Frank Cox asked the correct question: What is the issue? If you expect
accurate help you need to provide more nouns and verbs. :-) But do you
have any processes listening on the ports 21 (an ftpd), 22 (an sshd)
and 80, 080 (an httpd)?

No, I did three updates until the upgrade and all worked fine. But trying a
"yum install krb5-workstation" (which is currently missing in group
base) produces
the same error as above.
I've already asked the yum mailinglist. I will keep this list also
updated when I get
something useful there.

Crazy dependancy issues in f7?
by Dan
Is there any quality control in fedora any more?
Trying to set up a server. During install i unselected gnome and X11.
Clearly, some package requiring these was still selected, so anaconda
installed both gnome and X11.
Now I'm trying to remove gnome, x11, and all the useless crap I wont ever
need on a server (synaptics?) when I reached this point: grub required
gtk2.
Why the hell does a boot manager, grub, require a graphical toolkit?
The only way I could remove gtk2 was to remove grub. Example, to now
install grub:
Installing:
grub i386 0.97-13 fedora 489 k
Installing for dependencies:
fedora-logos noarch 6.0.98-3.fc7 fedora 5.0 M
gtk2 i386 2.10.13-1.fc7 updates 6.8 M
gtk2-engines i386 2.10.2-2.fc7 updates 413 k
redhat-artwork i386 7.0.0-9.fc7 fedora 6.1 M
WHY?!? Am I the only person that finds this completely and utterly absurd?
Another issue was between smartmontools and usermode. I dont want or need
usermode installed on a server. Yet, I cannot remove usermode without also
removing smartmontools.
Example: putting smartmontools back on the box:
Installing:
smartmontools i386 1:5.37-3.fc7 updates 301 k
Installing for dependencies:
hal i386 0.5.9-8.fc7 fedora 442 k
hal-info noarch 20070516-2.fc7 fedora 41 k
kbd i386 1.12-21 fedora 1.0 M
pm-utils i686 0.99.3-6.fc7 fedora 26 k
usermode i386 1.92-0.fc7 updates 189 k
Now, I realise people say "fedora isnt for production environments" -
which this isnt. But grub requring gtk2, and smartmontools requiring
usermode? These are just silly dependency issues...
I guess I'll probably have to file some bugs in bugzilla.

F7 and Happy
by Karl Larsen
I wish to make a confession. I had been using Fedora Core 4 for at
least 2 years when it occurred to me I might like to upgrade. I learned
to use yum there and felt ready for other changes. I decided to go
straight to Fedora 7 and did so, Not upgrading FC4 but a fresh load. It
took a day and a half to download.
The kernel was buggy, and lots of things were just strange. And this
list was full of messages about strange things that happened on Fedora
7. Several times it was suggested to just upgrade your FC6 and hang onto
the kernel. This told me that I better load Fedora Core 6 and get used
to the new features. I did that.
On FC6 I discovered that the new Fedora is really Linux with a lot
of new applications. I fooled around and with help, changed my
/etc/fstab so I can mount my older Linux and bring old things to my new
system. This all works great! I use the terminal a lot like it should
be, and it works just as it should. I was told to use the Thunderbird
and Firefox on FC6 or yum from Fedora. Thought about that and did as I
have in the past. I got both from the web page and discovered I was
missing a lib. I yummed the lib and both worked just fine. Fooled around
and made the font larger and easier to read, but thunderbird has trouble
(is slow) to open the mail.
I decided that there was a new kernel in the upgrade to F7 so I
loaded it again and right away got all the updates 50 in and I started
to learn the in and out of F7. It looks and feels like FC6, no big
surprise. Little problems with things like Adobe Acrobat which it looks
like Adobe will start charging for the Acrobat in a few days.
Read with interest the mail on WiFi use with F7 on a lap-top. That
got me interested in the Fedora and Intel software that does the WiFi
for many F7 users. I need today to ask on the NetworkManager list some
questions and will get to it.
In summary I am on Fedora 7 now. Happy with zero problems loading
the software on this old computer and my newer lap-top. I have small
problems that come and go but can be corrected with a simple fix. I
entered a bug report which is still active but there are a lot before
it. I can get along with the Alsa Mixer as it is now.

HP DeskJet 895C/HPIJS
by Mike McCarty
Well, my 870Cse no longer can print a self-test. I'll look into
that later. In the meantime, I've installed an 895C which I have
lying around, and it seems to work. More or less.
I'm trying to understand how the HPIJS driver settings correspond
to the various "modes" this printer supports.
It is supposed to support three print resolutions in various modes.
Econofast
Normal
Best
The driver has various settings, but I don't see exactly how these
correspond. Is there someone here who has experience with a printer
similar to the 895Cxi using it with the HPIJS driver? I'd appreciate
help setting up the queues.
If not, then I guess I can try all the various combinations and
see what I get. I've got a sort of draft greyscale working, and
a sort of color draft working. I'm not sure at all that I've got
a 600dpi text working, and definitely the higher res color is iffy.
Thanks
Mike

Resume on a Suspended Lap-top
by Karl Larsen
I hit suspend on my F7 laptop and it did go to sleep. Alas I have no
idea how to wake it up. I found no docs yet but need to look at
/usr/share/doc/ perhaps.

Soundcard problem after powerdown
by Przemyslaw Gawronski
Hi
I experienced a power down on my FC7 box. After booting I found the
soundcard not working. System-config-soundcard found the card but when
trying to play the test sound it quickly pops up the dialog asking if I
heard the, but after a 1-2seconds so it's way to short. I'm also unable
to set anything there.
So I ran FC7-Live cd (gnome) and there the card was found and worked as
expected so it isn't burned or something.
I compared kernel modules in both cases, so for FC7-Live its:
snd_hda_intel 24409 0
snd_hda_codec 202689 1 snd_hda_intel
snd_seq_dummy 7877 0
snd_seq_oss 33345 0
snd_seq_midi_event 11073 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 50353 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_usb_audio 79425 0
snd_pcm_oss 43489 0
snd_mixer_oss 19393 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_usb_lib 19393 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi 26561 1 snd_usb_lib
snd_pcm 74565 4 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_device 11853 4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd_hwdep 12869 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_timer 24773 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 53189 12 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_rawmidi,snd_pcm,snd_seq_device,snd_hwdep,snd_timer
soundcore 11553 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 13769 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
and for FC7 on my HDD its:
snd_hda_intel 24281 0
snd_hda_codec 202689 1 snd_hda_intel
snd_seq_dummy 7877 0
snd_seq_oss 33345 0
snd_seq_midi_event 11073 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 50353 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_usb_audio 79297 2
snd_pcm_oss 43489 0
snd_mixer_oss 19393 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_usb_lib 19393 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_pcm 74565 4 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss
snd_rawmidi 26561 1 snd_usb_lib
snd_seq_device 11852 4 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi
snd_timer 24773 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_hwdep 12869 1 snd_usb_audio
snd 53189 16 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device,snd_timer,snd_hwdep
snd_page_alloc 13769 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
soundcore 11553 1 snd
So I don't see to much difference here :( not missing modules at least.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: How to generate č (c-hachek) in KDE
by kwhiskerz
Perhaps you can use compose, but us-acentos is easier.
To type an apostrophe, type AltGr-'
For an accent aigu, type apostrophe twice
For a quotation mark, type AltGr-" (that's AltGr-Shift-', or AltGr-",
depending on how you look at it)
For a diaresis, or umlaut, without a letter underneath, just type " twice
(shift apostrophe twice)
For a tilde, type AltGr-~ or tilde twice
For an accent grave, type AltGr-` or ` twice
All of the diacritical marks work like this, once plus the letter to use it,
twice to type it without a letter. In the case of diaresis (umlaut),
apostrophe and quotation mark, however, the diacritical mark is different
than the key, so it is necessary to use AltGr plus the key, shifted if
required.
Although I detest the need to make this comparison, as it forever suggests
that Linux is lesser or an imitation trying to become as good, Windows US
International layout works exactly like this. When at a job, I have the US
International layout set and use it exclusively with no disadvantage and only
advantage, as I can type whatever I want without the need for entering
curious ASCII numbers to reference keys. Others, when using my computer,
however, have difficulties, as they refuse to learn this and are set in their
ways.
What could be simpler than: diacritical mark plus letter or diacritical mark
twice?
