system hangs with all-generic-ide & irqpoll
by David Scriven
I am still battling with my Intel DG965 motherboard and getting Linux to
recognise the ide compnents - the DVD & 2nd hard drive.
I'm using the latest kernel 2.6.19, but that still doesn't recognise the
ide or PATA components. While using all-generic-ide & irqpoll does
allow those items to be recognised the system runs slower and
will freeze randomly, requiring a reboot. I use kde as my desktop.
Switching the SATA to AHCI is really not an option as that will
require reinstallation of systems (this is a dual boot system).
Incidentally, the much-loathed Windows works perfectly and
recognises everything.
I have applied the latest BIOS updates from Intel, so other
than wait for a kernel update, what to do?

Undetected video card on xSeries 206m
by Federico Fanton
Hi everyone!
I have a little problem with FC6 running on an IBM xSeries 206m machine..
I can't get Xorg to detect the integrated video card (Radeon 7000/VE)
using the ati driver, while with FC4 and 5 everything was ok..
The fbdev driver works though, but it's a bit slow.

It worked fine for me. The URL has to be in a single line, though.
I heard an interview of a girl from the navy which posed for playboy in
2000.
I used mplayerplug-in-3.35 from freshrpms. cache size of 512 bytes.

Video conferencing
by Frank Pineau
When I travel on business, I like to set up video chat to talk to my
family at home. The problem is, home is behind a NAT firewall (a PIX to
be exact). I have limited IP addresses and cannot spare one to
statically assign to an endpoint inside my network for this purpose.
Regardless, I'd like to be able to connect to any node in my network,
depending on who I want to call. I never know what I'm going to be
behind, but it's usually also some sort of NAT firewall that I do not
control. I've tried ekiga (nee Gnome Meeting), and a few others with
almost no luck. I thought something like skype (which doesn't support
video under linux) or an instant messenger that uses an intermediary
server (Yahoo, ICQ, etc.) to get around the NAT issues but none of those
support video either. I've tried VPN to my PIX, but as I can't control
where I'm coming from, I haven't been able to configure a reliable VPN
client for linux.
In short, when trying to video conference under linux, I'm successful
around 5% of the time. It's almost always easier to boot into Windows
and do it from there. What do you use for mobile video chat and how
have you set it up?

RE: The Case of the Missing Characters
by kwhiskerz kwhiskerz
I'm not using a windows machine. I don't use windows. I only use Linux, and basically, only Fedora. I install other distros now and again just to see, but I always use fedora.Yes, I notice that hotmail is not wrapping the lines correctly. They jsut go on and on. How come?I am not sure how to selectively disable html, but I will have a look at the options. I don't like this windoes live mail at all. It is very slow to reload and rebuild a page and doesn't seem to like firefox, or something. I keep getting errors. Maybe I'll have to create a google account, but I'm tired of having so many email accounts and want to consolidate.

Re: xmms fc6

Hi,
I do not mount removable media automatically.
I use automount for that. I have a file auto.vol
# This is an automounter map and it has the following format
# key [ -mount-options-separated-by-comma ] location
# Details may be found in the autofs(5) manpage
a -fstype=auto,rw,sync,umask=0 :/dev/fd0
d -fstype=auto,ro,nosuid,nodev :/dev/hdd
e -fstype=auto,ro,nosuid,nodev :/dev/hdc
Therefore, I use /vol/d or /vol/e for my two writers.
Another inconvenience with automatic mounting, is if
I have to rewrite a CD-RW in k3b. If it is already mounted, k3b
gives me an error, and I would have to umount it before writing.
The automount approach also solves this problem for me.
For audio CDs, I use cdfs (from ATrpms), which mount audio cds,
and If I want to play them in xmmx I see the files (in their mount point)
as .wav. I can either copy the .wav files as ordinary files, which is a form
of ripping.

Yeah, like ya sure have to be careful with knail about which identity is
sending! hahaha
I thought if I just set the smtp transport for the identity then all would be
fine, but kmail doesn't necessarily choose the correct identity when you hit
reply :-)

Problems with Fedora Core 3
by Dev Anshul
Hello,
I've experienced problems in sound card installation with FC 3,
and I found it to be generally quite unstable - it would not crach, but
applications such as gthumb running on it would crach unexpectedly. This
problem was the version that I had downloaded when it had just been
released. The machine on which I was having these problems was a Pentium
III 450 MHz. I have since installed Mandriva 2006 Linux on the same
machine, because I needed multimedia functionality on my machine, which
this OS provided, since I was able to install the sound card. I'm now
upgrading to a Pentium Core 2 Duo machine with on-board sound and graphics
and wanted to check if it will be all right to use any Fedora version core
3 and beyond, since I've personally experienced problems with FC 3.
I was currently contemplating Fedora Core 2 64-bit for the machine
that I'm upgrading to, but I also wanted to check if it is all right to
run a 64-bit Fedora version for a home PC, although the vendor says that a
Pentium Core 2 Duo would support a 64-bit OS. Will Fedora be able to
detect on-board sound and graphics support on a Pentium Core 2 Duo? There
is no separate sound or graphics card, and these functionalities are
available only on the motherboard, which is an OEM Intel Chipset
motherboard.
Regards,
- Dev.

cron problem
by kwhiskerz kwhiskerz
On the weekend an update to cron came out with this new script: /etc/cron.daily/000-delay.cron
What it appears to do is to introduce a random length of delay before cron/anacron run.
What is the point of introducing randomness into a finely tuned system?
When one sets up crontab/anacrontab to go off at precisely a certain time, one expects it to run at the time specified, and not at some random time in the next
68 minutes!
What purpose does this serve?kwhiskerz{
