daily system log stopped in F7?
by Mike C
Yesterday I stopped getting F7 system log email - I presume that one
of the updates has caused this but does anyone know what happened and
how to fix?

Why only works with Xen Kernel ?
by Newton
Dear Friends :
I have an ASUS M2N-MX (sound and ethernet onboard), 4200 Athlon 64 X2, 2
Gb (DDR2), 250Gb SATA-II, 7300LE XFX (videocard) and, I'm trying many
Linux distributions, including Fedora, since 6 version (with this
machine - I knew Fedora, since first one) ! I'm very disappointed, cause
it only works with Xen Kernel (2.6.20-2925.13.fc7xen)and, I can't use
my videocard acceleration, no desktop effects and so on ! Also
sometimes, I have sound at one speaker and, eventually, at both ! When I
try to boot with " normal " kernel (2.6.22.1-41.fc7) , hangs at starting
firewall or, when looking for hardware ! Is there a way to solve this
situation ? When I tried another distributions, I had another errors,
including frequency monitor (???), no sound, and so on... Debian Etch
(4.0), was the easiest install (almost all recognized) but extremely
unstable ! I lost how many times, I had to reset this machine !
Sincerely,
Newton - Brazil

Re: SELinux survey (was RE: Stupid F7 boot loop)
by Tom Horsley
> I personally have immediately disabled SELinux on any and every box I've
> ever installed for myself, and grind my teeth any time I even see the
> word.
I didn't disable it on the first fedora release it showed up on, and
spent hours after that just trying to gain enough access to my own system
to disable it when I found that basically nothing worked. Ever
since then I not only disable it when installing, but also add
selinux=0 to the kernel options just to be sure :-).
> Would any of you out there care to share with me any of your personal
> experiences with SELinux being useful to you (in any way whatsoever), on
> a single-user workstation?
I can't imagine ever having an experience where any form of security
software turned out to be useful, but I do have a theory that explains
selinux in fedora and apparmor in opensuse:
Large numbers of government contracts need you to check a box for
"enhanced security" in order to bid on them, therefore selinux was
born.
If redhat had shipped selinux in enterprise when it was in the condition
it first showed up in fedora, they would have lost every paying
enterprise customer, therefore they needed a large group of suckers
to find all the obvious problems.
That's us :-).
Cross out redhat and selinux and write in suse and apparmor with a
crayon, and the same explanation applies :-).

Routing / Iptables issues
by Roger Grosswiler
Does it seem, that i am the only one with that issue?
Yesterday, i fiddled on my firewall. Since then, i have a funny effect while surfing:
- Surfing the internet: works without problem
- Surfing the intranet: doesn't work (2 Subnets, also including routing)
When i surf, all traffic to port 80 gets redirected to port 3128 - which is squid and
correct.
Please Help!
Thanks in advance,
Roger

twinview with nvidia FX 5200
by James Pifer
I'm hoping someone here can help me. I'm trying to get twinview or clone
working on my nvidia FX 5200 card on FC7. I have these nvidia packages
installed:
nvidia-graphics-devices-1.0-5.fc7
nvidia-graphics9755-libs-1.0_9755-87.fc7
nvidia-graphics-helpers-0.0.21-22.fc7
nvidia-graphics9755-1.0_9755-87.fc7
nvidia-graphics9755-kmdl-2.6.22.4-65.fc7-1.0_9755-87.fc7
Right now I have the display working on the SVideo port, but not on the
DVI. I would like to see the same display on both.
A couple people on the mythtv list tried to help but they had
conflicting information. For example, I used one of their xorg.conf as a
template, which gave me two device and two screen sections. Then the
other guy said you should only have one of each. He made a couple
suggestions, but not specific so I had to trial and error. I asked if he
would share his xorg.conf and I never heard back. Maybe I still will
since it was only yesterday.
Anyway, below is my current xorg.conf. Can anyone suggest any *specific*
changes to my xorg.conf that might get the display working on BOTH the
SVideo and DVI ports? I'm tried of trying million changes, reboot, try
again, etc...
Thanks,
James

I'm trying to remove xdg-user-dirs as mentioned in Section 10.1 of the

as well. Is there a way around it as I want KDE but not the
xdg-user-dirs folders in my $HOME

Upgrading fc6 -> f7 with problems
by Mogens Kjaer
I just did an upgrade fc6 to f7 using an f7 i386 DVD.
No warnings or errors.
Reboot,
yum update
Then I get a message: "No module named rpm" and
no update.
It turned out that several of the packages needed
for yum (e.g. python-rpm) were newer in the updated
fc6 than on the f7 DVD I used for the installation,
so after the upgrade the machine still had the fc6
packages.
I had to manually "rpm --force -Uvh rpm-python.." for
a couple of packages to get yum to run at all.
Shouldn't the upgrade process upgrade package-x-fc6 to
package-y-f7 even though x>y?

Re: ftpd on xinetd

Rick:
> Are you sure the user's shell is listed in /etc/shells?
It isn't (I didn't know about this - just found it in the readme).
I use the shell supplied - gnome terminal (no reason to change). The
readme states that I could use 'ftp' as a shell.
So, this affects login? (Considering that it works as a standalone.)
> Also, verify the user is NOT listed in /etc/ftpusers.
That file doesn't exist.

dd problems.
by Karl Larsen
The last boot I had the COPY! of this F7 running it appears. All the
new mail went to that Hard Drive and all the odd things that happened
have stopped when I removed the New Hard Drive. I checked grub.conf and
fstab and they are normal now. I noticed that google came up funny so
that adds credence to the fact although I planned to boot up the old F7
it didn't work.
So now it will be a flurry of reboot to see if I can figure out what
happened. I wonder if the file system is ok on the New Hard Drive?
