SCSI Loop Mounting Bug -- Severn Installation
by Janina Sajka
Please pardon me for not using Bugzilla, but I don't find Buzilla at all
easy to use with my eyes-free interface ...
I have discovered a bug in the Red Hat installation involving SCSI
disks. I have two on one of my systems, a hard disk at /dev/sda, and a
Castlewood Orb at /dev/sdb. If media is NOT present in the Orb, the
installation fails right after the selection of source media -- right
after "Starting Anaconda, ..."
I get the correctidentification of my monitor and video, and the system
sees my mouse. But that's it. Looking in Console #4 I see an error to
the effect: "Unable to read partition table on /dev/sdb."
If I put media in my Orb drive, everything progresses as it should.
Of course the Orb should be marked as, and treated as, removable
media--just like a CD ROM.

RedHat 9.A - Add/Remove Software
by Klaus Zahradnik
Hy-
I bought both issues of the RedHat Linux Magazine. I made a fresh install with the CDs from the second issue (RH9.A).
After the installation is comleted, you cannot add nor remove software with the packet manager. It will fail. It does work however, when you use the "old" RedHat9 CDs.
I just thought I'd share this with you.
best regards

I uninstalled magicdev and that did the trick for me.

That did it. I'm sorry to have wasted your time... the dialog clearly
instructed me to do that too, and I missed it. Thanks for responding.
It's this sort of thing that makes Red Hat the unique company that it
is. You rock.
Again, thank you.

Thanks again. I tried again using redhat-config-network-1.2.15-1,
redhat-config-network-tui-1.2.15-1, and rhpl-0.93.4-1, and it is still
broken.
Here's a reproducer:
1. kickstart a box fresh
2. install latest versions of r-c-n, r-c-n-tui, and rhpl
3. click Hat menu / System Settings / Network
4. click "new"
5. select wireless connection
6. select the first wireless card from the "select wireless device"
menu. (in my case, it's "Lucent Orinoco and Prism II-based PCMCIA
wireless (eth1)")
7. enter the WEP key in the Key section of next screen
8. click next, then apply
9. /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth1:
# Please read /usr/share/doc/initscripts-*/sysconfig.txt

what's behind the scenes of redhat-config-network-gui ?
by Aaron Bennett
Hi --
Can somene tell me what goes on "behind the scenes" of
redhat-config-network-gui? Especially with regard to creating a new
wireless connection with this tool.
The reason I ask is, with Red Hat 9 on a Dell C640 and a Dell TrueMobile
1150 ( Lucent card, the orinoco driver works ), when I create a new
wireless connection using redhat-config-network-gui, it doesn't work.
Activating the card doesn't work, and it never gets an IP address and
never contacts the nearest WAP.
However, if I then do:
iwconfig eth1 key {OUR WEP KEY},
followed by /sbin/service network restart,
it works. However, after the next reboot, it doesn't work again, and
iwconfig shows no wep key.
Can someone tell me either a) how to fix this so it works with
redhat-config-network-gui or b) what r-c-n-g actually does, so I can fix
it myself?
Thanks,
Aaron Bennett

Problems with partitioning in RH9
by mafelix@apropo.ro
Hi,
I am trying to install RH9 from CD on a 40 Gig HD in a brand new system. Choose automatic
partitioning with Disk Druid on hda, get the three recommended partitions:
dev/hda1 /boot ext3 102 MB 1 13
dev/hda2 / ext3 38492 MB 14 4933
dev/hda3 swap 510 MB 4934 4998
and when trying to install the packages I get a window saying "Formatting /
filesystem" and the system freezes right there! After 1-2 minutes another warning "An error occured
trying to format hda2. This problem is serious and the install cannot continue. Please to reboot your
system". Choosing manual partitioning with Disk Druid produces the same output. I also tried to install
Red Hat 8 and Mandrake 9.0 /9.1 and the same result: installation stops at partitioning!
Several times the install process produced a bug report regarding anaconda and asked me
to save it on a diskette but the install terminated with a crash and I could not save the info!
A crash or a reboot follows and I have no clue what is the problem! Maybe my BIOS has a
problem with
the disk geometry! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Felix

I would love the possibility of choosing other filesystems besides ext2 and
ext3. Specifically ReiserFS.
