Trouble starting postgresql

Hello! On my FC5 server, I wanted to configure postgresql to use /home/pgsql/data instead of /var/lib/pgsql/data. (/home partition is huge and doesn't get formatted when system is upgraded or new system installed.) I created the directory, ran initdb; everything seemed ok. Research seemed to tell me that I should perform the reconfiguration in /etc/sysconfig/pgsql. However, I could not start the service when the new directory was specified there. Much experimentation led me to this: [root@citadel ~]# rm -f /home/pgsql/pgstartup.log [root@citadel ~]# cp /etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql /etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql2 cp: overwrite `/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql2'? y [root@citadel ~]# cp /etc/sysconfig/pgsql/postgresql /etc/sysconfig/pgsql/postgresql2 cp: overwrite `/etc/sysconfig/pgsql/postgresql2'? y [root@citadel ~]# cat /etc/sysconfig/pgsql/postgresql PGDATA=/home/pgsql/data PGLOG=/home/pgsql/pgstartup.log [root@citadel ~]# service postgresql start Starting postgresql service: [FAILED] [root@citadel ~]# service postgresql2 start Starting postgresql2 service: [ OK ] [root@citadel ~]# service postgresql2 stop Stopping postgresql2 service: [ OK ] [root@citadel ~]# cat /home/pgsql/pgstartup.log postmaster cannot access the server configuration file "/home/pgsql/data/postgresql.conf": Permission denied LOG: logger shutting down [root@citadel ~]# To sum up: I made an exact copy of the server startup script and an exact copy of my configuration script. The copy starts, but the original fails. Obviously, I'm missing something fundamental here. Any help is appreciated as I am at the end of ideas.

Error 15: File not found after FC 5 Install

I installed the 5-CD set of Fedora Core 5 and within 5 seconds after I press Enter on the GRUB menu, it displays these messages: Booting 'Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl)' root (hd0,0) Filesystem is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue... Whenever I press any key, it takes me back to the GRUB menu. When I press Enter from GRUB, it takes me through the error sequence I describe above. Thanks for your time, I hope you can help.

Break a mirrored drive on Linux

Breaking a mirrored drive ________________________________ Is there a way in Linux to break a mirror, and then use the drive that was broken for some new partition (example: /home). FC3 and FC4. I am running out of space and I am finding the RAID 1 is no longer desired. B.

Can't enable DMA when using IDE devices on SATA controllers

Hi, I have several IBM desktops and some notebooks in which the IDE interface is a SATA controller, most of them Intel. Problems w/ serial flow control

Hi. I'm running FC3 on an MSI-7142 (K8MM-V motherboard), and using the two serial ports on the m/b. I used the stock out-of-the-shrinkwrap settings for most hardware (except for the sound board and X drivers), and things have worked fine. But... when connecting to a router's console at 115200 with either RTS/CTS or XON/XOFF flow control, I'm seeing dropped characters. Any ideas why? With a 16-deep FIFO, and a 3.2G processor (an Athalon 2800+), I shouldn't be seeing overruns or even the queue filling up (assuming the watermark is at 14 or 15...). So... what's the issue? I couldn't figure out what module was being used... looks like it's a compiled-in driver, so I'm not sure how to find what parameters would need to be set. Any suggestions are appreciated. Can't install kernel-2.6.16-1.2122_FC5.src.rpm

Printer Share in FC5

I have a new FC5 system with two printer (parallel Epson C70 and USB Samsung Ml-1610) that work great. Now I want to share both of them with another FC5 laptop. I followed the procedure but I can't get the test page from remote machine (that is used also on another network and can share printers). I used the printer configuartion tool, I told to share printers to All using CUPS (IPP). Where shall I start investigation??? Any help will be appreciated.....please note that it is not depending on iptables as I didn't succeed even when iptables was stopped. No Ed, I tried sudo first then swithed to root on Knoppix. In fc5 I logged in as root. Still read only file systems Bill Steibel bsteibel(a)amnh.org

dell d820 volume keys

For what it is worth, I tried the ubuntu live cd and noticed that the volume special keys on my d820 worked. They do not work under FC5. Further investigation shows that FC5 does not have them enabled in gnome. To enable them + others, go System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts and highlight under the Sound area, the "Volume mute" and press the mute key. Do the same for "Volume up" & "Volume down" with the respective volume up/down keys. QUESTION: Are those defaults based on hardware discovery or just someones idea of a default? -- Brian Millett - [ Sinclair and Garibaldi, "Survivors"] "How you feeling?"
