f7 dead and recovery disk hangs.
by Robert Cahn
I have a F7 system. It uses the x86_64 distribution. We had a lightning
storm and I was away. When I got back the system had hung and wouldn't
reboot. When I tried to put in the recovery CD and restore the system it
loads in a number of SCSI drivers. When it gets to, "Loading sata_sis
driver" progress halts. After a while garbage fills the middle third of the
screen and the disk spins on and on. I've tried to reinstall F7 but the
same thing happens. It appears the sata_sis driver is corrupted and the
system cannot update without it. Does anyone know a word around?

I can't. The EXT2 filesystem resides actually on a NAS that uses internally ISO-8859-1 for filenames enconding, not UTF-8. Changing to UTF-8 would mess things up.
Thanks,
Loic.

why don't addresses in System.map and /proc/kallsyms match?
by Robert P. J. Day
i'm a bit curious about something i noticed on my fully-updated F7
system. i was playing with some kernel debugging and noticed that the
kernel-space address for "jiffies" was different between the above two
sources:
$ uname -r
2.6.21-1.3228.fc7
$ grep "D jiffies" /boot/System.map-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7
c130bc00 D jiffies
c130bc00 D jiffies_64
$ grep "D jiffies" /proc/kallsyms
c070bc00 D jiffies
c070bc00 D jiffies_64
shouldn't the addresses be the same? or am i just clueless about
something here?

a question about perl scripts
by Scott Berry
Hello there,
I have a perl script which I made a directory for in my home directory and I am currently unable to get the file to run. What permissions should be put on a pl file? I am assuming read and execute. All this script does is go up to everydns.net and make sure that my web server address always refers to my ip through A records. Thanks for the help.
