This is ridiculous;
OK so I decided to setup http based installations out of desperation,
I copied the install dir fc1 to my http folder .
I forgot to edit the ks.cfg (kickstart file) which is set to nfs, the line is:
nfs --server=192.168.2.1 --dir=/fc1
Booting from cdrom I use the option:
linux ks=http://192.168.2.1/fc1/ks.cfg
and then it mounts my nfs share /fc1 and the install rocks on.
So I figured that nfs has mysteriously decided to work so I try
linux ks=nfs:192.168.2.1:/fc1/ks.cfg
and it fails to mount the share.
So I know it is a problem between named and dhcp but what is the problem.
Please can someone give me a clue
PS:clues do not include man pages or google I have read and can't see the
light.

Absolute Beginner
by Paul
I'm keen to start using an alternative to Windows and have installed Fedora Core 1 to a second hard drive. It looks to be an exciting prospect, however I could do with some beginners help. I am unsure, at the moment, as to how I can install further programmes from a CD. Are there any tutorials for Fedora that I could see ?
I eagerly await your assistance !
Thanks Paul

I am not getting any problems from my logs at all,
The strange thing here is that if I run "service named stop" then nfs works.
I manufacture PCs and you will be happy to know that I have already built
approx 4000 systems loaded with FC1 / 2 Linux this year. To speed up the
installations via the network I setup a dns server and a dhcp to assign IPs
and host names to the computers. The problem I am faced with is possibly a
config problem in my dhcp file. The server is not assigning the host names, I
also can't use mac address statements because the PCs are always new. In
other words I want the dhcp to assign an IP on a random basis, if for example
the IP is 192.168.2.1 then make that PCs hostname station1.domainname.
If a PC is unplugged from the network then it must make that IP immediatley
available again.
Here is my dhcpd.conf file could someone please give me a hint:

ddns-update-style ad-hoc;
default-lease-time 30; # 30 seconds
max-lease-time 7200; # 2 hours

option broadcast-address 192.168.2.255;

subnet 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0

Basic IPTables Question
by Aly Dharshi
Hi Folks,
I am new to the world of IPTables and I have rules such as:
iptables -A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED
-j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED
-j LOG --log-prefix "IPTABLES TCP-IN" --log-level 1
Where can I see these logs, I assumed that they would be in /var/log/messages
but nothing shows.
Secondly on this same box that is running this firewall I have a mail server
that just sends mail out, if I try to send a message from the box to the local
smtpd on the box it just sits there, these are all my rules:
-A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p tcp -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j LOG
--log-prefix "IPTABLES TCP-IN" --log-level 1
-A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p udp -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p udp -m state --state ESTABLISHED -j LOG
--log-prefix "IPTABLES UDP-IN" --log-level 1
-A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport
22 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -d 161.184.244.187 -i eth0 -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport
22 -j LOG --log-prefix "IPTABLES SSH-IN" --log-level 1
-A OUTPUT -s 161.184.244.187 -o eth0 -p tcp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j
ACCEPT
-A OUTPUT -s 161.184.244.187 -o eth0 -p tcp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j
LOG --log-prefix "IPTABLES TCP-OUT" --log-level 1
-A OUTPUT -s 161.184.244.187 -o eth0 -p udp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j
ACCEPT
-A OUTPUT -s 161.184.244.187 -o eth0 -p udp -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j
LOG --log-prefix "IPTABLES UDP-OUT" --log-level 1
What am I doing wrong, should I have a rule to allow incoming 25 on tcp, as I
have listed the full hostname in the mail settings.
Cheers,
Aly.

Running Linux on a flash drive
by mjwestkamper
I am working on making Linux (FC2) run on a flash disk.
To avoid the write-cycle limits on the flash it must be configured without a
swap drive and remove any extraneous logging. I have eliminated the swap
partition, however I am not sure what logs are created and how to eliminate
them or direct them to /dev/nul. The objective is not to beat the flash to
death since there is a 1 million write cycle limit.
I am also trying to make the kernel static, w/o modules, to keep the speed
up as the flash is slow. Here my attempts have been less that acceptable. I
constantly get errors on the build and can't seem to eliminate all the
modules.
Finally, to use some sort of sleep mode to avoid the re-boot delay on the
re-application of power. Once developed the system will not ever see any
different configuration. Here I can't find much information on how to do
this.
Any pointers on any of these subjects will be greatly appreciated. If not
already done, I will gladly post a HOW-TO when done.
