Open Letter: How the FOSS Community May Help Disabled Users
by M. Fioretti
Greetings,
the following letter has already been posted on Linux Today and
www.lxer.com. Please give to it the greatest diffusion you can, and
evaluate in your LUG (or any other FOSS association!) the possibility
to organize the kind of initiative described in the letter (*).
Excerpt:
"I recently wrote an article about the serious communication problems
between the Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) community and disabled
users. The feedback on several forums, including Slashdot, prove that
I was right. Here is a practical proposals on how any group of FOSS
advocates may fill this gap in its own community..."

Nvidia & Twinview Weirdness
by lostson
Hello
I am using FC5 with a nvidia gforce 5700xp. I also use twinview and I
use the kmod-nvidia from livna. When setting up my twinview like I have
always done, I keep my xorg.conf from a backup from FC4 and It doesn't
change much. I set it up with my 1280x1024 on both screens and it
launches ok and all. The problem I am having is when going to System -->
Preferences --> Scree Resolution in Gnome it says Im running 2560x1024
which is right but the refresh rate says 50 Hz. I don't know why this is
doing this I have set my refresh rates in my xorg.conf it should be 60
Hz. Does anyone know if there is a bug in the Screen Resolution app ? Or
is there something wrong with the nvidia driver or kmod-nvidia module
from livna. The reason I ask is my eyes start to kill me after a hour or
2 and I have never had this problem before. I could sit here for 12
horus and it would never bother me. So i'm looking for ideas and
thoughts, thanks.

FC4 and Sil 3512 SATA RAID
by Christopher J. Bottaro
Hi,
I have a motherboard that has the Sil 3512 chipset for SATA RAID. I made a
RAID-0 set for my hard drives in the BIOS. I installed FC5 from DVD and it
recognized the RAID set as a single hard drive...perfect! The problem is
that FC5 is too new for me and some stuff doesn't work. I want to
downgrade to FC4. Is there any way to get the FC4 installer to recognize
my RAID set as a single hard drive like the FC5 installer does?
Thanks for the help.
P.S. I know "hdparm -t" is a crappy test, but FC5 using the Sil 3512 for
RAID got 85 MB/s, where as FC4 using the same hard drives and 100% software
RAID got 50 MB/s.

OT-motherboard
by Bob Taylor
What Intel or AMD based 32 bit motherboard would you recommend with a
minimum 1 Gig RAM. I don't require the latest. The first board
manufactured with 1 Gig RAM would be fine. Of course Linux must fully
support the board.
I'm asking because I am totally ignorant about motherboards. :-)

Thank you Paul Howarth and Kam Leo I used the base usl http:

/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
on all files in my /etc/yum.repos.d and get the following re

Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates
What do you think is wrong please!
I received a letter from Leon & Tim complaining that my mail
could not be read. This my be due to my using a bigfoot web
account while my FC5 is being set up. This should be in pla
in text. I hope that this is readable.
With thanks,
Malcolm Candlish

check your fedora-updates.repo located in /etc/yum.repos.d , remove the # from #baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
it might work!

FC5 Firefox not rendering print same ast FC3
by David Scholes
I just upgraded from FC3 to FC5 and everything went well except I'm getting some
firefox printing problems that were previously corrected in FC3. I'm not
getting any responses from the firefox mailing list so looks like I need to go
back to the version I was using on FC3.
Do I need to build from source? I tried using the FC3 rpm but ran into
problems. Appreciate any pointers on a best plan of action.
More info below from my post to the firefox list:
*************************
I recently upgraded from (Fedora Core) FC3 to FC5 and am now using
firefox-1.5.0.2-1.2.fc5. Everything went well with the upgrade except the new
version of firefox no longer cleanly renders some pages for printing or Print
Preview. This is a problem I encountered early on when I first used FC3 but it
went away after a few upgrades of firefox.
We use a web based application that generates a report. It appears to be a form
with some protected fields. You can change some of the values by making changes
in those that are unprotected. They are using some kind of javascript and frames
so you don't see the details by doing a view source. When printing or in print
preview the data in the text boxes is not centered and gets cut off. Also some
pages that used to print on one page now flow onto a second.
I also use the latest same version of firefox on a Win XP machine and the
printing is fine there.
I've tried going back to the firefox rpm that was used in FC3 but evidently
there are some font differences or something. It installed but .... multitude of
problems.
I've also tried turning off pango by setting the env variable
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1
Any help appreciated!

FC5, madwifi and system-config-network
by Christopher J. Bottaro
Hi,
I installed madwifi-ng on my newly installed FC5 box. I could connected to
my WEP protected network just fine using the 'modprobe', 'ifconfig',
'ifup', 'iwconfig', and 'route' commands. The problem is that I don't want
to use those commands to connect. I simply want to use
system-config-network to make a profile that I can use with the 'ifup'
command.
system-config-network doesn't see ath0 when I select "New wireless device."
It only sees wifi0 when I select "New ethernet device."
'iwconfig' sees ath0. 'ifconfig' sees lo, eth0, and wifi0. modprobe.conf
has an entry 'alias wifi0 ath_pci'.
Something seems wrong. Why is there an "ethernet" device for my wireless
device? Why does ifconfig see ath0, but system-config-network doesn't?
Thanks for the help.

FC3 => FC5 upgrade... possible?
by Philip Prindeville
I have a system that was installed as FC3, and has been extensively
reconfigured (added outside repos, etc) and did some source-level
builds and installs.
I'm hoping to find a path to upgrade to FC5, rather than having to
note all my config changes, save all my data, install, reconfigure,
and then restore my data.
Can this be done?
Thanks,
-Philip
