Qt (>= Qt 3.0) not found
by Florian Sievert
Hi,
i noticed meanwhile several times that I am not able to compile one or another software using qt. I always getting the same error:
checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!
This time during the try to compile superkaramba. I searched around a while (also this list) and noticed that
someone points out the file /etc/profile.d/qt.sh and that the qt dir may be set wrong.
However after starting the script an "echo $QTDIR" gives back an /usr/lib/qt-3.1. For me this doesn look fine. I also noticed an tip to give the qt-dir as param for configure:
./configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib/qt-3.1. With the same effect, the qt-lib isn't found again. I am currently running out of good ideas? What could went wrong? I also doesn't found any really usefull hint in the config.log, but I found it strange that there wasn't anything behind the lines with qt-libaries and qt-includes.
Sorry, if i couldn't see the problem, but I don't really understand why he is not finding the qt-lib, that is physically is installed and the important sys-var $QTDIR also seems to have the right directory.
Thanks :)

smb-shares
by Sturla Holm Hansen
I'm having probles when using nautilus to browse smb-shares, either on
another linux-box or on a windoze-box, it takes ages to connect, then
I'm asked for a password and then it takes ages again.
Finally I get a list of the shares on the box, when double-clicking one
of them it takes ages AGAIN, but when I'm finally inside a share things
seem to be working fine....
Any ideas?

idiot database flamewars
by Richard Welty
could you guys kindly please stop it?
i'm no fan of M$, and i like postgresql a lot, but face facts here.
the guy is proposing a major migration of his desktops. no sane
IT shop would simultaneously migrate an entire database
infrastructure. what he needs are working ODBC or JDBC
drivers so the apps on the linux desktops can talk to M$ SQL
Server, nothing more and nothing less. both options should
work; he didn't give enough information about his desktop
App to really suggest which he needed.
PostgreSQL and MySQL may not even meet the needs of
said IT shop, none of you have any idea what their schemas
or SQL look like. i've dabbled in Oracle->PostgreSQL migration
before, and it can be pretty challenging if certain "features"
were used by the Oracle developers.
MS SQL Server-> <some Open Source DB> is likely to be
every bit as challenging, so it's pretty silly to propose it in
this case.
this flame war is a real waste of bandwidth.
sheesh,
richard

Sql
by Chadley Wilson
Hi everyone,
I cant seem to find anyone who can help
I am trying to get our in house app which connects to an SQL2000-ent
sever to run in linux, I have the app running just fine but I cant get
connection to the database,
When you install it in windoze all you have to install is client
connectivity, I have browsed the win dirs on my XP system but there are
no files installed. but it works.
Cant I use the linux sql to some how get the link.
The other Problem I think I am faced with is the fact that linux doesn't
log into the domain. Is it possible to logon to the windoze domain with
Fedora?
The I also need to map the directory to the U drive in my wine folder.
Please if you have any Ideas I will be throwing a party on your behalf.
A BIG BIG thanks for any help in advance,
You folks are great.

dovecot-0.99.10.x or Mozilla label bug?
by Rick Johnson
I recently switched from UW-IMAP to Dovecot IMAP and from mbox to
Maildir directories on a server. On a different server, I've been using
Dovecot with mbox for some time and recently converted it to Maildir as
well. In both cases, I'm using Mozilla or Thunderbird as my client.
It appears that after switching from mbox where label flags are stored
in headers to Maildir where the flags are stored at the tail of the
filename, that message labels were "Broken". Message labels appear to be
reverse associated with letters. Label 1 being f, Label 2 - d, 3 - c, 4
- b, and 5 - a.
How comes the problem. If I set one label and leave it, there's no
problem. However if I change a label on a message, or attempt to remove
it, it appears that dovecot isn't removing the previous label flag, but
instead adding a new label. If I'm switching from 5 to 3, it appends c
to a, and the client won't notice the difference. However, I can't
switch back from 3 to 5, since the flags are stored alphabetically, and
the previous flags aren't removed. Instead - the old label sticks. I can
apply all labels, and all "characters" remain in the filename, however
the "highest" in the alphabet is what gets displayed, and I end up with
a trailer on the file of "abcdf".
Proper behavior would be to remove the previous label flag before
applying a new one. This didn't appear to be a problem in the mbox
version since the labels were stored in the headers under X-Label or
something like that.
Interestingly, Evolution 1.4 is able to clear the labels, but only does
so after you exit the client.
This happens under 0.99.10-6 (core 1) and 0.99.10.4-1 (devel).
Bugzilla time? I filed 114230 for Dovecot, but I'm not 100% sure if this
is a Dovecot or Mozilla issue. I'm leaning toward Dovecot not clearing
previous labels, since the mail client generally doesn't "care" what
backend format you're using and this wasn't a problem with mbox
formatted msgs.

Anti-virus Programs
by Carter J. Castor
I know that the number and popularity of viruses for Linux is extremely
lower than Windoze; however, I am on a university network that has
viruses floating around like an AIDS convention so I would like to have
some sort of anti-virus program running in the background. The ones I
find are either a) commercial apps b) exclusively for e-mail c) open
source ones that don't look very complete. What do you guys use for
non-email based virus scanners?

Upgrading Production line PCs
by Chadley Wilson
Very a jolly big Hello to all of you,
I have potentially good news,
My bosses and I have decide to give Xplease a huge finger.
We are going to upgrade all of our bench PCs (28 of them) to 2 gig
celerons for the production line.
We want to load .... YES! FC2 or 1 if 2 isnt ready by then,
We have one problem I have been working on but no-one seems to know how
to fix,
Our in house app needs client connectivity to the ms-sql database.
mmmm!
Toughest thing for me yet.
All I can say is I really hope it will work.
Have a smashing crashing and bug squishing weekend
see ya all on monday.
Cheers
