Building software from source

Hi there,
I have been using Linux for quite some time now and I have installed my own
webserver for testing purposes.
I have some question about building software though? How can I update
software that I have built from source?
Do I just download new source and build the new version? Will the old one
disappear then?
And what if you want to add configuration options afterwards? For example,
have have built PHP from source without
GD, and now I would like to use it. What do I do?

NeverWinter Nights

Has anyone managed to get NWN working under FC4 please? I've installed it okay
but everytime I go to run it I get "./nwn
Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)"
Can anyone help me out please?

mixing and matching vanilla kernel & Fedora

Is there a howto or other guide to mixing a vanilla kernel.org kernel w/ Fedora? More importantly, if so, where?
Per my previous message, I'm looking for specific driver support. It happens to be baked into 2.6.13. If I could mix 2.6.13 w/ my FC3 installation, I would be all set.

FC3 on external PCMCIA/USB disk (success)

Hi everyone,
I'm using an external USB disk, with the USB 2.0 controller being a
PCMCIA card. FC3 installed happily on this disk, alas it didn't boot
quite as happily from it. (Of course, I have grub on a /boot partition
of the internal IDE drive.)
Earlier Fedora versions came with the pcinitrd script of pcmcia-cs which
facilitated the creation of initrds for booting with PCMCIA, FC3 doesn't
have it. Documentation one gets from googling mostly refers to 2.4
kernels, where one has to hack /linuxrc to include cardmgr...
After experimenting a while with hacking /linuxrc and /init, I found out
that mkinitrd (which comes with FC3) already does the job, as long as
one is aware of the timing problem: PCMCIA and USB need some time to
come up before devices will be recognized.
Also, minitrd's option --with-usb always puts usb modules before modules
you specify with --with=, which is a bad thing in this case. So, just
put the usb modules after the pcmcia modules, using --with=usb-storage
etc. mkinitrd includes a "sleep 5" after loading usb-storage, and this
does the trick.
If enough people are interested I'll write up some more details.

kde kicker crashes

I have been having kicker crashes now and then
on FC4 when using the KDE desktop.
It seems to occur whenever I run the 'Control Center'
program to change things.
Example: use control center to change the stye and
colors used by KDE.
Then changes take effect ok, but when I
log out, the kicker crash occurs.
When I log back in, all the changes I made
are still there and KDE acts like nothing
ever happen.
I have applied all the kde updates
(e.g kdebase, kdelib, kdegraphics), arts and alsa
updates, and the xorg updates found on the FC4
download site.
Note: other types of changes can be made in the
control center, and kicker crashes may
also occur.
Has anyone else been having problems with kicker?
ps: yes I re-created my ~/.kde dir after updates
were applied.

Multi-session CDROM access... How?

I used xcdroast to create a multi-session CDROM. Then later,
I added another session, also as multi-session. Now when I access
the CDROM, I only see the files I added during the second session.
Where are the first files I put on there? How can I get to them?

Supported PCI Wireless card

Hello,
Does anyone know where I can find a list of supported PCI wireless card for FC
4 ? I am looking to buy a cheapo PCI Wireless card for an old desktop, but I
want to have something that will work out of the box with FC 4 (ie. I don't
really want to deal with ndiswrapper, etc).

One more mplayer qyestion

So I went and installed:
mplayer-1.0.0-0.20050916.1.fc4.ut
mplayer-libs-1.0.0-0.20050916.1.fc4.ut
And this is what happened. When I opened a movie trailer I got by
e-mail I got the sound but not the picture.
Then I went to www.css.com and tried to play their video. An error
message that it could not find Windows media player.
So what do I do now.?

yumex and memory

Using yumex use a lot of memory but it seems that yumex does not
restitute it. You use yumex, you look for something so first in your
default repos and after you try in other repos but at each time you
click on refresh on the repos tab yumex does not restitute the memory.
If i try this 4 or 5 times yumex saturate my memory and the only
possibility is to close yumex and reopen it.
Someone could confirm this and/or explain me why ?
