vpnclient and host lookups

I did note that a host lookup using host -T does work, however standard
DNS lookups, like when using the browser, fail. My guess is that for
some reason the Cisco client does not pass UDP packets. I am guessing
here. Has anyone found a solution/workaround? Is there a way to default
DNS lookups to use TCP packets instead?

How do you read sylpheed local mail?

I've been using sylpheed mail program and would like to read from my
local user mailbox. i.e. /var/spool/mail/rmiles. I set up the account
as instructed to use None (local). I used fetchmail to download my mail
from my isp. But I can't figure out how to read from my mailmox. Can a
syplheed guru tell me how the get mail for rmiles?

A backup problem

I am installing Linux Fedora Core 2 over a an older RedHat version, 7.1. The
application is a complex one providing a real-time video feed. While
reasonably schooled in the application side there are any number of esoteric
pieces I am struggling with. Specifically something as simple as backing up
the system.
I've tried TAR and SMB only to create ever increasing volumes. The problem I
think is that my attempts are chasing the links instead of simply backing up
the links. I simply want to create a backup that I can copy back, untar or
the like, if I must re-create the system. All my software is a CVS archive,
however much of the meddling I've done to Linux is in the libs, file
structures, links, .conf files and the like.
Any direction will be greatly appreciated.

Establishing a mail-only account?

Is there a way to define a user account for a remote user such that the
user can ONLY retrieve his/her
mail via POP3 or IMAP, and cannot run any other functionality (such as
shell, or ftp?)
I am running FC2 server, command line only.

Installing RPM s

Ive just startet using fedora.. but when i try to install RPM software the
computer is asking me what software i would like to use to open the RPM
files.. i dont now what to say.. i dont know what the RPM installler is
called in fedora.. please help me...

All inexpensive routers (those intended to share a DSL or cable modem
connection) use NAT by default. That's because the ISP only provides
a single public IP address to the typical residential or small business
user. In your present setup, you can ping from 192.168.2.125 to
192.168.2.1 . While doing this, run ethereal or tcpdump on 192.168.1.1
and look at the ICMP request packets coming in. I'll bet that the
source address will be 192.168.1.7, rather than 192.168.2.125, showing
that NAT is enabled. On many small routers, it's not possible to
turn NAT off. On some Linksys models, in Advanced->Routing, you
can change the Operating Mode from Gateway to Router to disable NAT.
But IMHO, that is not the right solution for you, because you have
no administrative control over your Internet router, and you would
need to change settings there, if you want to have the Linksys be
non-NAT and still provide Internet access to the wireless clients.

Sorry if I was not clear. I meant to say that you should change
it to avoid a conflict on the next step. But I now know (from
another message you sent) that the Linksys WAN address was supplied
by DHCP from the Internet router, so you don't need to do anything
but disconnect the WAN port and reboot the Linksys.

I meant that you should disable the Linksys DHCP server. On my WRT54G,
on the DHCP tab, there is a DHCP Server: entry that you can set to
Disable. On your model, it may be different.

I assume that you meant to say "... could not establish a mail server" :)
I believe that your trouble was the conflicting DHCP servers. Try this
again, after disabling the Linksys DHCP server, and resetting the Linksys
LAN address to 192.168.1.x that does not conflict with other hosts on
your LAN, and is out of the range of addresses handed out by your Internet
router.
If it still doesn't work, please tell me the models of your Linksys and
Internet routers, and what service(s) on the wireless LAN that you want
to access from your server.

Simple database

Is anyone using a simple database on FC2? I have a pile of notes on my
desk from tips on this list and changes. It would be nice if it could
import files so I could use it for other things, but I just want to set
up a few fields and be able to search through them.

Programming IDE

This might be a little off-topic, but then again it's a matter of finding
what's out there that I can run on FC2.
At the moment I'm doing some C programming of simulations for the
mathematics problems we're looking at.
So the projects aren't huge, and not aimed at multi-desktop/OS
compatibility. Currently they utilise
a collection of source/include files, and bring them together with a
single hand-written makefile. No use of
gtk or qt - they use either the EFL (enlightenment libraries) or Glut for
window management.
All I'm looking for is an IDE which can bring these together and allow me
to point it at the makefile I wish
to use for compilation purposes (saves me having 10 vim windows open at
once).
I had a look at Kdevelop and Anjuta, but creation of any sort of project
seems to run off and automate a
procedure that sets up links, configure scripts, multiple makefiles - none
of which I need. If you do any
programming on FC, what do you use for small programs that aren't on the
scale of kde or gnome applications?
Or is there a way to force kdevelop or anjuta to do what I'm looking for?

Unfortunately it did not work for me.
The same errors appear when I try to establish the connection with
"pppd call adsl"
...
Timeout: Sending LCP Config-Requests
...
This whole issue about USB ADSL modems and Linux is just a pain in the
a**!
I will buy an Ethernet Modem now.
