I wonder if it's a quirk of FC2. I tried the same exercise with FC6
(used a 1GB USB flash drive instead of the 100GB drive you used). Both
fdisk and mount agreed that my flash drive was partition type 0e (16 bit
vfat). Any chance you could try the same exercise on a more recent
vintage of FC? It also might be interesting to see what's actually in
/etc/mtab.
Cheers,
Dave

MBR and grub-install
by Bruno Costacurta
Hello,
I'm trying to install MBR and GRUB on another disk by making (from a third
disk boot):
grub-install /dev/sda
grub ---> root(hd0,0)
grub ---> setup(hd0,0)
commands are accepted but doesn't work as PC continues to boot on my third
disk. As far I understand grub-install should install MBR and grub commands
should configured it.
- problem history: I had a two-disk (with LVM & RAID) with Fedora-6. As I
installed distribution CentOS on a new third disk I now boot on CentOS via
MBR on this third disk.
- what I'm looking for : I intend to recover previous MBR+GRUB on /dev/sda (
from previous Fedora install + setup) and then install CentOS entry into this
grub configuration.
Thanks for attention.
Bye,
Bruno

Filesystem problems
by Dan Track
Hi
I've got a server with 59G /opt partiition. Currently df -h reports
that I'm using 59G, however if I run "du -hs" on /opt the size of the
indidivaual dir's sitting in /opt are much smaller and don't sum up to
59G. So my question is what is making the server think that more disk
space is being used?
Any help would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
Dan

RAID 0+1 on Fedora?
by Jack Howarth
Has anyone tried setting up a four drive RAID 0+1
on Fedora Core using the installer tools for setting
up custom drive partitions? After doing some benchmarks
on a new dual quad core Xeon system, it has become
apparent that at 8 processors certain calculations
that thread well can show a disk i/o bottleneck
so it might be worth exploring striping my mirrors
with a RAID 0+1. However, I am unclear on how well
tested the linux software raid support (and installer
setup tools) are for such a configuration.

VLC on Fedora Core 5
by Peter Horst
Has anyone managed to get VLC up and running on FC 5? I am having a
devil of a time. I'm using videolan's own packages, but running 'yum
install vlc' produces:
Error: Missing Dependency: libgnutls.so.11(GNUTLS_REL_1_0_9) is needed
by package vlc
Error: Missing Dependency: libgnutls.so.11 is needed by package vlc
Error: Missing Dependency: libdbus-1.so.1 is needed by package vlc
These are old versions of libraries that are already on my system - is
it wise to install old software? And if it's not a bad thing to do, how
does one do it using yum or rpm? Alternatively, has anyone tried
building this software from source?
Any help greatly appreciated.

3D support
by Vasco Clemente
It is more or less good sense that the success of Microsoft
was mainly driven by hardware (x86).
I have worked on CAD for some time.
In the beginning the application that I used only worked on
Unix workstations (running VMS, HP-UX, Solaris and IRIX).
The first version available for NT did not work natively, it
required an X-server (Exceed from Hummingbird) and it
supported all Open GL extensions.
The performance was amazing when compared with a Unix
workstation that in those days costs at least 3 times more.
The X-server was able to handle very complex parts in
real-time 3D rotations with a very cheap graphic card.
So, why 3D support in Linux is so messy.
SGI and other Unix vendors made extraordinary work in
developing application and 3D support. Is this available for
the community to work with?

vga=792 leads to black screen
by thomas cameron
I have added vga=792 to the kernel line in grub.conf for several years.
I've found that doing this with FC6 leads to a black screen, no little
penguins at the top or anything. I see the drive spin, and the system
boots up fine, but the console is blank.
I've experienced it with 3 different NVidia and 1 ATI cards.
Anyone know why?

Jumping mouse pointer - FC5
by Clodoaldo Neto
In FC5, gnome desktop, the mouse pointer jumps randomly to one of the
screen borders at each minute or two when I'm moving it. Tried with
two PS2 mouses and one USB mouse.
How could I investigate it further?
