Forthcoming FC4 kernel update, more testing required.
by Dave Jones
I've completed a 2.6.13 kernel rebase, and pushed out a
test kernel to fc4-updates-testing. (FC3 probably won't
get another rebase before EOL).
Please give this a try on your systems, and file any
bugs that you happen upon in bugzilla.
You can also find interim 'snapshot' builds at
http://people.redhat.com/davej/kernels/Fedora/FC4/
which may fix additional problems since the last updates-testing
release.
I'm hoping to get this pushed out fairly soon depending upon
the feedback I get from how well this kernel works out.
Thanks,
Dave

non-ASCII error messages from gcc
by Berna Massingill
On FC2 (and earlier RedHat) systems, error messages from gcc seem
to have been straight ASCII. On a couple of FC4 systems, output
includes some non-ASCII characters; specifically, the characters
used for single quotes (previous ` and ') have been replaced by
something multi-byte. (I base this claim on redirecting stderr
into a file and then displaying file contents with "od -c".)
The sequence that replaces ' displays okay, but the sequence that
replaces ` does not (appears as boldface u with umlaut).
My guess is that there's an environment variable somewhere that's
not getting set quite right; the man page for gcc seems to be
indicating that what gets produced for error messages is controlled
by environment variables LANG and LC_MESSAGES. LC_MESSAGES is unset;
LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8.
Anyone know how to make the error messages display properly?

gphoto2 made out of src.rpm does not supports usb...
by Strong
I had gphoto2-2.1.5 that worked fine on my FC4. Now I wanted to upgrade
and optimize it to 2.1.6. It compiled well, but when new rpm has been
installed (-2.1.6.i686.rpm) it refuses to work with usb port. Run with
--debug option says,
0.001153 main(2): gphoto2 has been compiled with the following options:
0.001562 main(2): + gcc (C compiler used)
0.001968 main(2): + popt (for handling command-line parameters)
0.002380 main(2): + no exif (for displaying EXIF information)

0.003208 main(2): + no aa (for displaying live previews)
0.003597 main(2): + no jpeg (for displaying live previews in JPEG
format)
0.004068 main(2): + no readline (for easy navigation in the shell)
0.004481 main(2): libgphoto2 2.1.6
0.004944 main(2): libgphoto2 has been compiled with the following
options:
0.005374 main(2): + gcc (C compiler used)
0.005776 main(2): + no EXIF (for special handling of EXIF files)
0.006193 main(2): + no ltdl (working around buggy libltdl, eh? :-)
0.006590 main(2): + /proc/meminfo (adapts cache size to memory
available)
0.007040 main(2): libgphoto2_port 0.5.1
0.007442 main(2): libgphoto2_port has been compiled with the following
options:
0.007975 main(2): + gcc (C compiler used)
0.008360 main(2): + no USB (for USB cameras)
0.009034 main(2): + serial (for serial cameras)
0.009428 main(2): + no resmgr (serial port access and locking)
0.009844 main(2): + no baudboy (serial port locking)
0.010247 main(2): + no ttylock (serial port locking)
0.010658 main(2): + no lockdev (serial port locking)
0.011068 main(2): + no ltdl (working around buggy libltdl, eh? :-)
So I suppose that I compiled without usb support. I looked at configure
--help, but there is even no mention of usb! What should I do to compile
it the right way?
Thank You.

iptables
by Lovell Mcilwain
Hello all,
Can anyone recommended a good iptables tutorial or a GUI that I can use
to configure my iptables?
My linux box is getting slammed from hackers trying to get in and I
would like to start doing some preventative measures.
Thanks

EPIA mini-itx MII video challenges
by tom
Some time ago I obtained an EPIA mini-itx motherboard to fool with. With
FC2,3,4 I've been able to get networking, sound, and desktop running
without trouble, but getting the hardware support for the MPEG-2
acceleration, or the alledged 3-D hardware support - forget it. Google and
various archives may be friendly, but I'm not succeeding.
My latest effort, I dropped back to a fresh install of FC4, and updated
the kernel w/ yum to 2.6.13-1.1526_FC4, and xorg-x11 to
6.8.99.900-0.FC4.ucr.3 (those two packages happened to show up, I didn't
set out to specify them) Attempting to fire up X results in a flicker of
the screen, followed by black. <ctrl><alt><F1> allows me to <ctrl>c, and
regain the screen. This happens both as a normal user and root>
Looking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log the only entry that looks like an error is:
AUDIT: Fri SEp 30 18:27:56 2005:3196 x: client 7 rejected from local host
I will assume that means something to somebody, but its gibberish to me.
I can post xorg.conf & what ever is desired, but I'd really like to get
this machine working at it's fullest.
Thanks in advance
