F8 Samba
by Antonio M
I re-installed F8 and I am running a mixed network with Windws, F8, F8
development.
I forgot to backup the configuration file for samba.
Now I re-created this file (smb.conf):
#
#
#======================= Global Settings =====================================
[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
workgroup = workgroup
cups options = raw
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
server string = Samba Server Version %v
security = user
passdb backend = tdbsam
max log size = 50
#============================ Share Definitions ==============================
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = no
writable = yes
; valid users = %S
; valid users = MYDOMAIN\%S
[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
; guest ok = no
; writable = No
printable = yes
# Un-comment the following and create the netlogon directory for Domain Logons
; [netlogon]
; comment = Network Logon Service
; path = /var/lib/samba/netlogon
; guest ok = yes
; writable = no
; share modes = no
# Un-comment the following to provide a specific roving profile share
# the default is to use the user's home directory
; [Profiles]
; path = /var/lib/samba/profiles
; browseable = no
; guest ok = yes
# A publicly accessible directory, but read only, except for people in
# the "staff" group
; [public]
; comment = Public Stuff
; path = /home/samba
; public = yes
; writable = yes
; printable = no
; write list = +staff
[testsamba]
path = /home/antonio/testsamba
writeable = yes
browseable = yes
public = yes
valid users = antonio
When I try to connect to the PC from another Fedora machine I get to
the windows showing the testsamba directory, but when I click on it I
get the request for login, I insert antonio as user and password but I
am rejected and a new login window appear.
Same from a Windows machine. Selinux is on.
Any hint??? Tnx

Fan runs constantly on (Acer TravelMate 4602WLMi ) Please help me.
by Ivan Evstegeneev
Hello everyone,
Completely new to linux and need some help, and for about two month I look for some answers for my problem, but with no success.
My laptop's fan works almost constantly in Fedora 8.
I've made some search and found this topic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=330917
But its relates to Ubuntu Linux only.
In Fedora there are some folders: /etc/acpi/events. In these folders you can find these files: Power.conf and Video.conf
This is the print of those files:
****************
Power.conf
****************
# ACPID config to power down machine if powerbutton is pressed, but only if # no gnome-power-manager is running event=button/power.* action=/bin/ps awwux | /bin/grep gnome-power-manager | /bin/grep -qv grep || /sbin/shutdown -h now
**************
Video.conf
**************
Code:
# Configuration to turn on DPMS again on video activity, needed for some # laptops. Disabled by default, uncomment if your laptop display stays blank # after you close and open the lid. #event=video.* #action=/usr/sbin/vbetool dpms on
Please help me to solve this problem.
Just tell me how can I fix it or just to check if this situation is "Ok" or not.
What about all of those commands in power.conf and video.conf?
Thanks in advance.

Hi All,
I have installed the lunar calendar applet on my F8 desktop :-)
Is there a similar solar applet that gives sunset/sundown times ?

yumex not functioning on my f8 platform
by Richard England
Sometime early this week I noticed that yumex on my f8 system was not
showing any updates. I was getting the pup (?) notification that
updates existed but I couldn't see them in yumex.
Today I change my /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora_updates.repo file so I was
looking at baseurl instead of mirror list and yumex still did not show
any update but yum allowed me to add the 26 it showed as available.
I try to keep a watch on this list but I saw nothing about any problems
with mirrors or yum or yumex. I haven't touched my yum or yumex set
up, except to add livna, and even that I did with a rpm.
What did I miss? Anyone out there that can shed some light on what
might have happened or suggest some diagnostics for me?
Thanks,
~~R

Re: I miss smbfs: cifs doesn't work as expected
by Tom Horsley
> In FC8, instead, using cifs I can't obtain the same result: mounting
> always fails. The problem seems to be related to mount.cifs:
I hadn't tried cifs in Fedora 8 till I read this, so I gave the script
I was using in fedora 7 a try, and it wouldn't work anymore, but I didn't
get permission problems, I got an error telling me the UNC name
(which DID start with //) didn't start with // and needed to start with
either // or \\. To see if it would make it happy, I tried changing
all the forward slashes in my windows path names to pairs of backslashes
(to get them through shell processing), and then the mounts worked again.
I'll attach the silly script I run (as root) to do the mounting.
