how to read ntfs files?
by Bob Goodwin
I have a hard drive installed in an F7 computer and would like to list
the directories before I reformat it. It should have Windows XP on it
but there is some uncertainty about which drive was sent to me. Fdisk
tells me it is formatted hpfs/ntfs. I believe I need another
application to deal with ntfs files?
Can someone tell me what to do next?
Tnx.

Ah, thanks. I've checked the scripts again. There is only a alsa
reference in the "halt" script, it calls "/sbin/salsa" (?). In FC6 it
called alsactl.

OK, I will add this to my rc.local as a workaround. Really odd that not
more people have this bug, maybe it is related to the type of soundcard
in use.

Gmfsk now works!
by Karl Larsen
I used Nigles idea and I read the man pages for the wrapper aoss which
takes care of the strange problem I had with /dev/dsp being busy. I had
to yum the software in and then I start the thing like this:
$ aoss gmfsk
and that brings up gmfsk much faster than without the wrapper. I got it
all set up and wrote messages between Texas and here in New Mexico over
the 20 meter Ham Radio band. So it is working well again on F7.
I need to figure out why oass is making it work. Here is part of man aoss:
aoss is a simple wrapper script which facilitates the use of the ALSA
OSS compatibility library. It just sets the appropriate
LD_PRELOAD path
and then runs the command.
This is useful in cases where routing settings (which can be
made in
your .asoundrc file) need to be applied to commands that use
the OSS
API.

Setting up KVM?
by Stanczak Group
What's the best setup to run KVM under F7? I setup virt-manager, but I
can't seem to get any VM's setup. I'm using this as a desktop system. Or
is KVM the right thing to use?

How to mount USB drive at boot time
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have a USB drive that is usually, though not always, connected to my
desktop system.
If it is connected to the system at boot time, the device path should be
created and the drive should be mounted immediately, i.e. BEFORE any
user logs in.
If it is not connected at boot time, there should be no serious problem.
If the drive is connected to a running system (on which it had not been
previously connected), the device path should be created, and it should
be mounted by root.
Root should be able to unmount the drive, when it is mounted.
I assume this should be done by either udev or hal -- HOW?
Thanks - jon

setting up public share without a password... does not work in FC7???
by Phil
Hello,
here is my smb.conf:
[global]
workgroup = MYGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v
security = share
passdb backend = tdbsam
[public]
comment = Public Stuff
path = /home/plabonte/public
read only = no
public = yes
writable = yes
printable = no
guest only = yes
I have tried a number of configuration changes and no luck
I want to create a share that is accessible from Windows without the need of
a username and password. And I want the share writtable by everyone. The
actual shared directory has been chmod'ed to 777 to illiminate it from the
cause of the problem
When I try to access the share I get the error: "the network name cannot be
found"
Thank you in advance!

evolution paper size
by Craig White
Have an issue with newly installed F7 and evolution with a cups print
server for the network.
Nowhere in evolution can you choose page size when you print - as far as
I can tell.
It appears the default page size is A4 and that setting is somewhere in
the bowels of GNOME and I cannot figure out how to switch it to US
Letter.
Anyone want to toss me a bone...it would seem to be a simple thing but I
have 30 minutes chasing my tail around and I can't figure out how to get
at something like this - even with the most crude gconftool-2
TIA

how to run WindowMaker "dockapps" in KDE?
by Paul Johnson
Recently, I've been exploring KDE and have found its window manager,
kwin, to be quite excellent. Combined with kdesktop, I can get just
about all of the customizations I want.
I have been a long time WindowMaker user, and have grown accustomed to
some of the dockapps. I can't find any way to dock them in a KDE
system. Program writers seem to think "dock" means an application
launcher, but in WindowMaker a dock is more than that. It is a place
where programs can run in "miniwindows". Yes, a dock can be a
launcher, but we don't need that function. What we need is some place
for a small program to run.
In particular, since I cannot find a small CPU monitor applet for the
kde panel, I want to run dockapps like "wmload" or "wmmon". When I
run them now, they just go to the top of the screen and the desktop
background shows through the clear parts (alpha channel, I suppose).
I guess that is adequate, but not so good looking as plopping the app
down on top of the pleasant colored square. It looks like this now:
http://pj.freefaculty.org/WindowManagers/wmmon_on_kde.png
Whereas it should be mounted on a standard background pixmap, as shown here
http://pj.freefaculty.org/WindowManagers/wmmon_should_be.png
Got any help on how to run things in miniwindows and have them restart
every time you log in?

yum update
by Karl Larsen
The yum update is a problem now. I let it go to the point where it does
what it says it will and I said no! Most of what it wants to do is fine.
But it wants to erase my current kernel and install 41 again. I have
been through this already today!
How can I get the other updates but not the kernel?
