Time for the swtich has come.
by Kyle Lagonegro (Student-Lagone37)
I'm finally fed up with Windows and Microsoft in general. I just signed up to this mailing list and am making the first steps to moving over to Linux. From what I have read Fedora is the way to go. So now I must download, but before I make the switch I have some questions:
1) Is it a good idea to do the dual particion so I keep WinXP for a while? Because frankly I want it gone as fast as possible...
2) I'm hooked up to a LAN connection through my college, does Linux come with a web browser like Windows does, because if so I should have no problems with anything, I'm just worried about putting it on and not having the ability to get on for help.
3) I have a bunch of drivers and such that came with the computer, will they work for Linux, or are they only formatted for Windows? The disks don't say windows on them at all, but I'm not sure.
That's it for now, but trust me when I say you will all be hearing from me a lot... Hehe.
One question about this forum, is there a way to stop them from mailing everything to me, I'll just go to the site to check responds and such...

Driver for lexmark X1185 for FC1 & FC3?
by Beartooth
I've just bought a Lexmark X1185, and everything I try to print
from FC3 aborts. I hope eventually to use this printer with FC1 and XP,
but am trying it out on my testbed machine, which will become a LAN server
when I learn how, and is meanwhile trying out FC3.
It would be nice to be able to print from FC3 while I have it,
but it's FC1 and XP that will really matter.
However, I've poked around, on the Web (including especially
linuxprinting) and on the CD that came with the printer, and don't see any
Fedora drivers for it anywhere.
Have I missed something obvious? *Is* there anything? Or am I
going to have to get a different printer?

Motherboard and SATA questions
by Scot L. Harris
I am in the process of collecting the parts for a system that will run
Fedora Core 3. One of the things I am not certain about is using SATA
type drives. Have always used IDE drives or SCSI drives in previous
systems. The motherboard I am looking at is an ASUS P5GD2 Deluxe. I am
planning on using several Maxtor 300GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model
6B300S0 drives as well as Plextor Serial ATA 12X DVD+/-RW Drive, Model
PX-712SA/SW drive.
Three things I have not been able to find out yet, first will this
motherboard support a total of 8 SATA drives?
Second has anyone else used Fedora Core 3 (or 2) with this board
successfully? Plan is to boot from the SATA drive, I don't plan on
having any IDE drives in this box. And I have seen some issues with SATA
drives reported here.
Third, will I be able to boot the system from the Plextor SATA DVD
drive?
I am currently not planning on using any of the raid options with this
system.

Partition help
by Leo Donahue
I need help installing Fedora Core 3 on my laptop.
My goal is to learn Linux enough to stop using windows.
I have win2k on my laptop. PIII ~900MHz. 512MB ram. 20GB hard drive. Currently win2k only has 10001MB of my hard drive. Under windows, there is another primary partition that is unformatted.
I inserted the FC3 cd and rebooted. I got to the point where the Anaconda wizard tries to partion the remaining portion of my hard drive for me. I get an error that says something about not being a primary partition or something. So I use Disk Druid to setup the partitions like the Book I'm using suggests.
I'm reading the text by Sobell, "Practical Guide to Red Hat Linux".
The text suggests the following for partions:
/boot 100 megabytes
/ 500 megabytes
(swap) two times the amount of ram
/home As large as necessary, depends upon # of users
/tmp Minimum 100 megabytes
/usr Minimum 1.7 - 5.5 GB depending what I install
/var Minimum 500 Megabytes
Well you've probably already guessed that the / account is too small, I get an uncaught exception error that says I should have had 2515MB of space for the root partition. There are three choices, if I remember correctly and I chose "OK", which froze the laptop and I hard to do a hard boot to restart the laptop.
I am only installing the default packages to learn what is there before I do a custom install.
Can someone recommend a better partion schema for an approximate 10 GB hard drive?
I would appreciate the list's help.
Thanks.

A KDevelop question.
by Bob Cahn
I've got some code that was thrown over the wall. It consists of 3 .c
files and a .h file. It has some problems and rather than work directly
with gcc I thought I'd try and put it into KDevelop. Now my questions.
1. Is there a better forum for KDevelop than this one?
2. When I create a C project I don't see any facility for adding files
to the project. If the project is named bob then there is a template
file for bob.c but I don't see any way to say that x.c and y.c should be
compiled and linked to bob.c when it builds the bob executable.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Connecting PALM TREO 600
by Vibhu Rishi
Hi,
Has anyone been able to use a Treo600 device with FC ? Is there
something special to be done ? I am trying with Gnome-Pilot, but it is
not able to get the device details.
The sync is with a USB cradle. With hotsync button pressed, i get for
lsusb :
[root@vibhu www]# lsusb
Bus 004 Device 005: ID 082d:0300 Handspring
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
So, I get the device detected. But I think that the issue is with gnome
pilot. Which port do i give ? How do I find which dev the above USB
matches to ?
Vibhu..

RE: Still no sound. I have a Dell Demension 2350 and a Intel82801Soundcard.
by Kyle Lagonegro (Student-Lagone37)
I don't believe it.... it worked!! Thank you so much Curt!
Everyone was talking about things I should mute but then having me type a bunch of stuff up in root. And yet doing what they said (unmute) was the problem all along.
Thank you again.

Kyle, this worked for me - there are 2 settings which have "sense" in
their names and they are new in kernel 2.6.10; mute them and see what
happens. I can post a pointer to a helpful web page at Clemson Univ.
if I can find it.
