looking ahead
by Anthony Perez-Miller
Greetings all,
I've been lurking in one of the usenet linux groups, and have seen several
times the complaint that Red Hat 9 is slow on some systems.
My linux box is a Dell P2, 400Mhz, 256k memory. Should I have any
difficulties running Red Hat 10?
Also, will Red Hat 10 be released with a 2.6 kernel?
And finally: my Christmas present this year will hopefully be a broadband
connection. Anyone have recommendations for brands of cable modems and
routers? (Home network will be linux box strung to router via ethernet,
and a wireless laptop running [gasp] Windows XP.)
thanks much,

No more doughnuts, hmmmm.....
by Chuck Talk
Wow, that quickly devolved into a rant about costs and a lot of other
things. How about we ask for an answer to the original question?
When will the RHL Project page be updated?
Also, when is the next court date with those marvelous mavens from Lindon,
Utah? Many would like to see what kind of heresy they post next.
Further, I have taken action with the EFF and you can too!
See: http://action.eff.org/action/index.asp?step=2&item=2775
And join in on the call to stop their Public Intellectual Property theft.
Thx
Chuck
And now, back to our story, already in progress...

Better than Daniel's recent suggestion, IMHO is the useNoSSLForPackages
option. Point all of your servers at the same squid proxy, turn on the
use no SSL option, and all is well.
On that note, there's no good reason for packages to be downloaded via
SSL, since they're all GPG signed anyway. Can we have
useNoSSLForPackages=1 made the default in the next version of RHL?

John in correct.
We do have several machines that use Enterprise Linux, that is for those one
or two machines that have to have them, like Oracle servers.
We have read through the license several times, and it is of our opinion that
we cannot just get one or ten Enterprise Linux machines, and then put the
patches out. Every once in a while we are told we can by one person or
another, but we always go back to the license, and don't do it.
Could we buy in bulk? Well, maybe we could. But that would be an extremely
big break in our policies and what we do.
We customize the base RedHat so that it is customized for Fermi's enviroment,
and also so users support goes through us as much as we can make it possible.
(We make it so up2date doesn't turn on, and yum, pointed at us, does. As
well as other things.) And we give these releases to, pretty much anyone who
asks.
If we arn't able to freely distribute the releases, our entire infrastructure
would have to be redone.

Partition Size on RH 9 Installation
by Scot Huntsberry
I am going to reinstall RH 9 tomorrow because my system has gotten so
slow that it is ridiculous. I was wondering if I could get some
suggestions oh how to best partition a 50gb hard drive to maximize the
efficiency of the system. I would really appreciate any suggestions the
group could provide.
Thanks,
Scot

Need help with Limewire installation
by Shadhin rahman
I downloaded j2sdk and installed on my linux box. It
was a .bin file to be exact
j2sdk-1.4.2-nb-3.5-bin-linux.bin. The installation
went through properly. I installed it on the opt
directory because it was the default directory. Now I
went on and tried to install the LimeWire software.
When I tried to do so it was giving me and eror that
it could not find the vm. The exact error is given
below
Extracting the installation resources from the
installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's
environment...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.
Now I dont know what to do. I think I need to
redirect the path for the VM or something. If anyone
has any suggestion, Please help me

Usernames
by Charles Bronson
Maybe this is the wrong list to ask this on. If so, please accept my appogies
and kindly redirect me.
I noticed in Shrike and now Severn that usernames can only be lowercase (at
least in the GUI tool, I haven't checked useradd). I am wondering why caps are
no longer allowed?
Thank you.
