Fedora and mainstream redhat compatibility

Hi all, I'm a bit confused about the direction the 'new', Redhat-sponsored Fedora linux is taking, compared to the 'old' Fedora linux. The 'old' Fedora produced third party RPMS for use with the production Redhat releases (Redhat 9 etc). I package a lot of RPM's myself, and had just started to contribute to Fedora. The 'new' Fedora is talking about being a seperate OS. Will I still be able to use Fedora as a source of RPMS to use with the 'standard' Redhat releases? Or do we now need yet another RPM repository to fill this need? Thanks.

Fedora Core NFS installation

Hello, I successfully upgraded Red Hat Linux 9 to Fedora Core 0.94 via NFS. I then proceeded to try a full installation on the same machine via NFS but the installation process halts. I have confirmed the MD5 hash on each iso image is correct. I have extracted each iso image, twice now, using the method described in the README file. The last message to be displayed to tty3 console is as follows: * moving (1) to step installpackage * switching frpom iso 1 to 2 for redhat-artwork-0.81-1.i386 I've tried google on the above info but it returns very little. Anyone able to help? Thanks, Carlos

VFB Resolution Question

Back when I ran Red Hat 9 on my IBM Thinkpad T30, setting VGA=832 in my /etc/lilo.conf gave me exactly what I wanted--64 rows and 175 columns in console mode. Somewhere on the way to Severn this all changed. Now I only get this when I'm running as a portable. But, when I'm docked with a standard monitor plugged into the dock, I only get the standard 25 X 80. Yet, according to the higher resolution supported by the T30 on external displays, it seems I should be geting even more than 64 X 175. Well, I'd be happy to just get 64 X 175. But, what could be preventing it? The system specs include: built-in screen 1400x1050 external display 2048x1536 ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 Graphics type^ SXGA+ Video RAM std./max. 16 MB / 16 MB Video RAM type^ DDR Max resolution (with max video RAM) 2048x1536 Max colors (with max video RAM) 16777216 Graphics bus interface^ AGP 4X

Isn't 192.168.0.x an internal IP address? Initial Question

Hi. I read a lot about fedora but Im not understanding too much about the goals of this project. So, I have some questions: - In the future, will not the RH free edition be available? - If I use RH9 in my installations, should I migrate to Fedora? - Will updates thru up2date toll be available in Fedora? >From the way it is discussed on the site, it seems like the fedora project will be one constant beta test for Redhat to decide what to put into there enterprise edition. This does not seem to be a bad idea for them but for users that were using Redhat 7.3, 8.0, or even 9 will not be able to be sure that it is stable enough to run in production.. This seems like Redhat just lost there ownership of the project enough that it will never be the good product that we have all come to love. I hope I am wrong because I love what Redhat started to do with 8 and 9. This was a very big disappointment for me.

External USB Hard Drive problems...

I am trying to use an external IDE HD plugged into a USB port for backups. I have chosen a WD 120Gb and RH9 recognises it as /dev/sda1 I do fdisk and create the 120Gb partition OK, but when I do a: mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 it creates the first 91 inode tables almost instantly and then it slows down to a crawl, doing 1 every couple of minutes. Then it will suddenly instantly do 5 or 10 and then slow down to a crawl again. It finally completes the 895 in about three quarters of an hour: ======================================================================= # mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1 mke2fs 1.32 (09-Nov-2002) Filesystem label= OS type: Linux Block size=4096 (log=2) Fragment size=4096 (log=2) 14663680 inodes, 29304560 blocks 1465228 blocks (5.00%) reserved for the super user First data block=0 895 block groups 32768 blocks per group, 32768 fragments per group 16384 inodes per group Superblock backups stored on blocks: 32768, 98304, 163840, 229376, 294912, 819200, 884736, 1605632, 2654208, 4096000, 7962624, 11239424, 20480000, 23887872 Writing inode tables: 96/895 ======================================================================= After this completes, I can mount the drive and use rsync to write to it with no errors, no speed issues and no apparent problems. :-) However: When I re-run rsync to update the backups I get many errors, saying files don't exist. On further inspection I find that the file that it is looking for is ".thisisthefile", when the file backed up is "thisisthefile". However, many files names are correct (without the dot) and there are no errors when reading/writing to them. Huh? I try and rename the file with mv and it says that there is no space left on the device. I do a df and find that I have only used about 30Gb of the 120Gb total. It seems as though this is a default error message as the OS is having trouble talking to the USB subsystem. I can create a file on the mounted /dev/sda1 with vi or touch with no problems, in spite of the "no space" error. All of this seems to point to some sort of HD/Controller/Interface type issue. I have 2 of these external WD drives and I have tried both of them and they both react the same way. The motherboard is an ASUS P4P800 with USB2 ports. I can't use hdparm to talk to the drive as Linux thinks that the USB drive is a SCSI drive. I understand that a 120Gb-sized partition can be easily accommodated by the 2.4.20-13.9 kernel. If you think that I am nonplussed, you would be correct!! :-) Does anyone have ANY IDEA what is going on???? Cheers, Brad

3 soundcards

hello i've got 3 soundevices on my computer 1) onboardsound 2) pci-soundcard 3) webcam (the microphon) all these devices are running wihtout any problems. the problem ist that i can not use all devices at the same time. i think that i've got not enough sound devices in the /dev/ directory. i 've got only devices for two sounddevices mixer mixer1 can someone tell me how to create the files (newbie) for a third sounddevice? i read the manual from MAKEDEV but i haven't found any parameters that added me a new sounddevice. thanks martin

"Considering the fact that every single package in rawhide is currently maintained by Red Hat employees, and we are diligently working every day to improve the Fedora Core release and fix as many bugs as possible, I'm not sure exactly how "Redhat just lost there ownership of the project" as you state above. While we have opened up the project to the community, the infrastructure is not yet in place to allow external developers to maintain or contribute packages, and so for all intents and purposes, Fedora Core 1, is very much a distribution developed by Red Hat not much differently than Red Hat Linux 9, or Red Hat Linux 8.0, 7.x, etc." Currently they are all maintained by Redhat but since they plan on turning it over to the public more, that will be a harder task to watch what all these guys are doing to every package that comes out. Considering the fact that they are not even willing to support it any more for even the 30 day installation shows their loss of ownership. They keep close ties on the project so they have all testing on the packages for their commercial line. I don't believe that it will be as stable as the OLD REDHAT because they will be letting so many people touch it and too many people be involved that it will be more likely to have bugs. When Redhat was in full control they knew every change that happened. With so many cooks in the kitchen you will never know everything that was changed always leaving some mess around. They want to develop and let users use it for only the benefit of adding fully tested products to their enterprise edition. If they really wanted to merge with a group to make stable and more advanced version of Linux that everyone could enjoy, why not merge with a group more similar to Debian. They have a good and stable release but are lacking on the ease of use that someone like Redhat has. This would be a better and more positive move forward for the Linux community. They already have tons of developers that are working together on a common goal. So far the project might be the same as Redhat 9 but the future is what I am referring to. Like I said before TOO many cooks in the kitchen will lead to a big mess.
