x86-64 or dual MP
by Jon Shorie
We are upgrading one of our servers this year that is used to run perl apps in
apache and mysql databases. I am looking at two different options that all
cost about the same money. They all have 1GB ECC Ram and dual 80 GB hard
drives.
The only real differences are the cpus.
One has Dual Athlon MP 2200's
The other has a single Socket 754 Athlon 64 3700+
Which should give me better performance if I am running Fedora Core 3 on the
box?

Personally, when dealing with very active lists and following the
thread, top posting is a time saver. I think this falls into the realm
of personal preference, some people like it, some not....

no energy module for kcmshell in FC3
by raray@jam.rr.com
When I upgraded from FC2 to FC3 I noticed my monitor would no longer
change to power save mode. I see that under FC2 this is done in kcontrol
by the energy module . Under FC3 when I run "kcmshell --list" there is no
energy module. Has this changed to a different module?
Thanks

by Claude Jones
The following error appears while running xdosemu, a program that was
functioning perfectly before the latest Xorg patch:
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXxf86vm.so.1: undefined symbol: XextFindDisplay
Is this a problem with Xorg?

device icons on the desktop
by Manojav Sridhar
hello,
i recently upgraded to Kde 3.4 w/ hal/dbus support. my question is that
when i plug in certain devices i get a device icon on my desktop like my
Sony digital (usb) camera. but when i plug in my Rio Forge. it doesn't
create an icon for me. i am guessing the Rio device has not been setup
to show the icon.
where is the file the describes what devices popup on my desktop and
which ones dont.
both of them mount properly in /media/FORGE and /media/usbdisk (for the
camera). i have posted this on the kde list as well.
thanks

Hi folks.
Subject says it all. What the best way to set this up so that the VPN's
transparent.

HAL broken after upgrade to FC3
by Muyiwa Taiwo
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.10-1.770_FC3 a couple of weeks ago from
2.6.9-1.667, and also upgraded HAL to 0.4.7-1.FC3. Since then, HAL has
stopped working. On system start, it shows that it starts normally, but
it actually dies silently (as revealed by "service haldaemon status",
which shows that hald is stopped). The effect of this is that my USB
drives (hard disks, floppy, memory disk, camera, etc., are no longer
automatically mounted when they're plugged in. I can mount them
manually, but that means that I've got to go to System Logs to find out
what they're called.
I've tried re-installing HAL 0.4.0-10, but this didn't help. I've also
downloaded and run the latest initscripts, still no show. I've searched
numerous mailing lists, but there doesn't seem to be a fix. Am I
looking in the wrong places?
My configuration is:
- Toshiba TE2000 laptop
- udev-039-10.FC3.7
- hotplug-2004_04_01-8.1
- hal-0.4.7-1.FC3
- kernel: 2.6.10-1.770.FC3
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
