Generic Install
by Todd Simi
Hi,
I have a friend that is using a box I setup for him several years ago with RedHat 7.2. I think he would really like FC and would like to send him a hard drive with already installed, as he is not an OS/Hardware guy.
Is it possible for me to install an IDE drive in my machine ( Pentium 486 D ) and load FC4 on it in a generic enough for that will run on his older, probably Pentium II machine?
If everything is modular, won't the initrd be incorrect? Can I force the installation to use a generic IDE driver?
Thanks

Software for programming a plc
by Jon Jahren
Hello.
The school I am currently attending have plc-programming in their
curriculum, and I really wanna use my laptop for programming the plc.
Is there any software out there for GNU/Linux that allows one to program
a plc from GNU/Linux, and upload it to the plc?
Thanks in advance

Finding files containing 'string'
by Anne Wilson
I need to list all files that refer to my network-name, but I can't work
out a command to do it. I thought I would have to cat everything,
piping through grep 'string', but that doesn't search recursively, the
help-file doesn't show a recursive flag, and I'm not sure that it would
actually give me the filenames anyway.
Help, please?

error booting FC4 DVD on MSI 7032
by Antonio Barragan
Dear All
My linux box is an MSI 7032 MB with a 40 GB hard drive (primary master)
and two CD units in the following arrangement:
LG CD-RW drive as secondary master
SAMSUNG CD-R drive as secondary slave
Some time ago I installed Fedora 3 DVD (64 bit version) and now I want
to update to FC 4.
When the system is trying to boot from the DVD, the following message
(among other things) appears:
Kernel Panic: not syncing VFS: unable to mount fs on uknown block (3.2)
If someone can explain what this means and how to correct it, I will
greatly appreciate it.
BTW, I tried the FC4 DVD on another machine and it's OK
cheers

Hi Again Gowri!
In a previous e-mail you mentioned:
> > > ttyS3,
> > > baud rate 57600 8n1 which in acordance with embedded system.
But ttyS3 in your machine generated minicom setup file shows:
pr port /dev/ttyS3
pu baudrate 115200
And I note that you have a ttyS0 set up for 57600. Are you plugged into and
talking with the right com port?
I also note that hardware/software flow control in the ttyS3 port is:
pu rtscts No
pu xonxoff Yes
The "rtscts" is the hardware flow control (Request To Send - Clear To Send)
and "xonxoff" is the software flow control. If it were me I would try
actively setting and resetting each of these elements in an active session
with the machine connected. You can do that from within the minicom
program as previously mentioned.
If you have an old serial modem sitting arround they are good to use to tell
you if you are talking with a given serial port. You could even use another
computer in terminal mode.
If you are into voltmeters, the active (transmit) lines will rest at between
-5 and -12 volts (it may be + - the RS232 standard has low a minus voltage
and high a plus voltage but I may have that reversed). The RTS and
DTE lines you should see change when you toggle the hardware flow control.
The transmit line you should see "jump" as you transmit characters.
Good Hunting!

creating boot iso w/ extra network drivers
by Eliezer Ramm
Hi,
i need to send a small .iso image for someone to burn
at a remote location so i can do a ftp install on a
machine. i used this link for a guide.
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/x8664-multi-i...
there is no one where the box is located who can pop
disks in/out during the install. i have access via a
rsa card.
when the cd runs in the remote location after choosing
ftp install it tells me i don't have a device for this
and offers me the choice of choosing a driver or
inserting another disk
my problem is that the isolinux folder does not have
the network drivers (Broadcom NetXtreme BCM570x )i
need and i wanted to try to burn another .iso w/ the
drvnet.img file on it or better the Broadcom driver
itself.
questions: copying the drvnet.img file to a diskette
is well documneted.. how do i get these files on the
same .iso as my boot cdrom so when linux boots of the
cd it can find the drivers ?
how can i compile a driver and put it on the cd so
linux will find it during boot or when it asks me for
a driver i can point it back to the cd ?
also is there a generic driver i can use until i
re-install the whole system ?
would module arguments help ?
thanx
eramm

How to create the nodes automatically
by Srinivas G.
Dear All,
I have developed a simple character driver for accessing the custom PCI
board in Fedora Core 3. It is working fine. I am creating the device
nodes manually using the mknod command after inserting my module into
the kernel space. But when I restart the system the nodes are not there.
But the module is present. I have added the MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE in my
module for loading it at boot time. I have read about the
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE in LDD3. It will add the module name to the
modules.pcimap and modules.dep file.
My question is:
Is there any way to create the nodes automatically after restarting the
system if the module exists?
I have heard about devfs. But I did not know about it.
Could any one please respond to my question?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Srinivas G
