Repartitioning HD

Just got a new laptop with winxp installed. Can fedora installer repartition the hard drive to shrink the ntfs drive so I can install fedora? I can install partition magic and do it that way but just wanted to ask. I do want to keep the windows install. -Louis

file image creation failed

Hi, I was going to extract from a CD, but am getting a dialog window from grip stating: No tracks selected. Rip whole CD? On the GNOME desktop is an icon for the CD in question. XMMS is playing previously extracted mp3's fine. However, where "is" this CD? When I open the file browser I can click on the "computer" icon in the file browser, which displays several drives, including the disk in question. However, I can't get the path to that disk out of the GUI file manager (nautilus?). >From GNOME, right clicking on the icon gives an option to copy the CD, where I select to copy it to the desktop. This gives an error dialog stating: File image creation failed could not run sub process: Failed to execute child process "cdrdao" (no such file or directory). Previously I was using soundjuicer, which worked yesterday, but inexplicably, not today. soundjuicer gives an error that: Error Soundjuicer could not extract this CD. Reason: could not link pipeline. A data CD, in this case the Fedora rescue CD, can be browsed fine, however. Furthermore, GNOME isn't having a problem creating a disk image. So, data CD's work as expected. Pardon, not really correct usage of the list, but I gotta go, no time for googling on this at the moment :( I want to approach this from the command line, but I don't even know the path for the CD. Hi everybody, It has been so long since the last time I wrote something in this list. Well, at least it means that I have been able to keep going by myself. But, now I am stuck in a situation I would appreciate very much a little help. I want to transfer my fc5 installation from one IDE to a SATA drive. I have googled about grub and moving stuff cross drives but I still haven't found a easy way to do it. All file systems are ext3 and I have / and /boot partitions : source: /dev/hda1 12G / (label /1) /dev/hda3 100M /boot (label /boot) target: /dev/sdc1 20G / (label /barra) /dev/sdc2 150M /boot (label /barraboo) I have copied all files using "rsync -av source dest" and installed grub by typing "install (hd3,1)/grub/stage1 d (hd3) (hd3,1)/grub/stage2 (hd3,1)/grub/menu.lst" inside the grub shell. The device.map for grub is: # this device map was generated by anaconda (fd0) /dev/fd0 (hd0) /dev/hda (hd1) /dev/sda (hd2) /dev/sdb (hd3) /dev/sdc (hd4) /dev/sdd I have edited fstab (only in the target) accordingly and tried to reboot from sdc. I only got the word GRUB. When I boot from hda, I got a "file not found" error. Here follows the grub.conf entries : title Fedora test(sem quiet) root (hd3,1) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 ro root=LABEL=/barra rhgb initrd /initrd-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5.img title Fedora Core (sem quiet) root (hd0,2) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb initrd /initrd-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5.img If anybody knows how to get through this, please help. Any insight into having to use the kernel option irqpoll for the kernel to see the SATA drives on boot up, or the errors for the DVD's; hda [and hdb] :cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason 0x01). Resizing partitions

On my /dev/hda I have the following: Device Boot Start End Blocks Mount /dev/hda1 * 1 261 2096451 / /dev/hda2 262 783 4192965 /var/log /dev/hda3 784 1256 3799372+ <=== empty /dev/hda4 1257 1583 2626627+ [extended] /dev/hda5 1257 1517 2096451 /tmp /dev/hda6 1518 1583 530113+ [swap] My problem is that when I originally set this machine up, I made the mistake of allocating 2GiB for / and I have now run out of space twice. So, since I have 3.6GiB available in that empty space (it used to be another partition that I no longer need or use,) is there some way I can combine or add that space to / without having to rebuild the machine? ATI and GLX graphics

I had a system with a NVIDIA card, but the images on the screen were fuzzy. I had GLX for the NVDIA card installed. I replaced the graphics card with an ATI card and am now trying to get the GLX graphics working again. I have tried to delete all references and drivers for the NVDIA card from the system. I have upgraded the system from FC 2 to FC 3 to separate the NVDIA drivers from the kernel. I have "sh ati-driver-installer-8.28.8.run" When I reboot the system, glx does not work. Xorg.0.log contains: (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found) I don't see any warning messages in /var/log/messages concerning the graphics. How can I get glx working on this system? Thanks for your help.

yum broken ... HELP ....

Installation problem

Hi, Iam new to linux. I tried to install Fedora 5. But Iam unable to install it in graphical mode. I tried to install it in text mode by typing 'linux text' at prompt: I could install it. but when i say 'startx' at prompt: Iam unable to go to the GUI mode. Iam able to see garbled screen. I tried to install using expert,lowres,nofb,noprobe mothods. But no use. Can anyone give me any suggestion please...? Note: Iam able to run the live CD successfully on my machine. But the problem is with the installation only. My system configuration is... Processor : Intel Pentium 2.88 dual core Mother board : Intel 102d2 RAM : 512mb Monitor : 17'' LCD (LG) -Venkat --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo!
