Okay - Gripe time

I thought - great, new fedora release, let's look at the release notes to see what's in store. WHOA!!! perfect!!! built-in ACPI support!!! no more rebuilding custom kernels to handle power management and so on... right? WRONG!!! *sigh* it's only going to be used for device enumeration, not power management and so on. I have a fairly new, low-end Compaq notebook that only has an ACPI subsystem, no APM. So in order to get power management and various other little tricks (specifically changing the display brightness and auto-switching between the touchpad and the PS/2 mouse), i had to compile up a custom kernel, patched with ACPI support. Please please please please please can we try to get power management and stuff into the ACPI support before Fedora Core 9.1 (or 10, or are they numbering the releases from 1 again?). Everything else about this release has me excited - but I probably wont be upgrading my notebook until this is sorted. Oh and one more thing - someone plese wave a wand and get 2D/3D accelerated support for the Radeon Mobility U1 (IGP 320M) into the kernel and auto-detecting at install :-) Now *that* would be sweet.

Intel ICH5 SATA Raid Support

Hi, will the final version for Fedora Core 1 include support for intel ICH5 SATA Raid? Currently I'm useing Intel S875WP1-E server board and it comes with a linux hardware raid driver software. But the problem with the hardware raid driver software is that it does not work for RedHat 9.0 and Fedora test 2. Intel state that the driver is meant for redhat 8.0 but i do not want to revert back to a older redhat in order to use it. I find it strange that the raid driver can only support a particular version of redhat and i forsee that there will be incompatibility problems if i choose to use redhat 8.0 and upgrade the software components from there. Will Fedora include the driver for the SATA Raid? hope to see it happens... Sam

ACPI Question

I know this isn't that technical a list - but there seems to be some bright folks on the list. I need to have acpi=on in order to get sound and my PCMCIA slot working, not to mention some of the other buttons/functions. When I enable acpi my fan kicks into high gear and eats up 99% of the CPU time. The system crawls. Anyone experience something like this? How did you handle it? Hints, tips, tricks? Thanks in advance. Hardware: ASUS M3000N (M3N) 1.4Ghz Pentium-M (centrino) Also - I really like Fedora. very fast and usable. I have even been using Gnome, which i never have been able to use for more than a short period of time. Good work everyone. -- W. Hi all, i don't know if anyone had got the problem, openoffice is installed on my system but i don't find it in the menu. Is The only solution is to create teh launcher manually ??? thanks

Hi This does not work. The first command you suggest wants me to run rhn_register which fails. The second command does not understand the --import option! Hello everybody, I've just install Fedora 0.95 on my test machine (was RH 9.0). I'm using apt-rpm for packages management and very happy with it !! I read that fedora use yum and/or apt-rpm with up2date ? I browsed the ML archive but there's not real explanation about this "merge". Can you send me links that explain this feature ? Thanks !

Hi, I am doing an up2date after installing Fedora test 3: Does anyone else get a warning about the packages not being signed with GPG?? This is potentially dangerous, right? Should I not proceed with the up2dates. Thanks, Ernest L. Williams Jr. ORNL

Newcomer's questions - things are improving...

My thanks to those who replied last night. I have managed to get incoming ssh working - I had misconfigured the firewall during the installation process - but lokkit let me fix that. My graphics card is a Radion 9600 - I will try to get drivers for that... The printer still won't print - I agree with whoever told me that the web interface is nice but rarely useful - at least not for debugging purposes for me... One thing I forgot to ask about in my first message - Galeon was not included in the original Fedora installation - is it available now? Where can I find it? And can someone bring me up to date on how (and when and how often) I should be upgrading my Fedora kernel and the various other packages (like evolution, galeon, etc. etc.) Running 'up2date' tells me the system is up to date now - will that locate new kernels when they become available or do I have to go hunting for patches and rpms? If the latter, then where do I need to be looking? Thanks very much for the help, nbc
