Re: problem with network
by João Gomes
Sorry, I was so stressed that don'i even saw what I was writting.
The machine is a HP laptop, centrino.
I'm connecting with cable to a network in a student residence.
It connects directly to the internet.
The network has a DHCP server, and I receive the IP address by DHCP.
Yes, I think it has a router.
In windows everything works fine, but I need the Linux to work.
I tried Fedora and Suse. Both give me the same error. In Mandriva 2005 it
works well, but I don't like mandriva very much.
Thank you for the help.

Printing
by CodeHeads
Hello all,
Got a problem:
I had a networked printer from linux to linux working. The print server
is running FC4 and the laptop was running FC4 also. I redid the laptop
to FC2. and now I am getting errors of "Unable to get printer status
Client-error-forbidden".
What is the path supposed to be for CUPS on the FC2 machine? I have
tried the following:
Server=IP Path=/var/spool/lpo
Server=IP Path=/dev/usb/lp0
Server=IP Path=/var/spool/cups
The printer is a HP OfficeJet 5500 series. What I cannot understand is
I had it working when both machines where running FC4. Could this be a
problem or is it permissions. Yes, the printer is shared. :)
Thanks,
~WILL~

Problem with double-layer dvd+r on fc3 ...
by William W. Austin
I am running fc 3 and am running into a problem I did not have a month
(or so) ago.
About a month ago I burned several (ok 9) double-layer dvd+r disks to
archive some older things that I wanted to clear off the machine. Well
and good, and they still read OK.
However, today I went to do the same thing again (using the same script
calling growisofs) that I used before, but now the program spits the
dvd+r blank out telling me that I want to put, say 6.5 GB on a drive
that only holds 4.whatever.
I am still running the same version of dvd+rw-tools-5.21.4.10.8-2 which
was used when I burned the previous set, although I did install a newer
kernel (2.6.12-1.1381_FC3).
I tried booting to windoze and the drive writes double-layer just fine
there.
Has anybody seen this one? I did a search on the lists and on the web
and if anybody has been talking about it, I must have missed it. Any
suggestions would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Are alsa 1.0.10 packages coming for FC4
by spmirowski
I was wondering if anyone one knows if Alsa rpms are coming for 1.0.10?
I am still using
kernel 2.6.13 because the 1.0.9 packages are incompatible with 2.6.14
kernel for playing DVDs
and such (sound in use by another device or such error).

opening files in /dev
by Bill Costlow
Hi,
Just switched to Core 4 from Mepis (a debian flavor) and everything (so far)
works ok except one thing:
/dev/hda1 is a fat32 (XP) partition
/dev/hda2 is my swap
/dev/hda3 is ext3
opening up /dev/hda1 or /dev/dvd (using konqueror) gives me a dialog box
asking what to associate that file with...associating the file with
konqueror opens another konqueror session and gives me another associations
dialog box.
How do I access my drives?
Bill

Kernel Update
by Gaston Martres
Hi:
Does anybody had trouble with arts in the last kernel update?
I found that the arts engine stop working, as the gstreamer too.
The update was to this version 2.6.14-1.1644_FC4.
Thanks

(Re-)enabling up2date
by Timothe Litt
In a fit of stupidity, I managed to get up2date
unsubscribed from its "channel". (I am unable
to reconstruct exactly how I got here; it involved
thinking that getting a Red Hat Network managemente
account was a good idea; then discovering that
getting it to do anything was a for-fee service.)
I'm running Fedore Core 3; here is what happens:
Launch up2date; enter root password; Get "This is Red
Hat Update Agent, it will assist you to update your
Red Hat Enterprise system with the latest software..."
Click forward
"The system may not be updated until it is associated
with a channel."
How, exactly, do I do that? I've tried to navigate the
config files & google, but get hopelessly lost.
The up2date icon & alert notification tool window tells me
that there are lots of updates to be had. So it would seem
to be a partial misconfiguration...
On a whim, I tried re-installing (as an update!) from DVD;
unsurprsingly, his didn't correct my mistake.
Thanks in advance.

OT: Multi-ISP :- Multi-Wan Broadband Router Appliance VS Multiple eth Linux routing
by Sanjay Arora
Hi all
I need to use three 512 kbps aDSL internet connections, in a load-sharing,
link-failover scenario. Presently I am using Ipcop with a single DSL. Now, I
seem to have two options...one..an Edimax quad wan port adsl router, with
firewalling and NAT and second install a minimal linux distro for
routing...something on the lines of LARTC....and keep NATTING, IDS &
Firewalling on the linux box, so that I can manage IDS/IPS slowly as I learn
to do. However, I presently don't have the skill for a good LARTC multi-ISP
implementation.
Therefore, I am thinking of getting the Edimax router, provided I can keep
the Natting, Firewalling & IDS at the Linux Gateway Server and giving over
the load-sharing & failover function to the Edimax quad port adsl router or
any other equipment suggested by the list (low budget please).
Will I be losing my functionality in firewalling & IDS, if I use such a
product? Or should I use a managed switch (not available less than 8 ports)
and connect three different adsl routers or use a multi-port ethernet card
and connect three different adsl routers...last two seem the same to me, as
I will have to implement some sort of LARTC/iproute2 functionality by hit &
trial and learning, while holding off the implementation.
Can someone please suggest a solution that can decrease the birthing pains
of this project ;-)
Can someone suggest a canned script on LARTC lines or similar that can
provide me load-sharing & link-failover facility, while I learn the subject,
just like IPcop did for Natting, firewalling & IDS, while I learned the
features. Haven't got to traffic-shaping as yet, but have tested a minimal
fedora with own iptables scripts.
Hope that this list will steer me in the right direction, like it always
has.
With best regards.
Sanjay.

Make sure you have updated to the latest kernel. The original FC4
kernel had fairly minimal PCMCIA card support. Try putting the card in
and do a "lspci -v" as root. You should see something like:
04:00.0 Network controller: Intersil Corporation Intersil ISL3890 [Prism
GT/Prism Duette] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Netgear WG511 Wireless Adapter
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 80, IRQ 177
Memory at 52000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 1
somewhere in the spewage along with similar information for every other
device that hangs off of your notebook's PCI bus. Dig around for the
wireless adapter. Then you get to start hunting for a Linux wireless
LAN driver for the card. Google is your friend.
If you can't find a native Linux driver, look into ndiswrapper.
ndiswrapper lets you use the Windoze driver by providing a "wrapper"
module. The livna repository does a good job of keeping the FC4 rpm
current with the latest kernel. If you want to learn more, the project
is hosted on sourceforge.
