Access Old Home Directory

Hi, I recently upgraded my desktop system with a much larger hard drive. The old hard drive is now in an external hard drive enclosure (the kind made by Metal Gear Box) and is plugged in to a USB port. The old drive has these partitions Microsoft Windows XP -- 30 Gb Fedora Core 4 -- 30 Gb My problem is, I can see the /boot partition on the drive, but I cannot see the / (root) partition, and I'm want to get at my former home directory because I have some files there I forgot to back up. I'm wondering if that partition was named something like: '/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00' and mounted on /. Thanks for any help! Bob Cochran

setting up LDAP authentication on Active Directory

Hi guys, for many times i try to configure a fedora 3/4 to authenticate user on an active directory LDAP server. All my effort failled to make it working. And then i search people who finely achieve the goal & can help me. I work on it and try many configuration, and i don"t know where i'm wrong and if you want i'll post it here... Questions about Fedora Core 4

To Whom It May Concern: Does Fedora configure all my hardware like my cd rw writer/dvd player, hp 2100c scanner, hp 3322 color inkjet printer,, video card, monitor, my siemens 4100 dsl modem? Can Fedora detect my sbc dsl internet service? Can Fedora activate my scanner? Since my printer has a cd to install my printer software, can it be compatible if I have the Crossover Office Standard 5.0? I have a Logitech Mouseware 9.41.1 trackball with the windows compatible cd and I need to know if its compatible. If I saved my favorite websites on cd under windows xp, can I copy it and paste it to Fedora & Fedora compatible web browser? Is it possible I can download Windows Media Player 10, Adobe reader, Cyberlink PowerDVD 4.0, System Mechanic, Complete Cleanup, Norton Goback 3.0, Norton Utilities 2002, and McAfee Internet Security 8.0? If I can't download these Windows programs using Crossover Office Standard 5.0, does Fedora have similar programs? Does Fedora have a disk defragmentor program, anti virus program, anti spyware program, and a firewall program? If a web page requires windows media player, is it possible I can play the audio or video on a Fedora compatible media player? If I go to http://www.turbotaxfortheweb.com to file my taxes, will it work? With this website, I don't need to download any programs. Can I copy my photos from my cd that I saved under windows xp and transfer it to Fedora? US Language dictionary and OOo

Hi, Is there any way that I can switch off US English from being the default dictionary - it's annoying the crap out of me and the option is greyed out (which it shouldn't be IMO) under options so I can change it that way. nvidia TNT2 64 support

set font at boot time

Hi, I have a FC4 X-less. I want to set the fonts to alt-8x8. I know doing it once the system is launched, with setfont. What file should I edit to make the change permanent? hi list I am using a FC4 server as a grid master. I have to configure some services. I succeded to install HTTP, TFTP,.......... Why questions don't get answered, or "No, I've already RTFM, tell me the answer!"

I'd like to start a calm, respectful, reasonable discussion of the reasons that we tell people to RTFM, or reasons that people don't get their questions answered on mailing lists and usenet groups. I'm not complaining about anything or anybody, just wanting to start some discussion which might lead to more answers and less 'noise'. No one has been disrespectful to me, don't get the wrong idea. I personally am a former Microsoft Certified Professional in NT Server 4.0, have used operating systems including, PC DOS, MS DOS, OS/2 Warp, all flavors of Windows through XP Pro (except ME, which sucked sooo bad), Linux, FreeBSD, and currently, Mac OS X Tiger. I've administered networks consisting of hundreds of workstations and dozens of servers, installed lans and wans from scratch, taught Windows operating systems, software and networking. I feel that might just barely qualify me as knowing a little about computers, and I say that seriously...'a little'. There are a lot of things I don't know, and when I run out of research options, or get frustrated when all the troubleshooting solutions don't work, I'm heading for usenet or a mailing list, because time after time, that has been the resource that provided the solution. A wise man once told me, "Someone out there has solved that problem, you just have to find them." I don't really know where to start, so here are some random thoughts... Maybe I got told to RTFM because I missed something in it? Well, could you just politely point me to the section I missed, please? Or give me a link to a howto or some html page where it is explained? Maybe the question has been answered in the FAQ for the list? Just point me to it, you don't have to say anything else. I've seen lots of posts to this list and others with no subject or a subject that has nothing to do with the question, but the question was answered respectfully. So, when I post with a good subject, one that will show up in a Google search, help me out. Many lists and groups regularly autopost the guidelines for posting, FAQ, and relevant howto pages, point me to those when necessary. Someone used the phrase 'spoon feed' recently. I don't remember who, nor is it important, but what's wrong with a spoon full of sugar now and then? And why would you ignore a reasonable question unless you don't know the answer? I think the members of this list are mostly doing things the way I would like to see them done, but I also think we could all do better, eh? I don't mean to step on any toes, just want to start some discussion. Does anyone else have any thoughts on why questions don't get the respectful treatment they deserve? -- Thanks, Charles
