gdm user does not exist

-- sir/madam I am a linux student. yesterday i removed and reinstalled the setup packages using rpm -ivh command after using rpm -e setup after rebooting the system the graphics is not starting and system says gdm user does not exist. configure your /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf.. pls tell me how to fix the problem. Hi fedora's user, I had a problem here when I went to try carry out update of fedora-release and livna on FC3. snd_atiixp oss sound choppy

I find realplayer unusable on this hardware. Alsa sound works fine, but realplay uses oss. The sound is unusable, because it is so choppy. I tried kde control-center/sound system, and tried setting a larger buffer, but no good. I have quite a few other computers with different sound hardware on which the exact same test works fine. Any ideas?

They were however from a incompattible repo. I had to remove the already installed files/packages and reinstall them from livna and extras. Then I was able to install vlc from livna. Peter

Help configuring RAID0 - dmraid with SATA II drives and nvidia nforce 410

Maybe someone can help me figure out how to get RAID 0 up and running under FC 4. My system has a pair of SATA II drives and an nforce 410 chipset. I have installed the latest nvidia drivers for that chipset (another story - they are for audio and ethernet). Currently I have it booting off an external USB hard drive. The BIOS is configured to place the two hard drives in RAID 0 configuration. It says the RAID array is healthy. I have read as many HOWTOs and message threads as I have been able to find on the subject. The hard drives are brand new. There is no data or partitions from other operating systems to preserve. Here is what I have tried. 1. From FC4 (running on the USB drive), try to see the RAID array using dmraid. Nada. (I tried dmraid -s, dmraid -ay, dmraid -b. That last command does show the USB drive.) 2. Attempt to install FC4 onto the RAID array. Disk Druid complains that it does not see any disks. I know some people advise to turn off "fake raid" support in the BIOS and just do software raid. So, here are my questions: A) is there any way at all (from inside FC4 when it is running or during install) to get at the raid array that I have made in the BIOS? B) if the answer to the above is no, and I need to disable RAID in the BIOS, do I still use dmraid (because the nv_sata driver is involved) to set up the array under FC4? Or can I accomplish everything in Disk Druid during the install? Or do I need to set things up in Disk Druid and then activate the RAID array in dmraid? C) if the answer to A) is yes, what advantage would there be to disabling the BIOS RAID anyway? (I'm just curious.) When I finally do get this working, perhaps I should write a HOWTO for this - a real step-by-step cookbook. OTOH, FC5 is coming soon... TIA Debbie

FC4 - File System with Errors!

Hello: I realized that since the beginning of the week, during the booting process, I have got the follow error: /1. Contains a file system with errors, check forced. In the majority of the times, after that error, the system restarts normally. However, one day, it didn't work, and I needed to cut the power off manually. What does that error mean? Postfix problem

I have a stock FC2 installation that have dovecot/postfix installed and active. The machine is the target of the domain's MX record. Recently, I've had the problem that any mail addressed to that system spawns a smtpd process, which locks. Telnetting into smtp produced the expected responses, right up to the point where you send the rcpt to: line, at which point everything freezes. There's nothing visible in any log file to point to any error. Shelling into the system (which runs headless) and using the mail command works fine, but no mail actually arrives at any user's mail queue. I suspect a postfix problem, but don't have the knowledge to know where to look next. Anyone any ideas? The machine is running the latest postfix release ... I updated it manually after hitting this problem, but that didn't solve anything. (BTW, in case anyone is wondering, the domain has been dormant for quite a while, and I'm only just re-activating it, which is why I haven't spotted the problem before, even thought the machine has been running for months, apparently without any problems. I should have realised I wasn't receiving the usual root emails duh!) TD

BEFVP41 vs RV042 ... input please

Anyone have experience with the Linksys VPN routers? I'm looking for input for a VPN DEVICE compatible with Linux? I'd like to have something in place by the end of the week. There are two hardware units I'm looking at... Linksys BEFVP41: Linksys site: http://tinyurl.com/a9zsq Pricegrabber: http://tinyurl.com/74kk8 Linksys RV042: Linksys site: http://tinyurl.com/c7d5m Pricegrabber: http://tinyurl.com/9tqk7 The RV042 is about $50 more than the BEFVP41 but it will appearently balance the outgoing connections between both cable and DSL. Since both are in the house, this may be beneficial. I wonder how well it works, however. In any case, I'm worried about HOW the client machines will connect to the VPN. Most VPN vendors bring with them a proprietary client software application (both Cisco and Nortel do). I am HOPING that we can just enable IPSec on the Linux clients and automagically connect in somehow. Point being, all three (Windows, Mac, Linux) need to play well with it. Thanx, Ryan
