FC4 Ready for primt time?

Hi, I have been running FC3 for a long time and really haven't had any issues, but when setting up FC4 from scratch or upgrading an FC3 to FC4 system I am running into all kinds of problems and issues. The firs thing I see is that running basic bash scripts takes forever, and after rebooting the system performance is overall crawling. Eventually it seems to finish whatever it is doing and get around to it, but it's not something I want to run under with these types of issues. Additionally certain services seem to not run automatically even though they are set to ( verified with chkconfig ). I want to upgrade our servers and impliment new servers under FC4, however if it's not ready for prime time, I will have to continue with FC3. Can anyone elaborate? Thanks! Joey

hi... i might be getting 5-10 dell/ibm 1u rack servers (poweredge/eservers) but i wouldn't need them right now, and was think about renting/leasing them for a few months until i need them for my project. the boxes range from 2-3GHZ, 512M-1G ram, with different HD. No OS if that matters. any thoughts as to what a reasonable/good price would be? (i'm in cali if that matters) thanks bruce

how smart will wireless be in FC5?

Does anyone know if the following will be possible in FC5? I am interested in being able to set up a portable Linux box such that if the ethernet interface is available the internet access will be used through eth0 otherwise the wireless interface will be used. Currently in Fedora Core 4, it seems that I am stuck with either automatically enabling both interfaces at startup or manually starting one or the other. What I am trying to avoid is having both interfaces in use if the ethernet interface comes up at startup. Thanks in advance for any information. Jack

selinux again, and x forwarding

I just solved one selinux problem only to find another. The old problem: httpd wouldn't serve up userdir files after upgrading to FC 4 with selinux. Changing the httpd config and the context of the user directories didn't help. The solution, provided here, was to relabel. The new problem: X forwarding no longer works. This machine is not tied into our system's NIS system, never has been, but X forwarding always worked before. I don't know if the problem could be there. The ssh and X configs are the default for FC 4. The machines I'm connecting to are mostly RH machines -- like v 3.x. The message I get on the terminal is about not being able to open the display. I've tried ssh -X and ssh -Y. And ForwardX11Trusted is set, but ForwardX11 is not, both in /etc/ssh/ssh_config One complication: prior to rebooting, I upgraded the system. This was on Monday, so it included the kernel upgrade. Slow page rendering with Firefox

The firefox on my fully updated Fedora Core 4 box renders many larger pages very slowly. During the page rendering, Firefox "hangs" completely. A good test page is: http://scragz.com/tech/mozilla/test-rendering-time.php Rendering the scragz page, and others, on the same hardware and OS, various other browsers are over 4 times faster, including Firefox for windows: Linux Firefox 1.06 42.23 Linux Konqueror 3.4.2-0.fc4.1 13.27 Linux Opera 8.02 build 1272 7.08 Windows (via VMWare) Firefox 1.06 8.18 Windows (via VMWare) IE 6 7.12 All of the above times are without any extensions *or* plugins installed (in fact, with Greasemonkey installed, Linux Firefox took over 100 seconds to render). Lots of memory is available if cache is included. Not much disk activity is happening, but the CPU is getting hammered. This was also tested using a completely new profile (no ~/.mozilla directory present), with the same result. Can anyone else duplicate these results? Implementing networked /home

Hello, I have several linux (FC and Redhat) workstations. I am thinking of implementing a centralized /home for this workstations,using NFS. Authentication is done using NIS. I have several questions about how to implement this, and what's the best way. Here are the options I'm considering: 1. On the server: export /home. On the clients: mount /home. I know how to do this. This should be the simplest. 2. On the server, export /home/user1, /home/user2, etc, thus for each user there is a "export line" for that user home directory. On the clients: mount /home/username whenever username login to that workstation. What is the advantages or disadvantages of (1) and (2) ? I have seen (2) being used on some network (that I don't administer), so I am wondering if this is the usual best practice. Furthermore I'm not sure I know how to do (2). Is there a PAM module that do this ? I have also read that a lot of mount points can put heavy load on the server, so I am not sure if (2) is better. Any suggestions, or pointers is greatly appreciated. Thanks. RDB

It seems mplayer doesn't use 3d-hardware...

I'm in dout if my mplayer*pre7 uses 3d-harware. Is there a way how to check/fix it? I made it out of src.rpm. I tried to turn on gl and gl2 - it blinks! Currently i use xv, xvidix - refuses to work at all. I have ATI9250Sapphire128Mb video card. -- Best regards, Strong.
