Earphones - no sound
by Chong Yu Meng
Hi List!
So, I buy a pair of earphones so that I can continue watching YouTube
while my wife sleeps, and I find that when I plug them into my laptop,
the sound disappears! When I unplug it, the sound comes back on from my
laptop speakers. I looked into the Volume Control and tried twiddling
with 'alsamixer', but cannot figure out which control to set to get the
sound into my earphones.
I'm using FC6 and running XFCE, but I'm pretty sure that the controls
are probably independent of the window manager.
Any help gratefully accepted, and thanks in advance!

XBOX360 madwifi as asccess point
by Rick Lim
Hi there,
I have an Xbox360 with the Microsoft wireless network adapter and I am
trying to get it to connect with my FC6 madwifi access point.
I have 2 laptops, 3 palm pda that connect up to the AP, but the Xbox looks
like it does not connect up with the WEP enabled, if I try to connect to the
neighbours AP that is not WEP'd then it works ok, I even tried to remove the
WEP on my AP but no go.
Any one have any suggestions / similar troubles?

On using spamassassin
by Przemyslaw Gawronski
Hi, I'm using spamassassin for spam filtering with this rule of
procmail on FC5:
:0 fh w
* > 256000
* ^Subject:\/.*
| formail -I "Subject: {* -BIG- *} $MATCH"
# send mail through spamassassin
:0fw
| /usr/bin/spamc
Since I get about 200 mails a day I'm using the demons version not to
load spamassassin each time. But if I learn sa with sa-learn as a normal
user will that knowledge be used by the demon or it uses it's global
knowledge base? And to use it I should rather use:
| /usr/bin/spamassassin
in my procmail rule? But then load spamassassin each time?

parted package on x86_64
by Curtis Doty
Please help me file this bug in the right place. I think it may be
relevant to much more than just this base package. I'm just using parted
as an example.
On fresh x86_64 FC6, it installs both parted.i386 and parted.x86_64. My
first question is why? There don't appear to be any dependencies on either
specific arch. Although, I do understand that parted is a general good
thing to have in Core. Why not just the 64-bit package?
Rpm verify produces the usual annoying uselessness from multi-arch
installs. What's interesting is no errors with the 64-bit package:
# rpm -V parted.x86_64 ; echo $?
0
But loads of failures with the 32-bit package:
# rpm -V parted.i386

Silly and confusing how rpm on Fedora seems to give ownership of the same
file to conflicting packages, but still allow them to be co-installed
automatically from anaconda. Why does this happen for quite a number of
FC6 packages? It renders rpm -V utterly useless due to extremely high
noise to signal ratio.
Anyways, that's not my bug. After removing just the 64-bit package
(for "fun" just now), *very* wacky and curious results are found:
# rpm -e parted.x86_64
# rpm -V parted.x86_64 ; echo $?
0
WTF? It still verifies clean. And check this:
# rpm -V parted.i386 ; echo $?

See how I've removed the 64-bit package, but it still verifies clean.
However, the 32-bit package now burps with even *more* drama.
Is this a bug with rpm? Or am I missing something totally fundamental
about the true value of new-and-improved Fedora Core and why we no longer
need simple old techniques like relying on the verification of installed
packages? Heck, if I want that, I go play with Ubuntu or FreeBSD...or
Microsoft Windows. :-/

[FC6] autofs timing out?
by P Jones
Hi All;
My network has an SME 7 (www.smeserver.org) server as its main file
server. It shares a few directories by NFS3. When I plug my FC6 laptop
into the network and power up, the shares appear automatically in
/net. So far so good... It seems that these shares time out and are
inaccessible after a period of time, maybe an hour or so, I haven't
timed it. Restarting autofs fixes the problem for a while. FC5 didn't
have this problem. On another FC6 machine that I mount the same shares
in fstab the problem doesn't occur. Anyone else seeing this?
Thanks,
-P

Liloulinux:
Kudos for your care and interest in trying to communicate clearly and
effectively. It is true that most people will forgive grammatical errors --
but it's always preferable to be careful and clear (in any language) if you
can.
At the risk of sliding off topic, I found these books helpful and you might
like them too.
_The Elements of Style_, by Strunk and White. This has been called the
"little book", and it has some of the nicest explanations of what
well-written English is like.
_The Careful Writer_, by Theodore Bernstein. This book tends more to
English usage as opposed to strict grammar -- that is, the words and phrases
that are commonly used by English speakers, and not only the mechanics of
writing. The word history in this book is fun to read.
Enjoy! Erik

problem restarting xen guest after FC6 installation to guest
by Charles Curley
I just installed xen on a recent FC6 installation. I was able to
create a minimal FC6 guest machine (domain, I gather, in xen
parlance). When the installation finished, I told it to reboot. The
VNC viewer shut down.
I now cannot start the guest. I get, e.g.:
