Graphics Magick segmentation fault

Hi all, I installed GraphicsMagick to elaborate some images. Every command (like gm identify pict1944.jpg) I launch cause the Segmentation Fault. Someone knows the cause? tnx to all Ambrogio

Slow performance

Hi folks. I'm posting this to both the Fedora as well as the CentOS lists in hopes that somewhere, someone can help me figure out what's going on. I have a dual Xeon 3GHz server that's performing rather slow when it comes to disk activities. The machine is configured with a single 160 GiB OS drive (with CentOS 5.0) and 4x500 GiB drives setup in a RAID-5 configuration. All drives are setup for 3.0 GiB SATA link, and the motherboard also supports that. If I try to delete the folder afterwards (rm -rf FOLDER) it takes a few seconds to do so, however if I delete the CONTENTS of the folder, it does so within a fraction of a second (but then 'sync' takes a few seconds to catch up.) That same folder that I'm copying contains 452 jpeg files in it, ranging from 2.5 to 6.2 MiB. Doing some image processing on them is where it takes a long time. At the moment I'm doing a simple thumbnail creation with the ImageMagick suite (convert FILE -thumbnail "200x200>' `basename FILE .jpg`.th.jpg) and it takes upwards of 8 minutes to complete. The whole time it's running, 'top' reports the server load as follows: load average: 1.06, 1.00, 0.81 And the CPU usage is around 9%. Interestingly, if I run the same command and have it create .png instead, it takes longer, but I won't go there just yet. My question is, is this the expected performance on something like this, or should I be able to get better results? Is there something I should or could do to speed up disk based processes? Or is this something where it's more memory intensive and I need to look at adding more (right now it has 2 GiB of memory.) This problem is causing one of our web sites to time out because it's trying to process hundreds of image files and generate thumbnails, and it's taking forever to do that. So I'm starting at the bottom of the pile here, hardware. If it turns out the hardware is fine, and there's nothing else that can be done to speed it up, then I'll move forward to other possible culprits, such as the routines within the site scripts themselves... -- W | It's not a bug - it's an undocumented feature. +-------------------------------------------------------------------- Ashley M. Temp monitor

I'm looking for a cheap and easy way of monitoring the temp of my systems in case our AC unit fails. The company that makes the Unit was $25K for really little more than a SNMP link to the unit. I was thinking just a simple monitor of the temp in /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM would do it, but on FC5 servers, there's not output there. This left a non runnable yum and a dependency hell to sort out manually. Reduce your package count as much as possible and upgrade all at once. /Mike

High Load problem - Help Required

Hi I've got a server that as a constant load of 5.00. The problem is the server isn't really doing anything. Its purpose is as a backup server so it only does something in the evening. What I'd like is help in developing a strategy, using various tools, to find out whats causing the problem. Many thanks for any help. Dan

Confession of error...

...I think. I feel a bit boobish. When I started using Linux 10 or more years ago so there is little excuse for the situation in which I find myself. I have a (now) small network in my home. It used to be a gateway/firewall system, a mail server and a couple of laptops. The firewall and mail systems were old (AMD K6) systems running Core 3. Don't ask about the laptops. In early April we had a power outage. When the power came back the firewall was dead-dead-dead. By dead I mean both MoBo AND the system disk were dead. I had a Windoze box running on an Athlon and which I was planning to use exclusively to run Photoshop. I got rid of Windoze, did a full install of Core 6, which I found to be an exceedingly difficult evolution. Because I had some difficulty with the full install of Core 6 the question is what is the likelihood of a successful upgrade straight from Core 3 to Core 6. So far it isn't looking that good. I booted up the Core 6 DVD started an upgrade and things stopped at the checking dependencies point. There was no appearance of the progress bar, after 30 minutes, nor did there seem to be any activity on he DVD drive. I am hoping not to have to do a chain of installs starting with the system at Core 3 --> Core 4 --> Core 5 --> Core 6. If it is even possible to get core 4 and core 5 installation media. [Checking on installation media availability is next.] Any practical advice would be more than welcome. AdTHANXvance, dlg David L. How to access locked files on FC6 from FC2 on same machine

I'm usually running FC2, but also have FC5, and FC6 on this machine. I have access to FC6's / directory from FC2, but some files, /boot/grub/grub.conf have a darned big padlock on them, so I can't even read them. I try to answer the odd question from the list, and just being able to post a few lines from a file is usefull. Is there some sort of workaround to get access to these padlocked files? After all I'm not trying to write to them, just copy a few lines to Kmails composer. Nigel.
