Rdesktop link to Windows XP Home Edition ?
by Timothy Murphy
Has anyone successfully used rdesktop to link to
a machine running Windows XP Home Edition?
As far as I can see, Windows XP Home Edition
does not support Telnet server or Remote Desktop
(as Windows XP Pro does).
It does support "Remote Assistance",
and I see from the archive for this list
that some claim one could use this
to login to a Windows machine from a Linux box.
Unfortunately none of the postings I have seen
explains how this is done.
Has anyone actually linked Linux to WinXP Home in this way?

.gtkrc problems
by Peter Magnusson
GTK doesnt seem to have any good way of how to handle themes. I have these
.gtkrc files:
[iocc@flashdance iocc]$ ll .gtkrc*
-rw-r--r-- 1 iocc 218 Dec 4 2004 .gtkrc
-rw-rw-r-- 1 iocc 133 Dec 7 2004 .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2
-rw-r--r-- 1 iocc 247 Dec 4 2004 .gtkrc-2.0
[iocc@flashdance iocc]$ cat .gtkrc
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
#include "/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk/gtkrc"
#include "/usr/share/themes/Crux/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
include "/usr/share/themes/Glider/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
[iocc@flashdance iocc]$ cat .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2
# Autowritten by gnome-settings-daemon. Do not edit
include "/usr/share/themes/Raleigh/gtk/gtkrc"
include "/home/iocc/.gtkrc.mine"
[iocc@flashdance iocc]$ cat .gtkrc-2.0
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
#include "/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk/gtkrc"
#include "/usr/share/themes/Crux/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
include "/usr/share/themes/Glider/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs"
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN DO NOT EDIT
....................
.gtkrc-2.0 did I create myself because i cant use xchat without emacs
bindings. .gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 is probably autocreated by something, dunno.
.gtkrc is mostly used I guess. Problem is... Some gtk programs says that
its broken:
[iocc@flashdance iocc]$ xmms
/usr/share/themes/Glider/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:11: error: unexpected identifier
`GtkWidget', expected character `}'
for example. I have had this for like 8 months now. I wonder how it can be
fixed? Glider was included in FC3 that is running on this box. I havent
modified Glider/gtk-2.0/gtkrc. I get no themes in xmms ofcourse.
An other note, the themes included in FC3 is very similar. They dont differ
much at all. Wouldnt it be better to include themes that most people would
like to have (like MacOS X style Aqua for example?) and maybe a bit more,
maybe in FC5? It doesnt take much space.
Personally I think they are quite ugly the one that are included by
default. Is there anywhere to download new themes? It doesnt matter that
much how it looks, its fine as long that they doesnt annoy me. Like
GIGANTIC font, bizarr colors or so...

Quikcam 4000 not working / yum / apt-get sources
by Jason (spot) Brower
in FC3 my webcam worked, quickcam 4000 pro but in the new release FC4 it
doesn't work. Is there a solution? and is there a program for yum that works
like synaptic? If not, is there a way for e to get the source installed
under apt-get so I can use synaptic to install software?

Keyboard keycodes
by Mike Chambers
I have an MS wireless desktop (keyboard and mouse are wireless), that in
which I have an "F Lock" button that I have to push for my F1-F12
buttons to work, or if I don't, those same buttons use email commands,
such as reply, open, clearn, etc.. I am seeing in my logs all the time
to set a key code, which is I guess this button (or it's my numLock
button), but I don't know which keycode to use.
Jul 30 23:59:09 scrappy kernel: atkbd.c: Unknown key pressed (translated
set 2, code 0xd9 on isa0060/serio0).
Jul 30 23:59:09 scrappy kernel: atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e059 <keycode>' to make it known.
How do I know which keycode to use?

Setting up Radius
by John Aldrich
How hard is it to set up and administer RADIUS? At work, we're looking at
offering dial-up access and while I've run it before, I haven't actually *set
it up* before...
Thanks

Error launching gnome apps as root: "Failed to contact configuration server"
by Colin Brace
I am getting an error message launching gnome programs as root or
launching programs which require root access, such as the hardware browser:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration
information for gnome-network-preferences. Some of your
configuration settings may not work properly.
A second dialog box gives additional information:
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes
are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have
stale NFS locks due to a system crash.
See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information.
(Details - 1: IOR file '/tmp/gconfd-root/lock/ior' not opened
successfully,
no gconfd located: Input/output error 2: IOR file
'/tmp/gconfd-root/lock/ior'
not opened successfully, no gconfd located: Input/output error)
I took a look at the gnome.org page, but didn't find a clear answer.
Likewise, Google didn't return any helpful any information. The problem
developed after I used the Fedora installer upgrade my system from Core
2 to Core 4. Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Thanks.

What kind of CDROM are you using, at what point does the boot fail?
Have you tried a different CD (Perhaps the one you have is corrupt?)

eggcups -what does it do.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
At irregular time on my FC4 machine eggcups just crashes. You get a
message window which allows you to file a bugzilla but not a very
useful one since the program is just crashing without my knowing
just what I was doing to make it crash except I was configuring a
printer.
Now one guesses eggcups is related to cups but what exactly does it
do?
