RE: rsyncing 79gb of data to 250gb drive
by David Maynard
I would suspect that some of the source files are "sparse." Ie. there are
"holes" in the middle of them where space hasn't been allocated in the
source directory. Some applications that use random file access will create
sparse files. A simple copy operation that doesn't look for sparse files
will fill in the holes, causing the copy to take up more space than the
original.
I haven't tried it (at least not recently), but rsync appears to have a
"--sparse" (-S) option. Try using that in addition to -av and see if that
changes the results. GNU tar has a similar option.

Subject: rsyncing 79gb of data to 250gb drive
Hi,
I have an issue which I can't seem to figure out.
I bought a 250Gb Maxtor Maxline Plus ATA133 drive,
plugged it into a server, formatted it using:
# e2fsck -m 0 -j -b 1024 /dev/hdc1
I made the partition a Linux partition id 82.
After format, 241Gb free space is recognised.
I have 80Gb of data on another drive in the system
that I wish to backup onto this drive. So after
rsyncing the drives contents from the 79Gb (which is
on a stripe) to the maxtor 250Gb drive, the following
is the result:
/dev/md6 85419328 79573952 1506236
99% /data01
/dev/hdc1 241201359 123508888 117692471
52% /data02
123Gb used??? this is what is confusing me, why?
I first formatted this drive using 4096 block size and
got the result above, then I thought I'll reformat it
and change it to 1024 byte block size to try and get
back some space, the same result above.
I've also made sure (with tune2fs) that the "sparse"
option is turned on for the large filesystem.
I thought maybe the rsync was following symlinks
(which I'm sure there are none), but by default the
command:
rsync -av
won't do that. I checked for pipe and socket files
using find, and also couldn't see anything suspicious.
I'm at a loss to figure this one out and thought I'd
email here for some help.
Thanks.
Michael.

As Fedora does not include multimedia tools that people are used to in
Windows, it could be a problem. Licensing issues aside, new users
coming from the Windows world will be quickly frustrated due to this.
A simple method to upgrade to a full multimedia package needs to be
looked at. Even in business, multimedia is now required to view
various advertising or product information packages. This must not be
via searches and multiple WWW sites but a single site with possibly a
single click. A WWW link on the desktop to an offshore (outside US if
required) to a setup/install script for multimedia access.
It should be as easy as "yum install multimedia".
I know that we all have our own favorite packages for Multimedia but
Linux is known for having more than one package that can do the same job.
Linux is moving more and more into the main stream. Start thinking of
the lowest common denominator and try making FC work for these people.

netgear router locks up ONLY when downloading fedora??????????????????

netgear router locks up ONLY when downloading fedora??????????????????
Well not quite true, there appear to be 2 circumstances under which this
happens.
1) a rare power fluctuation.
2) common if trying to download cd sized iso's from overloaded sites.
3) there haven't been any other times when this has happened.
- -see the detailed narrative below-
Questions:
1) What is it about downloading large files from overloaded sites that
can cause an otherwise stable netgear RP614 10/100 router to lock up?
2) Can I prevent it?
3) is there a RELIABLE method of downloading such large files that will
ALWAYS resume an interrupted download rather than downloading the same
bytes over again???
I can't figure this out. But actually I've had this router as long as
I've had a cable modem. And except for when trying to download LARGE iso
images from VERY busy sites, (such as any source of fedora shortly after
a core release) the only other time I've seen this is sometimes after a
local power fluctuation (when the lights dimmed but the clocks didn't
forget what time it was). The first time that happened I called my cable
tech help, and was eventually told to unplug the router, for a couple
seconds, and then reboot (he was a windows guy of course) I took this to
mean cold start the router and then ifdown eth0, ifup eth0. And this
worked like a charm. Fortunately such power fluctuations are rare in my
neighborhood, so are not a problem.
But the other time this happens is MUCH more annoying.
That is when trying to download a linux distro. I remember having
similar problems ( though not as severe ) when I downloaded mdk 9.1. and
when I got FC1. In both of those cases, it was more than a month after
release so the download volume may have been less than was the case when I
just spent days, getting the FC2 iso files...
When I go to (pick any eastern US fedora mirror) And try to get all the
binary iso's, Some of the sites seam faster than others. so even with
broadband, mozilla may estimate around 4 hours to get one iso. No problem
start the downloads and go to bed. Get up in the morning to find that I
got disk1 & disk4, downloads for disk2 & disk3 were stuck at around
400MB each. Ping failed to reach my email provider, so I reset the
router, and did the ifdown/ifup sequence, ping now worked. But of course
the downloads didn't resume. The next attempt bagged disk2 before another
router lockup murdered about 500MB of disk3. Spent the day trying to get
the remaining iso. Trying one mirror after another. Each time somewhere
between 1/2 and 4/5 of the way through... the router locks up. (That is,
if the site yielded a faster download, the lock-up happened sooner, and
a slower download stayed running longer. But the result was the same, an
incomplete download of the disk3 iso...)
The next day I remembered that when I used to use konqueror back in my
dial-up days (may they never come again) konqueror used to sometimes
resume downloading an incomplete file. So I spent another day getting
disk3. I don't know what I was doing wrong, konqueror kept starting over
just like mozilla had. But eventually I tried:
http://mirror.hiwaay.net/redhat/fedora/linux/core/2/i386/iso/
And got a connection that kept slowing down to a crawl but never quite
gave up. My lady made me go to the store(s) with her, and when I came
back it was still chugging away. Though konqueror's estimate of the
remaining time kept changing from about 30 min to as much as 3 more
hours and back... I went to bed. This morning (FINALLY) I've got the last
iso... But I don't know why it was so difficult. I don't even
have a clue where to look it up...
Any help, advice, heck even *informative* flames, would be welcome. I'd
gladly RT(specified)FM if someone would at least point me at the right book.
Thank you very much.

FC2 Emacs very slow to load
by Clint Harshaw
This is a fresh install of FC2. There is a file that seems to be slowing
down emacs when it is opened. When I type emacs foo at the prompt, the
following file seems to bring emacs to a crawl:
Loading /usr/share/emacs/site-list/site-start.d/iiimecf-init.el
This delay is around 5 seconds before the buffer is displayed in emacs.
I have tried putting my old .emacs file in my /home/username directory,
but that has no effect, because this file seems to be loading before my
.emacs file is loaded.
I have tried inserting the line below, and that doesn't change things:
(setq inhibit-default-init t)
Does anyone else have these symptoms with emacs in FC2? This wasn't
happening in FC1, and a Google search for the above file wasn't helpful,
except to see that it is part of fedora.
Thanks,
Clint

Can't copy files in *.dat form VCD
by Parameshwara Bhat
Hello List,
I have played files with extensions *.dat with both 'xine' and
'mplayer'.The vcd of the film "Unfaithful" has three files in the 'MPEG'
folder,Music01.dat,Music02.dat,Music03.dat.I played this file from the cd
in Windows Media player as well as SiS mmplayer. Now I copied those files
to a separate directory and later opened them using both Mplayer and Xine.
Xine even has a file filter for *.dat type of files.Mplayer like its
namesake Mediaplayer doesn't automatically filter the files but once
selected using filter "all files",it plays it anyway. But both these
programs fail to run the same files from the CD when tried with Play
File.(They can very well play the VCD containing these files)whereas if
these files are copied to harddisk they can play it.
Curiously within Linux, these files cannot be copied off CD.But,once in
Windows, you can copy them and store them. Both Xine and Mplayer play them
now once they are stored like this. And that's how VCDs are kept on the
harddisk by all my friends here.
This is curious.Could anybody shed more light?

Can Fedora Be Booted From an External USB Drive?
by Rick Bilonick
I've heard about large hard drives or memory sticks that can be plugged
into the USB port. Is it possible to configure a new(er) Gateway desktop
to boot from a drive connected to the USB port? I've taken a new
position and have found that the IT department here has more Nazis than
the IT department at my previous position and I'm leery about adding
Linux to a partition on my harddrive. (I think they would notice GRUB. I
was "scolded" for adding Mozilla and OpenOffice to my computer. They
want to add ALL software. Of course, all they know is Windows.
Apparently we exist to serve the IT department not the other way
around.) I'm not that familiar with Gateways and of course there are no
manuals or Windows XP disks for the current system. I am getting a new
Gateway in a week or so. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
(BTW, they want us to shutdown our computersevery night. What a world.)

FC2 - Another Newbie Question
by Betti Ann & Preston Smith
Where can one find a comprehensive list of the various utilities that are
available to examine/change/configure/add/delete various aspects of
Fedora? Such as the 'switch desk' utility someone just mentioned ....
Such info should be in a Linux/Fedora Newcomers FAQ so that we do not have
to bother people with these basics.
Regretfully, this is a very basic question that in my mind must be answered
if neophytes like me are ever to make a 100 per cent conversion to Linux.
