FC4 XKB config problem
by Ralph Jones
I've encountered this problem after my upgrade from FC3 to FC4:
Gnome gives the following error box on login:
************BEGIN DIALOG BOX
Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation
X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
60802000
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of <b>xprop -root | grep XKB</b>
- The result of <b>gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd</b>
************END DIALOG BOX
xprop produces:
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "us", "", ""
gconftool-2 produces NO output.
yum update produces this:

The system seems normal in other respects, including the keyboard; the only
problem indications are the error box that appears on every login, and the
error message in yum. Advice? Thanks...

Nvidia 76.76 and FC4 64bit 2.6.12 398
by "Cédric MARCOUX (sprimont)"
Hi all!
I'm currently losing my hair!
I was using FC4 32Bit and Nvidia Driver 76.76 very nicely. Using the
last kernel 2.6.12 (398)
Today, I have decided to install on my computer a Intel Pentium 4 with
64bits instructions (EMT64)
In this way, I have reinstall FC4 64Bi.
I have done the same update as my old 32Bit version (kernel 398, gcc,
aso...)
I have install on the same way the Nvidia Driver 76.76, modify my
xorg.conf as well.
Now, X does not start and computer completly hang when starting Gnome.
I have try livna driver => same problem
I have try selinux=0 on startup => same problem
So I wonder if someone have the same problem and if there is any
solutions/trick?
My configuration is:
P4 3Ghz EMT64
Motherboard ASUS P5P800 Bios 1011
VGA ASUS GForce 6800
FC4 64bit with last yum -y update completly finished
I think if there is no solution that i will come back to 32bit
Thanks for your help.

Need help to get mod_perl working
by Clive Anderson
I runing Fedora Core 3 and I cannot get mod_perl to
work.
rpm -q mod_perl returns
mod_perl-1.99_16-3
rpm -q httpd returns
htthttpd-2.0.52-3.1
So both Apache and mod_perl are installed. The
httpd.conf file includes the conf file for mod_perl so
the LoadModule per_module modules/mod_perl.so setup is
O.K.
when I check if mod_perl is running with
lynx -head -dump http://localhost I get:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 29 Aug 2005 04:17:18 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.52 (Fedora)
Last-Modified: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 22:47:45 GMT
ETag: "3a9733-d2e-bf7d8640"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 3374
Connection: close
Which does not show mod_perl running.
What do I need to do get this to work?

I am running it on localhost and I am able to see the communication

Best Update Method
by CHAT KHODA
Hi Friends,
I am just trying to update a WEB server but I face a
problem , seems general!
Normally when you try to use YUM (We are using Core2),
you will receive a very old offer of update from
RedHat web site and when we try to install RPMs for
other Cores , we receive many dependecy errors.(For
instant the best offer of YUM for FC2 trying to update
Apache is 2.0.51 and MySQL 3... ! .
We receive other error messages when we try to use
sources of these programs.
So what is thebest solution to keep these packages as
up to date as possible?
No need to say that we can not upgrade to Core4
easily.

have to email back with some questions on their post, but I thought others
on the mailing list might have some opinions on this issue also.
Here's my original message from the forum. I look forward to some good
discussion on this.
==========================================
I'm about to reuse some old hardware to create a sizable RAID storage server
at home to get all the data I care about in one place and protected. The
hardware I'm going to use is an old P3 500MHz system I have which has an
A-Bit BE6 motherboard and 256 MB of RAM in it. If I don't have to replace
the motherboard that would be great, but if I must, I must.
I'm planning on running FC3 or FC4 on this box using two 40GB IDE drives
which will be software RAID1. Also, I will be upgrading the RAM to 512MB.
I will be purchasing 5 300GB Seagate SATA hard disks
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148064) to be
housed in an AIC 5 bay hot swap disk chassis
(http://www.excaliberpc.com/AIC_AC_5SATA_BR-SS35_HOT-SWAP_/partinfo-id-55412
6.html). Please keep in mind the picture shown is in the wrong position.
The chassis is positioned so that the drives are seated vertically in the
case. I'll also be sliding a fan under the chassis in the 5.25" slot for
additional cooling of the drives, and another fan to draw in air at the
bottom front of the computer case. (The one reply I received in the forums
stated that I would have better luck with these Western Digital drives
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144394). Any
thoughts on this drive versus the Seagate drives. I was going to go with
Seagate since I've been having good luck with them and they offer a 5 year
warranty as opposed to the 3 years that Western Digital offers.
I'd also like some recommendations on a good SATA RAID controller to use
here. I was going to use the 3ware 9500S 8 port controller, but it's PCI64
and I don't think the A-Bit motherboard supports that, but if I have to get
a new Motherboard, then so be it. Can someone recommend a good SATA RAID
controller that supports RAID 0/1/10/5/JBOD and has full, on the fly, hot
swap drive support?
I also know that I'm going to need a new power supply to handle 7 disk
drives, so I'll be replacing the 200W unit with 400W one. Will this fry my
motherboard at all, or does it not matter? (The one reply to my post
recommended this Thermaltake 480W unit -->
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153007)
I'm interested in people's thoughts on the scheme as a whole and thoughts on
the SATA controller card. If you've actually done something like this, I'm
very interested in your thoughts and comments on your experience the specs
of what you did. Hey, I'm interested in any thoughts on this at all.
Comments on the components I'm planning on using, alternatives you might
think are better, anything. The only components I'm really stuck on are the
drives as the Seagate SATA drives are pretty quiet. I will be keeping the
server in an unoccupied room, but I don't want to build a jet engine that I
can hear thoughout the house either.
Thanks,
Paul C.

burn DVDR faster than 1.30x
by Peter Magnusson
I cant burn DVDR's faster than 1.30x or something like that. cdrecord says:
cdrecord: DMA speed too slow (OK for 9x). Cannot write at speed 16x.
hdparm says:
/dev/cdwriter:
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 16 (on)
I dont understand why it is like this. DMA, 32-bit is on. Its using a
Promise TX2 UDMA/133 card. Should be enough. LG GSA-4120B is the burner
model.

The burner is on hde. I use FC4 (2.6.10-1.770_FC3smp).
Anyone got a idea?

recompile php-mysql
by Eric Wagar
I see that there is source for php4, which I would assume would be all
of php, including the mysql so.
Since the mysql portion is broken up and provided as php-mysql in Fedora
releases, how do I go about recompiling the php-mysql for use with MySQL
4/4.1? The one included < FC4 is compiled for MySQL 3.23. I use MySQL
4.1, so I need an updated php-mysql to properly work with the DB.
Thanks
