Canon Elura 100 Camcorder and FC5

I gave my wife a Canon Elura 100 camcorder for Christmas. I just watched her download her very first movie to Windows XP. Can I do the same in Fedora Core 5? If I just plugged in the camcorder to my onboard 1394 port, will an application come up recognizing the camcorder and offering to download the movie from the DV tape? Thanks Bob

CentOS PPP

Hello I set up PPP earlier (dial in) to a Red Hat system. I did this: In /etc/inittab: S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/mgetty ttyS0 -x7 -D /dev/ttyS0 kill -1 1 In /etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config: /AutoPPP/ - * /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login debug modem crtscts In /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: fred * sanford * dick * vandyke * in options.ttyS0: 10.0.0.141:10.0.0.149 in /etc/sysctl.conf : net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 in /etc/sysconfig/network: NETWORKING=YES and in /etc/ppp/options:lock debug dump logfile /tmp/pppd_debug.log noccp nodeflate proxyarp silent This worked. I believe I recorded everything I did. Then I tried this on a CentOS 4.5. It gets to "verifying user name and password" but then never responds. Oh and yes I did try logging in with a regular hyperterm (non PPP) to be sure the login/pwd combinations work, so that is not the problem. (Yes, they are something other then fred/sanford and dick/vandyke actually. I just used those as an example). Anyway I can't get in and I don't see anything in /var/log/messages (nor /tmp/pppd_debug.log). Is there something I am missing? This is actually a disk replacement, so everything on the client side of my dialup remains the same (number, login, password, etc). Thanks

curious about fedora-shipped "initramfs" image?

(i'll use the initramfs from my f8-t1 system here, but i'm fairly sure all the issues still apply to f7.) from where comes the initramfs that's part of the fedora-supplied kernel package? i'm curious about the first part of its init script: mount -t proc /proc /proc setquiet echo Mounting proc filesystem echo Mounting sysfs filesystem mount -t sysfs /sys /sys ... first and pedantically, one would think that you should print that you're mounting the proc filesystem *before* you actually try it. :-) and where does one find utilities like "setquiet"? since the contents of the initramfs are being run in userspace, where does one find init-referenced utilities like setquiet, hotplug and mkblkdevs, among others? they're not part of the initramfs image, so where do they come from? (and, yes, i'm prepared for that to be a stupid question. :-) rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. J. Problem setting up IMAPS

IMAPS is sort of working on my server/laptop; but I only get new mail on my laptop after I run kmail on the server. On my laptop, I have an IMAPS account pointing to my server. On the server I am running dovecot; the relevant lines of /etc/dovecot.conf are: -------------------------------- protocols = imap imaps ssl_listen = *:993 ssl_disable = no mail_location = maildir:~/Mail/inbox protocol imap { listen = *:143 ssl_listen = *:993 } -------------------------------- On the server kmail has 2 Accounts; A Local account, which collects mail from /var/spool/mail/tim , and an IMAPS account, which points to itself, as www.<server>.com . New mail goes into IMAPS/inbox (I'm not sure why). On the server, .procmailrc contains the lines MAILDIR=$HOME/Mail DEFAULT=/var/spool/mail/tim DROPPRIVS=yes Any advice or suggestions gratefully received, particularly from anyone running IMAPS + kmail. There are many references to manual page X(7), for example from manual page Xserver, but I can't find it (on Fedora Core 5). Where has it gone? -- Erik.

No text in MythTV menus

With the newest version of MythTV, there is no text displayed on the menus and I get loads of the error message below: Mesa 6.5.2 implementation error: User called no-op dispatch function (an unsupported extension function?) mythtv-0.20.2-165.fc7 mesa-libGLw-6.5.1-2.fc7 mesa-libGL-6.5.2-10.fc7 mesa-libGLw-devel-6.5.1-2.fc7 mesa-libGLU-6.5.2-10.fc7 mesa-libGL-devel-6.5.2-10.fc7 mesa-libGLU-devel-6.5.2-10.fc7 It used to work fine, but something must be broken now. Following advice in the MythTV forums (I think), I installed msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch.rpm, but to no avail. Any help much appreciated, Jesper

Adding own mirror to yum

Hi How would i alter the fedora-updates-repo file below to add my own mirror and only use my own local mirror. I have played around with various options without success. I read the description of this package and it sounds interesting. I installed the rpm from the fedora repo. The package opens properly, and subscribing to channels works, videos get downloaded, but when I click the play button, the screen flashes for a second as if its trying to play but then reverts the selections page. If I go to the download folders and click on the files, I can get them to play with VLC. So, I'm getting playable files. Going through the options doesn't yield much. I've read through the faq and I'm looking through the forum - Has anyone gotten this package to work? -- Claude Jones Brunswick, MD, USA
