XINE failed after amaroK installed.
by Terry Snyder
After I installed amaroK from yum my Xine DVD player locks up. At
first it seemed to only lock up when amaroK was running as an icon no
sound was playing. After the last round of Fedora Core 4 updates I
can't seem to get Xine to work at all.
I have removed the cvs RPMs that I had downloaded and installed new
Xine RPMs from freshrpms.net today. I still have no working Xine
player.
mplayer seems to work fine, but I am only using the command line
version of mplayer. Sometimes RealPlayer 10 will work and sometimes
this seemed to start when I installed amaroK.
I installed amaroK because Rythmbox stopped working correctly when I
upgraded from FC3 to FC4.
Thanks for the help.

Apache 2 SSL and Fedora 4
by mjohnson@deltains.net
In my efforts to learn more about Linux I am trying to set apache to
serve ssl
pages. When I visit my https pages it displays the dummy cert that is
installed by default. I have read several sites but most of the
information there seems to be based on Core 1,2,3 and it seems alot has
changed in this respect to Core 4.
Could any one point me in the right direction?

Prelink eating all my resources
by Dotan Cohen
Hi list,
Once again my FC4 box (Duron 1200mHz, 512 ram) has crawled to a halt.
I quickly top'ed and found a process prelink that varied between
74%-98% CPU usage.
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
5202 root 39 19 11724 9280 536 R 89.9 1.9 0:23.59 prelink
So I googled for prelink and now know that it helps preload libraries
so that progreams can start faster. Which is senseable because the
machine started slowing down when I clicked 'manage bookmarks' in
firefox, which opens another program. My question is, what can I do to
prevent this from happening again? Do I have to ust cross my fingers
every time I open a new program?
Could this be related to the fact that I have no swap partition? I
know that I should probably add one, I guess that I've just been too
lazy to learn how. Will adding a swap partition make the machine less
sluggish? For this 512 ram machine, I was thinking of adding a 2 gig
swap partition.

printserver problems
by akonstam@trinity.edu
I am trying to have a series of machines to print to our HP Laserjets
through a print-server. They are a 4050N, 4000, 5M, 1100 and a Color
Laserjet 3500.
They all print from the server which is running FC3. All but the 3500
have been configured using system-config-printer. The 3500 for which
we had to install HLIP was configured using the CUPS web interface.
On the print client I am batting 2 for 5. I can print to the 4050N and
the 5M but not to the 4000, 1100 or the 3500. In each case I used
system-config-printer to configure the printing. The print clients are
FC4 machines.
One question immediately is whether on the client should the printers
be configured as just postscript or using their actual printer types
(400, 1100, etc)?
Any advice would be accepted and appreciated.

Re: malloc and 'Active' memory
by Deron Meranda
> A task that has been running for some time may (will!) have fragemented

> if a shared library has been set to load at a poorly chosen fixed address).
This type of fragmentation is not caused by malloc. It is most typically
the result of the dynamic library loader, which does not use malloc,
but instead uses mmap directly. Usually once the program has been
fully loaded and initialized this memory will not change as the program
continues to run, and likewise will be released (to that process) when it
terminates.
However your observation is correct that a fixed-address library may
subdivide the available virtual memory address into smaller regions.
If you're latter trying to malloc a very large segment that's close
the the virtual memory size (depends on 32 or 64 bit), then you can
run into problems.
You can get a hint as to where a process is using memory by
looking at /proc/12345/maps (where 12345 is the process id of your
mysqld process). It should be easy to see if a library is responsible
for splitting your memory into too-small chunks. Also the file
/proc/12345/status might have useful information.
Check out the man page for ld.so(8), as there are environment
variables you can set to get debugging information out of the
process loading stage.
Also, if you've disabled your overcommit per above, then make sure
you have enough paging/swapping space available or that can
also cause memory allocations to fail. It should be at least as large
as the amount of physical memory. cat /proc/swaps
Although I don't think mysql uses it, SystemV style shared memory
is not usually released when a program terminates, until it's
released manually. Run "ipcs -a" as root to see what's there.
> When a task exits, all its (non-shared) memory is returned to the OS.
> Shared memory is returned to the OS when the last sharing task exits.
Except for SystemV style shared memory which is not released.
Also, when memory that once held shared libraries is freed, it is
made available for re-use, but it's not immediately flushed, under
the anticipation that the same library will be reloaded soon.
Note that under some other OSs, like AIX, shared libraries once
loaded tend to stay in memory and it's resources unavailable to
other things. Linux is more forgiving.

problem with clamav 0.86.2-3 on fc3
by Ankush Grover
hey friends,
Today I downloaded clamav rpms from
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/3/i386/
clamav-0.86.2-3.fc3.i386.rpm
clamav-data-0.86.2-3.fc3.i386.rpm
clamav-lib-0.86.2-3.fc3.i386.rpm
clamav-milter-1.86.2-3.fc3.i386.rpm
clamav-server-0.86.2-3.fc3.i386.rpm
clamav-update-0.86.2-3.fc3.i386.rpm
there was no problem in installing them ,but when I try to start the
clamav-milter service it gave me the error. The error is below
Starting clamav-milter: /usr/sbin/clamav-milter: --timeout must not be
given if --external is not given
[FAILED]
I don't know the solution for this problem.
Moreover what is the use of clamd-wrapper service ,when I tried to
start it the system says
service clamd-wrapper start
clamd-wrapper: unrecognized service
Earlier I removed the word "example" from /etc/clamd.d/milter.conf.
There is no clamd.conf file in the /etc/.
Thanks & Regards

if you've installed mod_ssl and go to the site and get a warning about
the dummy cert and then the pages come up it sounds like everything is
working fine. What is it you are concerned about?

FC4 can't boot after updates
by Claude Jones
A friend has just been possibly bit by the bug that emerged after a recent
kernel update. I read Thomas Chung's piece in the recent FedoraNews about
this, but he stresses that the workaround of running Kudzu to fix
modprobe.conf has to occur BEFORE the kernel update. Has anyone been able to
fix a system after the fact?
