How to install nvu on FC5
by Pasha R
The nvu package from www.nvu.com requires xorg-x11-deprecated-libs to
be installed. Where can I find this package for FC5? Is there an
alternative rpms for nvu on FC5?

That's fine but I had no CD drive until I changed fstab on both FC-5
computers here?
Obviously there's something going on that's not obvious to me ...

Internet lockup
by Gordon Gallup
Greeting All,
I have a new e-machine T6420. It is connected to a hub with three
other machines and the hub is connected to a Siemans DSL
"modem-router". I installed FC5 on the T6420. The behavior is
somewhat flakey, but it appears that ssh and sftp (particularly the
latter) break networking if I attempt to send too much information.
It appears to require a reboot to re-estaablish contact. Fiddling with
the inetd.network script does nothing I can detect, although it thinks
the network is up. Before the death, pinging works fine all around
the machines connected to the hub and also to my office machine across
town. In addition, Firefox works for a while, but I can't say yet
just how long.
Attempting to connect with the kio-slave 'fish' never works.
Thanks for any help, GAG

[PHILOSOPHY] Stability and Release Schedules
by John Wendel
Here's your chance to slap me up side of the head!
Reading the Debian thread (and others) has made me wonder why Fedora
has to have "releases" at all. Why not have a continuously evolving
distribution? One would start by downloading an "installer system"
that would then use the existing mechanisms (yum, whatever) to update
itself. From this point on, why would one need "releases"? Just keep
releasing updates and new packages exactly as things are done now.
I know there must be something wrong with this scenario; would someone
like to hit me with a clue stick.
Regards,
John

Installing FC from HDD image
by Ali Helmy
Hey mates,
I have the FC5 DVD iso image on my WinXP computer, at [C:/FC DVD] and the
extracted version of that image at [ C:/FC DVD/Extracted], where C is my
only partition on my primary HDD (which I think should be hda1, right?)
So when I load up Grub using [vmlinuz] and [ startrd.img], it asks me for
the source of the installation media (you know the menu with Local CD-ROM,
NFS image, HDD image, FTP, HTTP). When I choose HDD image, it presents me
with three options (even though I only have two HDDs); namely [ /dev/hda1] [
/dev/hdb1] and [/dev/hdb2]
I tried entering [ /FC DVD/] or [/FC DVD/Extracted/] with and without the
start and ending slashes, with all of the three available HDD options, but
it always gives me:
Error: Failed to read directory /tmp/hdimage/Fedora DVD: No such file or
directory...
followed by
Error: Device /dev/hda1 does not seem to contain Fedora CD images
So, what is wrong? and If there should be another procedure to install FC5
from my computer, please tell me... I already have the DVD iso downloaded

Cheers,
A. Helmy

Open Letter: How the FOSS Community May Help Disabled Users
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
the following letter has already been posted on Linux Today and
www.lxer.com. Please give to it the greatest diffusion you can, and
evaluate in your LUG (or any other FOSS association!) the possibility
to organize the kind of initiative described in the letter (*).
Excerpt:
"I recently wrote an article about the serious communication problems
between the Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) community and disabled
users. The feedback on several forums, including Slashdot, prove that
I was right. Here is a practical proposals on how any group of FOSS
advocates may fill this gap in its own community..."
