vsftpd connection problem.
by Bob Hartung
Hi all,
I have a little ftp server set up on a home network. I keep getting
the following error when
I try to connect.
"vsftpd refusing to run with writable anonymous root"
The /var/ftp/pub directory is owned by user ftp and group ftp. I do not
see where any rights are given to root in vsftpd.conf.
Where do I start looking? I have read through man vsftpd_conf several
times.
Thanks,
Bob

Directory Permissions
by Luis A. La Luz
I know that there is an obvious answer to this but just started using
Linux Fedora Core and need help. I have a dual boot system with Linux
Fedora and Win XP Home. I have Windows on a NTFS partition but put in a
30 gbyte vfat partition on the same 120 gbyte hard drive in order to
share files between systems. I have Linux On a 20 gbyte separate drive.
I have documents that I want to access and write to from Linux in the
vfat partition. I edited the fstab file to mount the vfat partition
with the following line;
/dev/hda5 /win vfat default 0 0
Now when I boot up I can access the documents and read and write as root
but as a regular user I can only read. I looked up the chmod command and
tried to use it as root to change the permissions to the win directory
and also used the chown command to change ownership of the directory.
The system won't let me do either, even as root. I also tried to change
it fro the console as root but it denied permission. Is it a problem
with vfat directories or did i edit the fstab file wrong?
I love working with Linux as I am older and remember my days with DOS
prompt when learning to use the system was a challenge.

New uFAQ yum.conf
by Maxwell Kanat-Alexander
Hey all you Fedora users!
I've put up a new yum.conf in the Unofficial Fedora FAQ. I was noticing
that some of the mirrors have become slow, so I switched some things
around and it seems much faster now.
As always, if you have any comments, feel free to email me directly!
Hope you enjoy the yum.conf! :-)

Advanced tar question
by Charles Howse
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hi,
How can I pass a *list* of excluded *directories* to tar? Would it be
delimited by whitespace, comma, quoted or what? I'll ultimately want to
create this list as a variable.
I also want to preserve existing ownership and permissions.
I'm using the following command at this point, but I can't find anything in
man tar about excluding more than one pattern...or did I miss something?
[charles@moe charles]$ tar cvCfz /home/charles /tmp/my_home_dir.tgz .
- --exclude /home/charles/.giFT/

Just a few questions
by Richmond Pabilona
Hi guys,
Fedora's hits per day is sky rocketing, on distrowatch you can see
that fedora moved to second place behind mandrake! Going to my
questions, I'm a java developer and i would like to help the fedora
community fix some bugs, the problem is i don't know where to start, can
you guys point me to where i can the APIs i need, also i would like to
start debugging the easier fixes :) to at least familiarize myself with
the codes on linux, which bugs are the easiest to fix? On my other
question, does gnome have a functionality like windows wherein you can
click on the Start menu and explore it, move, arrange or place the
icons/shortcuts, because for example i installed yahoomessenger and it
appeared to be in the Internet -> more internet applications folder, i
don't know how to move it to the main Internet folder. Also there seems
to be a bug in the Drawer object that you can place in the taskbar on
gnome, because when i place it on my taskbar and started adding objects
on it, it work fine at first(i can launch the objects on a single click
e.g. ymessenger) but i notice that whenever i logout and log back in, i
can see the objects inside the drawer but i can now not click on the them?
Thanks,
Richmond

Kernel Panic Error- Please help
by Christian Castaldo
I am new to linux so any answer I would appreciate in the simplest plainest
language possible. I am getting the same error regardless of which
distribution I try and install on my machine. Currently, I am using a
purchased cd of the lastest fedora dist (text only, no graphics). I get
this error after the cd boots and I start the install. It stops at this
point.
crc error(6) freeing initd memory: 2941 freed
EXT-2 -fs unable to read superblock iso_fs_read_super: bread failed
dev=09:02, iso_blkenum=16, block=32
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 09:02
My system is a pentium 233, 4 gig hd and 128 meg ram. Old but should work.
It has one partition active right now - a 1 gig dos partition. I know it is
not my cds. I think something is screwy in my bios settings. Also I was
able to install basic linux earlier in the day but after I repartitioned the
hard drive to add the swap and linux partitions (which I have since wiped
with fdisk) I have hit this same error over and over. Any help would be
huge. Thanks in advance.
- Chris
