There may be an easier way of installing FC3 if you use a driver disk
to get the correct driver at install time. See thread in this list
"Install FC3 (Fedora Core 3) on Dell 4300 w/ SCSI Perc 2/SC" for
similar problem.
Consider posting your motherboard info and the output of the
lspci command.

top posting, HTML posting and "the closer"
by Robert P. J. Day
every time these issues come up on this list, the common defense
among the lazy, inconsiderate, "hey, this is how we do it where *i*
come from" whiners is that, as long as there is no fedora-approved, at
the fedora site itself, official netiquette document, they will feel
free to post however they want.
which raises the immediately obvious question: once that document is
complete and up there, and it *clearly* and *unambiguously* states
that thou shalt not top post, and thou shalt not post in HTML, and
thou shalt trim thine replies, will that shut you up? seriously.
for those of you who work in retail, that question is a variation of
what's known as the "closer". if someone just can't make up their
mind about whether they're going to buy, and they just keep hemming
and hawing, your final strategy is to ask, "what *exactly* will it
take for you to buy?" this puts the burden back on the potential
customer and, if they can't come up with an answer, every good
salesman knows to just cut their losses and walk away.
so, to those folks who make all of our lives on this mailing list
miserable on a regular basis with their cluelessness and lack of
courtesy, here's the "closer": once that netiquette document is
posted *at* fedora.redhat.com, and it *explicitly* forbids top
posting, and HTML, will you finally stop being such jerks?
if the answer's "yes", then that's extra incentive for the doc
writers to *finish* the danged thing and get it up there tout de
suite, to make this finally go away.
if, however, the answer is "no", well, then, we have a problem since
that would mean you've been lying to us all this time, telling us that
you've been doing this just because the rules weren't written down.
but even after they *are*, well, you're going to ignore them, anyway.
i *really* hope it doesn't come to that.
and a final aside to the netiquette doc writers: word those rules
*very* carefully. do not leave them open to interpretation since, as
we've seen, these folks love loopholes and playing semantic word
games. do not, for instance, say that posting in HTML is
"discouraged"; say it's "unacceptable", and point at a longer doc that
explains why. don't use phrases like "it's preferable that ...".
don't leave those kinds of openings. it's just asking for trouble.

RE: Megaraid Driver IBM Blade Server
by Mike McGrath
How do I do the FC3 install with a newer kernel than what is on the FC3
Install CD? The only way I know how to add drivers during the install
is to run it with linux dd at the boot prompt.

Mike, I don't know the first thing about Megaraid or compiling kernels.
On the other hand I know that the kernel distributed on the FC3 install
CD is pretty out of date relative to the latest update version which is
something like 2.6.10-1.770 or 771. Wouldn't you want to upgrade the
kernels and libraries to the latest stable versions before compiling?

Megaraid Driver IBM Blade Server
by Mike McGrath
Hey guys, I'm trying to get a Megaraid driver for an HS20 series Blade
server. I'm working with FC3 and it doesn't have native support for the
driver, I've tried other drivers and I just get a panic. I'd imagine
it's a conflict with the version of the kernal that the driver was
compiled against. I'm going to try to compile it against the
2.6.9-1.667 kernel which I believe is what version the FC3 install CD is
using. Anyone have any pointers / pitfalls I should know about? Or
better yet, anyone have a working megaraid driver for FC3 on an HS20
blade server?

I've heard about the recent problems on this list and I've decided to
use my status as the founder of Linux to step in and settle matter of
how to post to the list and put the matter to rest.
Rule #1 Posting content format
All posts to the list from this point forward must be set to have a
fixed display width of 4,317 inches (or the metric equivalent, 6
millimeters).
The background color must be set to black and the font color must be
set to 0XFFFFFF.
After composing your message to the above standards, preferable using
either version three of Microsoft Word, (WINE, VMware may help here)
or any version of Star-Writer, take a screen shot of your message and
convert the resulting graphic to gif format and then to "bmp" format.
Rule #2 Character set selection for all postings:
All email shall be posted in utf-8 for Sanskrit (utfskt)
see:
http://www.indologie.uni-halle.de/software/utf.htm
"Typesetting Sanskrit Texts with OmegaTeX"
Rule #3 Quoting rules
All quoted text must be formatted in the Classic Sideways Diagonal All
Caps format. Aka "CSDACF".
If you cannot persuade your system to produce CSDACF then you must use
the "Colonial Reversed Aromatics Pulsed Standard" - aka "CRAPS".
The CRAPS standard requires that all inform nation be completely
reversed both in format and synchronicity.
For example the above sentence would be presented as :
.yticinorhcnys dna tamrof ni htob desrever yletelpmoc eb noitan mrofni
lla taht seriuqer dradnats SPARC ehT
To conform to the synchonicity requirement use the table below to
determine how to respond to all postings to the list from here after:
Topics posted on: | may be responded to on:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
3/31/05 4/1/05
3/30/05 4/2/05
3/29/05 4/3/05
. .

etc etc
Please enjoy the convenience and ease of these new posting rules.

Apparently my sarcasm was a little too subtle for you though.

Up2date problem
by Scott Carper
After I successfully run up2date, the next time I check for updates, it says
there are updates available (and these are not the same as the previous
update); but when I launch up2date, it says "Your system is fully updated.
No new packages are needed." I have to reboot the system before the
available updates will be downloaded and installed by up2date.
Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

updates & time
by Raghavendra Moktali
hello,
i have just installed fc3 on an thinkpad r51 and a desktop machine.
the version is 2.6.9-1.667, from dvd
During the installations, i have selected everything to be installed.
Please let me your experience of the following. this is my first install
and upgrade.
a. how long this might take on the thinkpad with the folloing spec.
centrino 1.5Ghz,768mb pc2700 ram, via a network with download speed
of about 45kbps using up2date or yum. i have to plan for the
required time at a cafe or some other place as i am on dialup.
b. is it possible to just download the updates to a folder and use them
to update all machines and if so how? this would make more sense in case
of multiple machines.
thank you for your time

Although the rest of this seems reasonable (for an arbitrarily large
value of reasonable), I think someone needs to review his imperial
to metric conversions. 4,317 inches (or 4.317 as we would say here
in the good ol' USA) is closer to 10.97 cm.
Hey, wait a minute, if Linus really wrote that, he would have spelled
millimeters as millimetres. Is this a joke? ;)
