Re: I think I need a sound/ALSA guru.
by Bill Case
Hi;
I have posted here a couple of times with sound problems and received no
reply. I may be wrong but I think my sound problems are basically
installation problems and I also think they are 2 or 3 different
problems intermixed. I have been working on this problem for over 6
weeks and don't seem to be any closer to a solution than when I started.
My problems are:
1) My event sounds all have scratchy or hissy backgrounds
2) My /dev/*(sound) permissions seem all screwed up
3) All the modules seem to be there (except one for synthesizer?? --
which is required in WindowsXP)
4) Most but not all of my sound programs can't find my sound card.
5) tvtime switches to 'line-in' even though it is set for PCM.
6) system-config-soundcard plays the test sample but has the worst
distortion of all.
7) and more and more .....
I have googled, checked the ALSA site, checked all the Fedora (including
bugzilla) and Linux sites I can find. I have noticed several posted
ALSA problems similar to mine but seldom any posted solutions.
I have reams of data from lsmode, /dev/*, /proc/, PAM, /boot/config-2.6
etc. that I will share if anyone thinks they can help.
I am using P4 on a Intel 82850 motherboard, Ensoniq 5889 AudioPCI sound
card using the snd_ens1371 driver and an ATI TV Wonder tuner. Also
listed is Brooktree Bt878 video capture and Bt878 audio capture. My
Linux is Fedora Core 4.
I have sound -- sorta -- but my frustration level is climbing daily.
I can't figure out if I am doing something so stupid that no one can
bother replying, or because no one else knows what I am talking about or
because I am asking in the wrong place? A reply to this last question
alone would be a big help
Regards Bill

FC installation doesn't work
by Juan
Thank you very much for your answers gentlemen.
The problem was solved changing the video card.
Scott's e-mail arrived just a tad late when I had already formatted the hd.
I believe that that is the answer. The video card I had was a Trident.
Thanks again.

After removing the mozilla.i386 package a plain "yum update" updated the
complete system. I did not reinstall mozilla.i386 since I do not see why
I should neet it. Maybe some program will complain about that but I can
reinstall it later. "yum install libtool" also succeeded.
Thanks for going through all the effort to solve my problem!

Your root filesystem (/) is full. 4.8GB isn't really much...

Re: [ILUG-BOM] 2 hard disks and formatting
by िऩऩाद
Hi
Thanks for the replies.
I also ran knoppix 3.8.1 on my Pc. From Knoppix i ran Qt parted and it
showed all the partitions on D2(hdb)
Also I could access the files from knoppix. I tried fdisk and cfdisk from
Knoppix console and all showed me the partitions on hdb and the size as 40gb
Earlier when I tried to access hdb(D2) from Slack 10.1 by running cfdisk it
gave a fatal error.
Why is this difference in the 3 programs
Thanks and Regards

1. I have Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp) installed from scratch.
2. I have QLogic HBA QLA2340 (new BIOS installed)

It's funny - but then I try to install Win2k (only for test!!!) it seems to work.
It found all LUNs - so configurations of Hitachi and HBA are correct.

postfix dying while sending mails to outside world on FC3
by Ankush Grover
hey friends,
I don't know what happened the postfix has stopped sending mails to
outside world but I am able to receive the mails from outside world
.The postfix is able to send the mails within the Lan but not to the
outside world.
yestarday i did make some changes to my server I am using FC3 like
disabling root access on every terminal as there were some attempts to
hack the computer so I thought disabling root access on every terminal
will make hacking little difficult.
I also did chattr +i /etc/services .
But today I remove the chattr on /etc/services.
The error while sending mails to outside world :
Aug 2 10:34:41 mail postfix/smtp[4598]: fatal: unknown service: smtp/tcp

I am using the latest kernel and my system is upto date through yum.I
am not using any 3rd party utility for scanning mails like MailScanner

USB Printer and Firefox
by Frank Chen
We have an HP LaserJet 1010 printer with USB
connection. There are two issues using it with FC4.
1) After plug in the USB cable, it takes some time for
FC4 to recognize the printer. Is there a way to speed
up this process by using a command?
2) We have to restart FC4 after plug in the printer in
order to print from Firefox. Is there a way to avoid
rebooting the PC?
