone attempted to get Fedora running on UML? I know that there is a 7.2 root filesystem out there and wonder if I'd be able to use it to upgrade to Fedora? If I'm wrong, I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts. I think UML would be a great way to check out Fedora without having to do a fresh install every time. using cdrecord as non-root - no luck! :(

Hi. I am growing a beard trying to figure out why I cannot burn CDs from a non-root user. I've tried changing permissions on /dev/sg0 and /dev/sg1. I've setuid and guid on /usr/bin/cdrecord. I've used 'sudo'. And still... I get the following error messages! Yet, I can burn as root on the cmdline. Note the "Supported modes:" section is blank. I've tried burning in TAO, SAO and RAW with no luck. up2date failure

I ran up2date earlier today and in the process updated to fedora core 0.95 the following is the messages I get on subsequent runs of up2date. Error communicating with server. The message was: Error Message: Your account does not have access to any channels matching (release='0.95', arch='i686-redhat-linux') If you have a registration number, please register with it first at http://www.redhat.com/apps/activate/ and then try again. Error Class Code: 19 Error Class Info: Architecture and OS version combination is not supported. Explanation: An error has occurred while processing your request. If this problem persists please enter a bug report at bugzilla.redhat.com. If you choose to submit the bug report, please be sure to include details of what you were trying to do when this error occurred and details on how to reproduce this problem. So what's happened?
