Memory Issue
by Jegadeesh
Hi,
I have 4GB memory in my machine . The machine is four Intel(R) Xeon(R)
CPU - 1.60GHz processors box. The bios correctly shows 4GB memory.
Initially the machine had Redhat Enterprise Linux 3 on it and the
machine showed all 4GB memory . Now I have reinstalled the OS to FC6 .
But now machine shows only 3 GB memory.
We have tried recompiling the linux kernel with following options but
still it didnt show all the available memory (4GB)
Method :1
CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G=y
CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y
Method : 2
CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y
CONFIG_HIGHMEM=y
We have also tried passing boot option mem=4096M to the kernel
without any luck.
What it could be the reason? How to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance,

It looks like clamav is mucking around, adding a space after http: and
putting header info after the link and before any other text. Sending a
link from Firefox to a user not running clamav sees the embedded link
correctly. Has anyone else seen this?

udev causing "Cannot Display the Video Mode" on flat panel
by Edward DeMeulle
After fresh installing Fedora 6 just after udev starts the screen goes
blank and displays the above message. Neither setting runlevel 3 in GRUB
nor Ctrl-Alt-F1,F2, etc. restore the screen. I do have ssh access and
can even do Ctrl-Alt-F1 and blindly login. So now what? Apparently udev
is either causing the video card to set itself to an unusual mode or
it's forcing it to use the DVI port (I'm bringing a cable home to test
this, but I want to use VGA for my KVM switch). Video card is an ATI
Rage 128. I've read through the udev literature for a bit and am trying
to understand it's workings. Does anyone have any tips that might speed
up the resolution of this problem?

Dept of Utterly Useless Error Messages
by Timothy Murphy
When I run xpdf I get the message
"Warning: Attempt to remove nonexistent passive grab".
The program seems to run in spite of this.
I googled for the message, with a number of hits,
but none had any suggestion of a solution, or a cause.
Developers who introduce warning messages like this
should be sentenced to read the complete works of Kim Jong Il.

firefox downloads - changing location?
by Dave Stevens
Hi,
I use Firefox to browse journals and regularly click on links to .pdfs (among
others.) If I open with X (some program) the file seems to be transferred
to /tmp rather than to the designated downloads directory. Does anyone know
how I can change this behaviour to have all file transfers go to the
downloads directory?

Oh, come on. I remember a fellow getting the message "Error in source
deck." from a programming class way back when (?? ALGOL on in an IBM
System/370 ??).
Now that's a utterly useless error message.
Cheers,

Spell Checking 'trouble' words??
by Bill Case
Hi;
I would like to add somehow a list of words to my spellcheckers (aspell,
OOo,in particular) such that the spellchecker would pause at or
underline words that may not be misspelled but are nonetheless wrong.
For example, I would like to check every instance of my use of 'were' so
I can change it to 'where' if that is what I meant to write. The same
for words like 'to' for 'too' and 'there' for 'their'.
I am not a good typist and have fallen into bad habits -- so it would be
nice to have a facility that would allow me to add and remove 'trouble'
words to a list as my habits change.
As anyone heard of such a program or fix or hack??

98SE under Xen
by David Fletcher
This may be a silly question, but I can't find an answer from Google
and I've not yet used Xen.
My problem is that I want to make up some home made printed circuits
using a very old pen plotter that I've adapted to do the job.
The CAD software I use, which is called Vutrax, does the job with
Windows 98 but not XP because it needs direct access to the control
registers of the serial port, and I've no longer got a machine running 98.
If I was to build a new machine with one of the new processors that
can do proper virtualisation, would I be able to give a 98SE VM full
access to the serial port control registers to enable me to run the plotter?
