Cannot successfuly boot to install!!!

Hi! I am giving fedora a try. I downloaded F-7-x86_64-DVD.iso and burned a DVD. When booting, I got what I think a normal menu for the installation. Choosing one of the installation options (normal or text) I got the messages of reading vmlinuz and initrd.img and then the system "sits down" with the message "Ready."!!! Nothing to do except CTRL-ALT-DEL. Any help? Any turnround to install by hand from a working linux? Any further info I could provide? Thanks a lot. Other info: - I Checked (sha1sum) the iso file (OK). - I compared the CD I burnt with the iso file mounted as loop. No discrepancies found when comparing file by file. - I have a perfect working both 64 bits and 32 bits gentoo partitions. - I have already tried other distros like kubuntu and knoppix (this a live CD) without this kind of problems. As an example, my laptop has a Broadcom 4306 wireless NIC that currently only works with ndiswrapper when running with a 64-bit kernel. It seems like 64-bit is the poor step-child when it comes to things like wireless support, memory card readers, etc. Anything that doesn't work 64-bit but works under 32-bit tends to get a response of, "Just run 32-bit." HOWTO: Get rid of HSM violation errors with F7 in QEMU

Here's a small hint for those trying to run Fedora 7 in QEMU and get spammed by "HSM violation" warnings/errors. Try running the following as a workaround: killall hald-addon-storage hal-disable-polling --device /dev/scd0 The first command kills the running instance of the HAL storage polling daemon, the second one prevents further instances from getting started. Note that you'll still get a few warnings at boot time (while HAL is being started), but then it keeps quiet. Note that this disables HAL's CD/DVD polling, however you shouldn't need that in QEMU anyway. But please keep this in mind if you're considering using this on a real machine. (Note that such warnings/errors probably mean that your drive has buggy firmware, resp. that QEMU's emulation needs to be fixed.) Kevin Kofler

Yes, those people with newer systems or who have installed a DVD drive and have a boatload of RAM can play with FC^h7 from the live DVD. I like the idea that someone with an aging XP box can throw a live CD in and try Fedora. They are faced with the alternative of buying a new system that will support Vista so the "sales pitch" of trying Fedora from a live CD would probably be really attractive (they can try it, they don't lose any data, they can readily "go back", etc.). The same person is very unlikely to want to invest in a DVD player and more RAM since Vista's intrusive DRM means the upgrades still wouldn't give them a suitable Vista platform (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6407419.stm) Cheers, Dave -- Politics, n. Status of the AMD driver (fglrx) and Fedora 7

Hello, Version 8.36.5 of the AMD driver is incompatible with the Xorg version shipped with Fedora 7, and fortunately 8.37.6 fixed this. However it has other bugs in the closed-source part which AMD does not permit to be modified and so it can't be fixed. AMD has no plans to release an updated driver - The next functional driver will be version 8.38.X, to be released sometime this June. If you are using a ATI/AMD card that isn't supported by the open-source drivers, please consider staying with Fedora Core 6 until the end of the month when 8.38.X is available. Reverting packages to an earlier version

Just before I upgraded my fc 6.93 install to f7 approximately 124 package updates were downloaded and installed by the package manager. It turns out that many of them are marked: *.fc8.i386 Since these packages have been installed many of my applications will not start. Can anyone tell me how to revert these packages to an earlier version? I would greatly appreciate any assistance Regards, Langdon

Multiple Fedoras

I'd like to make room on a new HD for at least two Fedora installs (and perhaps one or two other OS's, though I'd prefer to use them virtualized), so that when F8 appears, I can safely install it without wiping out F7 (and so on, always doing a clean install of F(n+1) on the space used by F(n-1), leaving Fn intact). I'd like to share /home and perhaps /tmp between them, and for the rest, to be able to mount, say Fedora #2's /usr in Fedora #1 as /os2/usr. Is there a sane way of achieving this? Especially wrt grub? Andras

Hi... You need to install openmotif-libs. I used a rpm from rpmfind.net from the opensuse 10.2 distribution. Works perfectly for me. BTW, why are there no openmotif packages for Fedora?
