Re: Problem installing from ISO
by linux70@comcast.net
I may be having a brain-freeze this morning but I followed the directions (burned the ISO's over to 4 CD's) and when I put the first CD in the CD drive, and reboot, all I get is a blinking cursor, then it boots from the hard drive to Windoze. I checked the bios and the CD drive is 1rst in the bootlist priority. This is new CD software (Sonic DigitalMedia) so I may be missing something. I assume when I reboot, the Fedora install menu should come up. Any ideas?

GPS, CXO. amd topo maps
by Beartooth
I have Garmin's MapSource Topo 3.0 and Maptech's Terrain Navigator 5.03
both installed under CrossoverOffice 5.0.1 Pro, running on Fedora Core 4;
I have been unable to install Topo.com 2.6.1, and had an intermediate
result from trying Delorme TopoUSA 4.0 -- sometimes it *seems* to install,
but won't open, or opens only to a plain tan screen ruled into parts,
each labelled "No controls specified." Sometimes the install fails
entirely. (The same also happens on TopoUSA 3.0 and on the same supplier's
3-D Topo Quads, btw & fwiw.)
The two that do install open all right, and seem to do things internal
to themselves normally ; but they don't manage to connect either to a
Garmin Etrex Vista or to a Garmin Rino 120.
Following suggestions from the CXO list, I have made sure my user btth is
a member of the uucp group on that machine, and also that I see
[root@localhost dev]# ls -lL ttyS*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root uucp 4, 64 Feb 25 13:02 ttyS0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root uucp 4, 65 Feb 25 13:02 ttyS1
crw-rw-rw- 1 root uucp 4, 66 Feb 14 13:57 ttyS2
crw-rw-rw- 1 root uucp 4, 67 Feb 14 13:57 ttyS3
[root@localhost dev]#
but the GPSs still don't connect.
The same GPSs, with the same cables, do connect to the same software
(including the ones that CXO doesn't handle) on a machine running
XPPro/SP2, and do exchange data; so I doubt the problem is hardware. (One
of my machines has a short pin in its only serial port; but I don't see
anything wrong with any of the others.)
All clues gratefully accepted!

Problem installing from ISO
by linux70@comcast.net
It has been a while since I have done this so my memory may be off. I've downloaded the 4 ISO files for FC4. To put them on CD, do I have to specifiy that I am making an ISO. So I am making an ISO of an ISO. Also, does the CD need to be 'bootable'. I tried just copying the ISO image onto a CD but when I reboot, nothing comes up. TIA.

Hi again Antonio!
You are probably at the point where tcpdump/Ethereal are the tool to unravel
the mystery,
Have a good weekend my friend!

Proxy authentication on console
by Deboo ^
How to use proxy authentication with lynx/links/elinks? I have googled a lot
about this but couldn't find a eral solution. Putting "export HTTP_PROXY=
user:password@proxy:port in.bashrc doesn't seem to work. I get an access
denied page. Is there no solution to this? Do we need to use X apps only to
use a proxy?

How to make programs link the lib64/* instead of lib/* on FC4?
by Robinson Tiemuqinke
Hi,
I got a questions about FC4 64bit and 32bit OSes, I
have a program compiles and works on FC4 32bit without
problems; but when I compiled it on FC4 64bit, it
failed to locate libraries, and I have to specify
/usr/lib64/* explicitly to make it compile and work.
I know the above is too ridiculous, anyone know how
to deal with this problem? I know there are a lot of
experts here... :)
Thanks.

RE: Newbie Questions
by Don Bedsole
Hi Tim,
I think the other people have spoke to your installation concerns better than
I can, but I do have one suggestion. Once you get your system installed, if
your system resources (read memory) are tight, you will need to consider what
kind of desktop to run. The two biggies are KDE and Gnome, but they might be
kind of resource intensive for the 128 megs. you have available. You might
want to try Xfce4 as your desktop environment. I don't think you need KDE or
GNOME installed to use it (Someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I hope this is the beginning of a long and profitable relationship between you
and Linux.

Is SELinux resetting permissions?
by Anne Wilson
SELinux is installed but disabled, according to system-config-services, yet I
have problems with permissions which appear to get re-set. When I change the
permissions attributes of a folder I always get an error dialogue. The perms
appear to change, but later I find that they have been re-set. This makes
sharing folders difficult if I want to enforce owner/group attributes.
Is this being caused by SELinux or something else?
