Hello all, Can anyone recommended a good iptables tutorial or a GUI that I can use to configure my iptables? My linux box is getting slammed from hackers trying to get in and I would like to start doing some preventative measures. Thanks Lovell

EPIA mini-itx MII video challenges

Some time ago I obtained an EPIA mini-itx motherboard to fool with. With FC2,3,4 I've been able to get networking, sound, and desktop running without trouble, but getting the hardware support for the MPEG-2 acceleration, or the alledged 3-D hardware support - forget it. Google and various archives may be friendly, but I'm not succeeding. My latest effort, I dropped back to a fresh install of FC4, and updated the kernel w/ yum to 2.6.13-1.1526_FC4, and xorg-x11 to 6.8.99.900-0.FC4.ucr.3 (those two packages happened to show up, I didn't set out to specify them) Attempting to fire up X results in a flicker of the screen, followed by black. <ctrl><alt><F1> allows me to <ctrl>c, and regain the screen. This happens both as a normal user and root> Looking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log the only entry that looks like an error is: AUDIT: Fri SEp 30 18:27:56 2005:3196 x: client 7 rejected from local host I will assume that means something to somebody, but its gibberish to me. I can post xorg.conf & what ever is desired, but I'd really like to get this machine working at it's fullest. Memory 64bit see 8gigs but can only use 4gigs

java web start broken

I just installed the latest JDK from Sun using rpms built with the jpackage spec file. The install seemed to work properly and everything that I've tried works, except java web start. strace shows the error, javaws looping on waitid(P_PID, 3163, 0xbff85180, 0, NULL) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument) This is the same bug that was in 1.4.2.crap. bug.sun.com shows that it's fixed in 5.2 (where's that?). If anyone has a fix to share (that doesn't involve a preload .so), I'd appreciate it. Regards, John

Installing 32-bit packages on FC4-64

How can I force yum to install the 32-bit version of, for example, XINE? Will it replace the not well working 64-bit package or must I remove that first? Tia, Albert

Hi all, I'm running KDE on FC4, and noticed things like /usr/libexec/evolution/2.2/evolution-alarm-notify, /usr/libexec/evolution-data-server-1.2, and /usr/libexec/bonobo-activation-server running when I do ps aux. Where are those things started from? (How can I turn them off?) thank you, eah

mplayer gui can't open dvd or vcd

hi, I installed mplayer and mplayer-gui mplayerplug-in-2.80-0.lvn.1.4 mplayer-1.0-0.lvn.0.26.pre7try2.4 mplayer-docs-1.0-0.16.pre7.2.fc4 mplayer-mencoder-1.0-0.lvn.0.26.pre7try2.4 mplayer-fonts-1.1-3.fc mplayer-gui-1.0-0.lvn.0.26.pre7try2.4 i can player dvd or vcd by mplayer dvd://1 or mplayer vcd://1 however, if I tried to open DVD or VCD at mplayer-gui (gmplayer), I always get error alike: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device How to fix it?? thanks Yuandan

how can I make a boot floppy disk?

I just finished installing fedora 3, I didn't install a boot loader, how can I make a boot floppy disk? I saw this note from fedora 4 installation dcumentation: "Your computer must have GRUB or another boot loader installed in order to start, unless you create a separate startup disk to boot from." But the installation finished and it didn't ask me to make one! also, I can burn a boot image on a cd, could that help

Swap memory

Hi everybody, I am running Fedora Core 4. When I use the 'free command' I get the following output: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 483196 350104 133092 0 29076 178420 -/+ buffers/cache: 142608 340588 Swap: 0 0 0 >From which it appears that swap memory is not active. In addition when the system is rebooted I get a warning that "line 10 of /etc/fstab is bad", or something like this. Line 10 corresponds to swap memory. It reads as follows: LABEL==i386 -mcpu=i68 swap swap defaults 0 0 Any hints on how to correct this? Thanks in advance, Gustavo J. Mata
