Artsd seems to hang

Recently I have installed (not an upgrade) Fedora Core 7. everything works out the box except the soundsystem. During the login phase I hear the sound from the kde login event. But at some time the arts sound systems seems to halt. I cannot even stop artsd with a normal (TERM) kill. I have to use kill -9 (SIGKILL) to terminate artsd. After termination KDE will start an other artd and now everything seems to work. Any idee's how I can find the source of this problem? Andy Esten

I am a new user of Linux, I am planning to install Fedora to my computer and I did downloaded Fedora 6.0 but I am planning to upgrade my computer to Intel Core II with E6750 CPU and somebody told me Fedora 6.0 didn't support E6750 CPU and need to download 7.0 version; so I just want to confirm about this before I am upgrade my computer, please somebody can able to help me! Settings in /etc/sysctl.conf not sticking at boot

Hi, On a fully updated F7 box I have added this line to /etc/sysctl.conf: net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_tcp_be_liberal = 1 However, on reboot, this seems to have no effect. Eg. On a freshly rebooted system: # cat /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_tcp_be_liberal 0 And so that setting doesn't seem to have been applied. Without editing that file, if I do: # /sbin/sysctl -p net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0 net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1 net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0 kernel.sysrq = 0 kernel.core_uses_pid = 1 net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1 net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_tcp_be_liberal = 1 then, the setting sticks: # cat /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_tcp_be_liberal 1 Anyone able to shed some light on why this is so? Trying to follow the update announcement in Fedora c6 for 4 packages (xml-commons, jdom, velocity and xerces-j2) updates the update fails. Dependencies state xml-commons= 0:1.3.02-0.b2.7jpp.10 to be missing. It is not missing but the name is slightly different. I removed the package and re-installed. The problem is that on resolving dependencies it gives an error, and in "details" it says: missing dependency: xml-commons = 0:1.3.02-0.b2.7jpp.10 is needed by package xml-commons-apis. The file actually installed by package xml-commons-apis is xml-commons-1.3.02-0.b2.7pp.10.i386.rpm. This file came with Eudora c6 install CD's. You see the slight difference at the beginning of the file, ie = 0: instead of - I guess this is the cause of the failed dependency. I sought for the file ml-commons = 0:1.3.02-0.b2.7jpp.10 in the repositories but could not find it. The problem is that these failing updates remain appearing between the other updates and have to be skipped each time. How to solve? Should the update be debugged? KS

Hello, From the introduction of kernel 2.6 on, the kernel can be configured to be preemtible. This promises better latency. Many did not use this feature in the past: Why? When I look at Fedora's 7 kernel source configuration (with 'make menuconfig'), the kernel is also not preemtible, but "voluntarily preemtible": What does that mean? thanks and greets Boris

unable to copy dot prefixed files to Apache powered WebDAV shares

Hello All, I am running Apache/2.0.52. I have WebDAV enabled on certain directories and I am able to read/write regular files in the WebDAV shares. However if I try to upload a file that has a filename prefixed with a dot (e.g: .temp .pine etc) the upload fails. And I just get a 500 error in the access logs and no info in the error logs. SATA and IDE Hard Drives

Well today with hdparm I learned what I should have guessed. The difference in data flow is not enough to even think about. I paid $70.00 for my SATA and it is just not what I had hoped for. It is just a newer design of the old IDE and not much faster. I will use it but not for anything but another kind of thing. Maybe F9. -- Karl F.
