blank DVDs are not mounted on FC6
by Globe Trotter
Hi,
How do I get to write to a DVD. I put in a blank DVD and I don't get anything.
Mount volume says no media, and I cant figure out how to proceed since nothing
works.
is this a feature or a bug?
Best,
trotter

how do I get pine?
by Michael Hennebry
How do I get pine?
I tried "yum provides pine" and got lots of output,
but none of it seemed to point to pine.
I got the same amount of joy looking for elm.
Any ideas?

New Kernel still bad
by Karl Larsen
Yesterday I yummed the updates and they included removing the last
updated kernel and installed a new one called 2.6.22.1-33.fc7
which I hoped is better than the one it replaced.
So I stuck my trusty 2 GB USB storage device into a USB port and the
Hard Drive moved but the firewire things just didn't do the normal
things. I got no listing of the files on it and no symbol on my desktop
that shows it is mounted. I will stay with the new kernel today and see
if I can find other things that stopped working.

F7- Dictionaries of Thunderbird
by Antonio M
When you have additional directories (other than English-USA) and a
new Thunderbird is installed, only the English-USA dictionary is moved
to /usr/lib/Thunderbird-new, while other dictionaries are left in
/usr/lib/Thunderbird-previous and you have to move by hand.
Similar behavior in FC6 and oldest releases.

NM use for the advanced user.
by Aaron Konstam
I sent this this morning but I did not see it arrive so I am sending it
again since I feel it might be useful to someone.
Let me share something that most people miss. If you are using NM just
left click on the nm-applet and choose an option :
Connect to Other Wireless Network
You will be given a GUI window which allow you to choose a series of
Security methods that most people never see.

Re: Setting up KVM?

How did you ever get Windows XP Pro loaded?
I have an upgrade version or Windows XP Home, an upgrade version of Windows
98se, and a full version of Windows 95.
Windows XP boots fine in qemu-kvm, ut it asks that I insert a previous version
as proof. I do so, using 'eject (-f) cdrom' to change the CD. Windows XP
tells me this is not a valid version. I have tried it with both Win98se and
Win95.
I have also tried installing Win98se and Win95, but qemu-kvm and
libvirtmanager both run briefly, just a flash and crash. So fast that I can
just barely see some output. The valid Windows disks, 98se and 95, do not
seem to be recognized. I have tried to make images of them, but the result is
the same. Windows XP boots fine, but I am not able to validate it with my
valid previous versions.
I have been working on this problem for weeks, have searched myriad different
sites, but there is no information available. So how did you get Windows
installed in the first place?

Using ntfs-3g
by Karl Larsen
I got this yummed and then tried it. In a root terminal I wrote:
# mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /fc4
and it worked. I went to /fc4 and there was my windows file system.
This would sure make getting things off that Windows file system easy :-)

unload fglrx.ko before suspend
by Christian Menzel
Hi,
on my ThinkPad T60 running F7 with all updates suspend only works when
the fglrx.ko kernel module is not loaded.
I'm using the fglrx driver and the text output is quite slow without
the module, so I'm looking for a way to use suspend and the module.
Is it possible to unload the module before suspend and load it during wakeup?

Video players, plugins, Firefox and 64 bit
by John Lagrue
I am slowly going nuts here!
Is ther anywhere a clear explanation of how to get the BBC News player
working on a 64bit Fedora system with Firefox?
I have installed all the gxine stuff from livna which (according to
the blogs I've read) should handle any windows media stream.. I've
also got RealPlayer 10 installed. But neither of them does anything
when embedded in Firefox!
I never had this problem with Ubuntu; but I am *this* close to
slinging Fedora away; since installing F7 I've had more problems than
in years of any other Linux - including Fedora 1 to 6.
I've even resorted to installing firefox-32. And it made sod-all difference.
At my wits' end.......

Debugging kernel panic on boot.
by Simon Andrews
Since the release of the 2.6.22-x kernels one of our servers has failed
to boot. Something seems to be going wrong in the loading of the
modules which allow it to mount the root partition and it dies very
early on in the boot. Going back to a 2.6.21 kernel makes everything
work OK again.
I've reported this on bugzilla at:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=249853
..but would like to try to track down where it's going wrong.
The machine itself is slightly odd in that it has a SCSCI controller on
it with no devices attached, and the system disk is IDE and is the only
one connected.
There are a few odd messages during boot, but these appear both in the
kernels which work and those which don't:
SCSI subsystem initialized
libata version 2.20 loaded.
ata_piix 0000:00:12.1: version 2.10ac1
ata1: PATA max UDMA/33 cmd 0x000101f0 ctl 0x000103f6 bmdma 0x00011050 irq 14
ata2: PATA max UDMA/33 cmd 0x00010170 ctl 0x00010376 bmdma 0x00011058 irq 15
scsi0 : ata_piix
ata1: port is slow to respond, please be patient (Status 0x80)
ATA: abnormal status 0x3F on port 0x000101f7
ata1.00: ata_hpa_resize 1: sectors = 488397168, hpa_sectors = 488397168
ata1.00: ATA-6: WDC WD2500BB-00KEA0, 08.05J08, max UDMA/100
ata1.00: 488397168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48
ata1.00: ata_hpa_resize 1: sectors = 488397168, hpa_sectors = 488397168
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33
scsi1 : ata_piix
The failed boots finish with:
Trying to resume from /dev/sda3
Unable to access resume device (/dev/sda3)
Creating root device
Mounting root filesystem
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
Setting up other filesystems
Setting up new root fs
setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory
no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults
setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
unmounting old /dev
unmounting old /proc
unmounting old /sys
switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory
Booting has failed
Kernel panic not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
..but these messages are apparently common to any failure to find the
root partition.
Any suggestions as to what I can do to try to figure out exactly what is
causing this failure?
Cheers
Simon.
